I am always grateful to be a sober warrior in the summer months as navigating muggy heat and a hangover is no longer something that is my problem! For those ladies asking how to join Hola Sober CLOSED meetings - well that's easy ladies - SIGN UP to Pledge 100 (Tara) starting in September and you will find yourself in a closed group of women making life changes one pledge at a time . If you feel you need a refresher or a kick in the ass, PLEDGE 100 may be the program for you and your alcohol- free lifestyle. The waiting list is always available for those wishing to join a safe closed space! This week Hola Sober Sunday looks at beauty products that caught our eye, and Lynn in Perth shares the work of Donna Ashworth in her weekly column and Colette guides us through the King of Wands. We lean on the words of the women of Pledge 100, James Clear, Donna Ashworth, and my inbox for inspiration. I would like to wish you a fabulous week ahead as I look skyward joining a global dawn chorus to say not today lady, not today.

JANE The Glee alum recalled her struggles with alcohol addiction during an interview with The Guardian in February 2022, revealing she got sober for a second time after relapsing years ago. Lynch explained that after going to AA for years, having a successful career and doing therapy, she began drinking again — and quickly learned she couldn’t just have one drink. "I became a connoisseur of wine in a way that only an alcoholic can," she shared of her relapse, noting she drank while starring on Paramount+’s The Good Fight, which she appeared on from 2017 to 2021. "I went back into denial, after all those years of sobriety and self-knowledge. I fooled myself — I woke up one day and went: ‘I'm back.'" Lynch recalled being able to fool her close friends during that time, saying, "I remember a friend said: ‘I told you you're not an alcoholic anymore.' I'd go: ‘I know!'" The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actress is now sober, adding that she stopped drinking again just six months after her relapse. "[It was] like the sober fairy said, ‘OK, I'm giving you one more chance,'" she said. "And it was over. Five o'clock would come and I didn't notice it." Read in full here

THERE IS NO SUCH THING as one...... "She was a functioning alcoholic, working steadily in theatre, even if some nights she would still be in the bar at 7 a.m. the next morning, or would find vomit in her bathroom and have no idea how it got there. One day, she just decided to stop, “a kind of magical lifting of my compulsion to drink”, poured her glass of wine down the sink, and joined Alcoholics Anonymous, which she loved. “I felt sorry for people who weren’t alcoholics: I just loved AA,” she says, smiling. “It was very much a gift; it was almost like I was struck sober.” It stuck, until about five years ago when Lynch thought she’d had enough therapy and was grownup enough to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner. “And I loved it,” she says, deadpan. “I became a connoisseur of wine in a way that only an alcoholic can. I went back into denial, after all those years of sobriety and self-knowledge. I fooled myself – I woke up one day and went: ‘I’m back.’ It took about three years. I’m telling people I’m drinking one glass of wine a night, and I’m drinking five.” She wouldn’t allow herself to drink until 5 p.m.. “I was tied to this thing again, to some hope of what it was going to do for me, and the rest of the day didn’t matter. The only part of the day that really mattered was five o’clock." It took three years of her life until she decided to stop and it still took Lynch another six months to stop after deciding to. Again, she says she was struck sober, “like the sober fairy said: ‘OK, I’m giving you one more chance.’ And it was over. Five o’clock would come and I didn’t notice it.” -Jane Lynch-

Dearest Sober Queens "How different our lives are when we really know what is deeply important to us, and keeping that picture in mind, we manage ourselves each day to be and to do what really matters most. IF the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place faster. We may be very busy, we may be very efficient, but we will also be truly effective only when we begin with the end in mind.." What type of wall is your life ladder laying against this morning? Is it one of joy and celebration at sobriety? Or is it the walls of anger and resentment of one who is fighting her truth? Is it one who is clinging onto some bullshit world of romance and wine-filled sunsets where you manage the hell out of your drinking? Is your life ladder against the shiny, glossy wall funded by the billion-dollar drinks industry? Is your life ladder against the walls of false friends or sober warriors who can lead the way? Is your life ladder against marriage or a relationship that is draining you dry? Is your life ladder leaning against toxic people or those who lift you up? This quote appeared in a thread this week and was sent to me as a morning reflection and as we say at home, it got me between the eyeballs. Bloody hell, how many years did I spend with my life ladder leaning against the wrong wall trying to get to the top? A decade, possibly more, possibly ALL MY LIFE, I'm not sure? My ladder used to lean against walls that were paper thin and never going to serve my soul and mind in the way that it needed, which is to be nourished. I spend time leaning into the wall of external validation as a wife, mother, and professional believing if it looked good and was validated by that outside of myself - it was enough. I spent time leaning into false friends, or career paths that were so NOT ME and felt empty inside but again it was all wrapped up in the wall of external validation. The wall of Wine addiction o'clock led to grey from seagull to charcoal - fifty shades of grey which is not a sexual position or nod to the book, it is the colour of my life that addiction led me. A ladder leaning against the darkest of grey perspectives permeating every facet of my life and in sobriety, the direct opposite is the case.

