APPRECIATING THEIR GENEROSITY On Mother’s Day

17332 Von Karman Ave. Suite 120 Irvine, CA 92614

Mother’s Day is coming up this month, and I want to take the opportunity to appreciate the mothers in my life: my mother and my wife. They have blessed my life and the lives of my kids in so many ways. I’m incredibly thankful for how much my mother sacrificed for me and my sister when we were growing up and for how my wife sacrifices for our four kids now. My sister and I always felt taken care of when we were younger. My mom put her career as a nurse on hold to be present in our childhoods and raise us. She was incredibly giving and selfless, which makes her stand out to me as an amazing mom. My wife, Natalie, is equally as self-sacrificial in how she cares for our kids. She takes on the daunting challenge of home-schooling all four of our young children and, to me, that’s really taking it to the next level. She nurtures them in every sense of the word, is very much aware of all their needs, and loves them all immensely — and the kids love her and all the times she cuddles with them. She would do anything for them. The generosity of both my mother and my wife extends beyond their kids as well. They are both beautiful on the inside and outside.

Their selflessness is most evident in how they let friends and family laugh with them. My wife and my mother are both children of immigrants, and English was the second language in the houses they grew up in. My mother is of Dutch heritage, and my wife is Egyptian. This meant that for a while, they would both mix up little English phrases every now and again. My favorite “Hedy-ism” (named for my mother, Hedy) was when she used to try to say “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.” Instead, she

would say “We’ll get to that bridge when we come to it.” My favorite “Natalie-ism” was when she would mix the phrases “You’re driving me up the wall” and “You’re driving me batty,” saying, “You’re driving me up the batty wall.” In those instances, they would laugh and let us laugh with them. It doesn’t happen as much anymore, but when it does, we all still get a good laugh out of it. As my sister and I have grown up, I’ve been able to see my mother’s influence in our lives. I can see the same potential for my kids, and I would be lying if I said it wasn’t largely because of their mother. We all have full and blessed lives, and I think that’s largely a testament to the hard work and sacrifices of both my mother and my wife.

‘HEY, ALEXA!’ 3 WAYS A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT CAN HELP GET YOUR KIDS READY FOR SCHOOL

REMINDERS AND LISTS Alexa can also help you check off items from your family’s morning to-do lists to minimize the chaos of weekday mornings. You can create reminders to pack lunches or grab homework, and then all you have to do is ask, “Alexa, what are my reminders?” She will run down the list, so you can hit the road early without the nagging feeling that you left something behind. MAKE IT A GAME “Out the Door” is an interactive Alexa game that turns getting ready for school into an adventure for younger children. Each day, kids are given a new superpower and have to defeat a different creature as they complete “missions,” which include tasks like brushing their teeth and getting dressed. It makes the process of getting ready for school exciting and gives kids an incentive to fulfill their responsibilities. If you don’t already have an Echo Dot, you can find them at most major retail stores. Make your mornings less stressful by starting with “Hey, Alexa” and going from there.

Even though parents and kids everywhere are getting close to celebrating the last day of school this year, school day mornings are difficult no matter what season it is. Do you feel like you’ve run a marathon by 9 a.m. every day? Rest assured that you’re not alone. Mornings are often the most hectic and stressful part of a parent’s daily schedule. Fortunately, there is an inexpensive and popular device that can help take some of the pressure off your morning routine and get your kids to the bus on time: Amazon’s virtual assistant, Alexa! ALARMS OF ALL KINDS You can place an Echo Dot in your kid’s room and set an alarm that wakes them up to the weather report, a standard alarm sound, or their favorite tunes. You can also program Alexa to turn on a compatible bedside lamp so they wake up to light instead of sound, which offers a more calming way to wake up. If your kid decides to catch a few more z’s and ignore their alarm, you can use some of Alexa’s other features, like Drop In and Intercom, to start a two-way conversation or send announcements to all the kids’ rooms in the house.

WITH DR. GABE CARPIO UPCOMING SEMINAR ON JOINT HEALTH

asthma. While I try my best to develop relationships with my patients, I want them to be as involved in the healing process as possible, and sometimes that means sending them to work with an experienced physical therapist. For many of them, I recommend In Motion O.C. In Motion O.C. has been my go-to recommendation for patients from the Orange County area since I first learned of the clinic about a year-and-a-half ago. They offer many services that are not available in most other facilities, such as video analysis of an athlete’s form to better target areas that need healing. And perhaps even more beneficial than that technology, their physical therapists are passionate about getting people back to participating in the sports they love.

I always get positive feedback from the patients I send to In Motion O.C. They have a lot of good things to say about the physical therapists themselves and the personalized approach they take with every patient they receive. I am glad I have a physical therapy clinic close by, where I am confident my patients will receive the care they need. That is why I want to let readers know about the seminar I will be presenting at In Motion O.C. next month. The title of the presentation is “The Joint Effort! Keeping Your Joints healthy: A Sport Medicine Approach,” and it will be on May 14 at 7 p.m. The seminar is free, but an RSVP is required, and there are a limited number of seats left. You can go to the In Motion O.C. website to register.

LEAPS AND BOUNDS

THE FUTURE OF PHYSICAL THERAPY TECHNOLOGY New technologies continue to shape and change every profession, and physical therapy is no exception. Our constant search for better ways to heal chronic pain, treat injuries, and become stronger has led some innovative minds to create incredible tech that is reshaping how we heal. Here are a few examples that seem like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. MOTION CAPTURE AND ANALYSIS the Norton Mobility Lab in Louisville, children with conditions like cerebral palsy are turning games into exercises. Projected on a big screen in front of their exercise space, games dependent on correctly performing their routine hold a young child’s attention during repetitive exercises. With the help of VR, these children can take small steps into a larger, more technologically advanced world. AN APP TO IMPROVE YOUR BALANCE There’s an app for everything these days, including physical therapy. While some apps are merely

No matter how observant we are, we can’t perceive everything perfectly, and it’s no different for physical therapists. Using cameras to record patients’ movements helps PTs make more accurate assessments. In the past, it was up to PTs to analyze these movements unassisted. Now, computer programs use algorithms to track a person’s movements and analyze them in real time. This frees up PTs to actually work with patients instead of poring over camera footage and logging and analyzing movements. VIRTUAL REALITY THERAPY While still miles away from a totally immersive VR experience, the distraction from the real world that virtual reality provides is already benefiting physical therapy patients.