Clarity gifts daily and purpose leads the way with such a spark of sunshine that it is impossible to lose my way - do the next right thing, which is taking the next step up the ladder because I am leaning against the PERFECT wall.It is a wall of sober promise, of meaningful friendships,0f a growing love of self, 0f a deepening spiritual awakening, a rallying cry from deep within to begin to trust, a neon sign heralding the magic of having a sober pledge, a wall so solidly built that it is of the finest granite block, built by generations of the enlightened who found the sober promise long before I did, led the way and foraged a pathway for me in the darkness, it is in the books I read, the songs I sing, the prayers I say, it is a wall so very grounded in truth and in the tragedy that it can never be UNDONE. It is a wall of knowing and sadness, a wall of soul searching and acceptance, a wall of love and laughter, of spirits loved and lost, a wall filled with hope and laughter, a wall that is becoming increasingly crowded as thousands of other woman throw their ladder against the one sure thing in life which is - life without alcohol results in freedom of self and soul liberating you to be all you can be.

To some, it's just a wall. To me, it is life itself. Wherever you are today, in whatever state of mind you are in please be aware that the wall you throw your life ladder against has a HUGE SIGNIFICANCE to the outcomes so for the love of all that is good in the world look skyward and join me… Please join me in the sober dawn chorus as we say not today lady, not today.

Alcohol is normalised in society, despite being an addictive harmful drug. It's the only drug we have to justify NOT taking! There is a movement toward mindful drinking and choosing sobriety and it's incredibly liberating to be free of the 'wine o clock' culture. Many of us are 'grey area drinkers' who would benefit from taking a break from the booze to access a whole array of positive benefits. Let's change the conversation around alcohol!

SUNDAY THOUGHT

not today lady, not today.

“We weren’t born distrusting and fearing ourselves. That was part of our taming. We were taught to believe that who we are in our natural state is bad and dangerous. They convinced us to be afraid of ourselves. So we do not honor our own bodies, curiosity, hunger, judgment, experience, or ambition. Instead, we lock away our true selves. Women who are best at this disappearing act earn the highest praise: She is so selfless. Can you imagine? The epitome of womanhood is to lose one’s self completely. That is the end goal of every patriarchal culture. Because a very effective way to control women is to convince women to control themselves.” ― Glennon Doyle,

SUNDAY THOUGHT not today lady, not today.

“Meanwhile, improving by 1 percent isn’t particularly notable —sometimes it isn’t even noticeable—but it can be far more meaningful, especially in the long run. The difference a tiny improvement can make over time is astounding. Here’s how the math works out: if you can get 1 percent better each day for one year, you’ll end up thirty-seven times better by the time you’re done. Conversely, if you get 1 percent worse each day for one year, you’ll decline nearly down to zero. What starts as a small win or a minor setback accumulates into something much more.” ― James Clear,

not today lady, not today. SUNDAY THOUGHT

“What comes naturally to me? For just a moment, ignore what you have been taught. Ignore what society has told you. Ignore what others expect of you. Look inside yourself and ask, “What feels natural to me? When have I felt alive? When have I felt like the real me?” No internal judgments or people-pleasing. No second-guessing or self-criticism. Just feelings of engagement and enjoyment. Whenever you feel authentic and genuine, you are headed in the right direction.”

PROJECT SOBRIETY

Facing into my first sober summer has me somewhat rattled. I know I am a better version without alcohol so I have started archiving old family photographs and am LOVING this project of a summer evening. I have found some real treasures of my late mother and I will produce a nice photo book for my family this Christmas and this will bring endless joy. That is my project this summer. Day 176 - M.I. -

2022

PROJECT SOBRIETY

I found myself at a yoga class on the beach last week on vacation. I had to pinch myself as I had planned to do this for over a decade when we visited here, but I never could manage it with a "holiday" hangover. Last week, I was up and present at beachside yoga and I loved my life so very much. And I was so happy I was now one of 'those women' who could get up early on vacation and do a yoga class. -B.R.-

Try to live each day with joy and purpose,

or else, what is the fecking point?

Poems of the Week from Donna Ashworth WHATEVER MAKES YOU GLAD TO BE ALIVE, Do that, whenever you can.

I LOVE YOUR SHOES I said your hair looked amazing but what I really wanted to say was… “Your energy sparks a little bit of something in mine, your smile warms my heart, and when you laugh, I just have to laugh too, it’s like a bubbling stream of fresh water running through my soul. I feel like the sun is shining on me when you’re near and when I leave you, sad as it is, I feel like I’ve been charged, plugged into the mains for an infusion of fizz and life.”

Whatever gives your soul that lift and elevates you to a level of harmony, peace, and contentment, chase it and grab it tight. Stop seeing your life as a chore to be dealt with every day and start searching for gaps to put in blissful moments of joy. Nobody said life had to be this hard. Nobody made you sign up for a daily grind so punishing you couldn’t find the energy to do what makes you HAPPY. This life is short my friend and each of us don’t know how long we have, so let’s not waste another moment of another day feeling like a prop in our own show. We are the stars. We are the show. Get out there and love your life and if you can’t, make it more loveable. Change things around. It’s your life. Do whatever you need to do to get any kind of good feeling, every day. And start now, Right, this minute. The future is promised to no one, what are you waiting for?

But I said, “I love your shoes instead.” I hope you heard, what I really meant.

From Pledge 100 Ladies Having a glass of red wine by my side is a long-time habit, just like brushing my teeth. Unfortunately, addiction has taken over, and the effects of drinking are no fun anymore. I want this chatter in my brain to stop, the constant fighting between my subconscious and my upper brain. This is my main "never again" - fighting with myself. I am trying to make space for important things, for new things in my life. I cannot do this with a glass of wine in my hand (or make that a bottle). I saw this quote today from my friends today "He is the greatest conqueror who has conquered himself" (make that she/herself). Inner balance is my goal, and drinking wine does not agree with that. -H.B-

when I am on my daily walks, I notice the subtle changes, the surprises that nature gifts me with. These days there seem to be new wildflowers making their appearance daily. The small cluster of black-eyed Susans in a field, standing so proud. These flowers conjure sweet memories of when my daughter was very young and their appearance of them told us that her birthday was near. -A.H.- One thing in sobriety, the garden is thriving, and I’m loving tending daily for even 10 mins. My week last week was a bit all over the place, I came in the gate my beautiful foxglove was waning, rose looked wretched, I had taken my eye off the ball, I was distraught, they have given me so much in sobriety pride, and joy. I lathered the TLC, it is recovering slowly A bit like ourselves when we fail to attend to it. Lesson learned. So yes, my plants are my saviour., and give me joy. -Y.B- Sobriety means to me a healthier life, better sleep, more energy, and readiness to conquer the world. It means making plans and following through with them. While drinking I have many great ideas but following through is seldom happening. When I am not drinking I trust myself more to make the right decision. While drinking I never think things through, I am losing the power to think clearly. This I want to stop. -H.B.-

“ To The Woman Who Thinks She Isn’t Good Enough To the woman who looks around and wonders, why everyone else is so much more capable. So much stronger. So much more ambitious, than her. To the woman who thinks everyone else is blazing a fiery path through this thing we call life, while she limps behind, barely getting through the days.… Somewhere, another woman is looking at you thinking exactly the same, my friend. You see, we all look like we’re kinda nailing it, from the outside in. We all look ‘together’ sometimes. Catch us on the right day and hey, we look like we have it all. Because guess what, we learned to look that way a long time ago. We learned to hide our struggles behind a smile and whack on that mask every day. And actually, we are doing each other a favour when we show up, just as we are, warts and all, late, flustered, human. What we really need to see is that we are all the same. We all struggle. We all fall apart. Some days we nail it, other days we get nailed. By hiding our own weaknesses, fears, worries, we give them more power. If you let it out, shine a light on it all, it becomes so much less scary, funny even… And goodness only knows we need to laugh. So, to the woman who wonders if she is good enough… If this is you. Yes, you are. You always were. You don’t have to live up to everyone’s expectation of how you should be coping. You are human, flawed, wonderful, miraculous, loveable, loved. I see you, Now do me a favour and go see all the others too. Spread the word, we are good enough, just as we are. -Donna Ashworth-

card of the week

website The King of Wands pops up as the card of the week. This king is a visionary with magnetism galore, who strongly believes in fairness and justice for all. People want to be involved and help along with the goals and ambitions of a king like this and this king is more than happy to share the stage. A swoon-worthy character to be sure. This king’s on fire, look closely at his crown is made of flames. Robin Hood was a King of Wands, so to was Daenerys Targaryen, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Mother of Dragons, etcetera (until the last few episodes of “Game of Throne’s” what the hell was that? I’m still not over it!) Sorry, I digress, where was I….Oh yes, this will be a week where you pull your King of Wands energy out and command attention (in a good way). Don’t be afraid of the attention you may gain, or the followers you may attract as you start doing your own thing this week. This isn’t a popularity contest you are going to win, the key here is the actual “doing” it will give you the momentum you have been longing for. The rest is gravy.
