MADDEN PHYSICAL THERAPY

The Patients Who Motivate Me Each Day Why I Love My Job

P atient transformations are what get me out of bed in the morning. I’m excited to come to work every day knowing that I can make a difference in my patients’ lives. As we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month this October, I can’t help but think of some of the many stories I hear from patients about how physical therapy has changed their lives.

If you would have told me at that time that I would be where I am today, I wouldn’t have believed you. I graduated from Lebanon’s PT doctoral program in 2012, and I began my career at Madden Physical Therapy. It was at this clinic that I found amazing opportunities to grow, not only as a therapist but also as a leader. I’ve traveled around the nation and taught manual therapy techniques to therapists. (It’s not lost on me that this means I’m able to help patients across the nation.) I’ve been handed the reigns of one of Madden’s sister clinics, and I’m teaching these techniques at my alma mater. Physical therapy has given my life a direction that I could have only dreamed about when I started my education at Lebanon. But beyond the accomplishments and the changes in my eight-year career, I always come back to what I can do for my patients. I firmly believe that helping people heal naturally, without injections, opioids, or even surgery, is a powerful way to help build wellness in our community. Sometimes we’re the last stop people make before inquiring with a surgeon. We see some patients at the lowest points in their lives, and we’re proud to offer them the support, exercise, and training that they need and deserve to lead a healthier, happier life. There’s nothing I love more than seeing a patient get back to the life they want. I love working with my patients each and every day. The Dauphin community has embraced us, and our patients continue to impress us. This National Physical Therapy Month, we’re celebrating you and are thankful for the opportunities you give us.

I’ll never forget the mother I treated when I worked at Madden Physical Therapy in Harrisburg. She was attending physical therapy because she had difficulty walking, and at one particular appointment, she seemed more emotional than she had ever been. Finally, I asked her what was going on. What followed is something that still gives me goosebumps to this day. She explained that her son had died years earlier, and because of her physical limits, she had never been able to walk up the large hill to visit her son’s grave — until the day before this appointment. That was the first time she walked up the hill and visited her son’s grave since he had been buried. I was stunned. It still gives me chills to think about how something so simple as therapeutic movement gave this woman an opportunity to finally see her son’s resting place. When I think back on these stories and all that physical therapy has given me, I can’t help but recount that where I am today is merely through chance. I don’t have one of those miraculous origins where I was once an injured athlete and physical therapy helped me come back stronger than ever. (Although I have seen that happen.) Football led me to physical therapy, but it’s only because I was recruited to play football at Lebanon Valley College. I ended up never playing a single down of football in college, but it was at that time that I discovered the college’s extensive physical therapy program. It appealed to me and my drive to find a career in sports, so I took the leap.

You’re why we get out of bed each morning.

How to Stop Procrastinating at Bedtime

And Get a Good Night’ s Sleep

Though there are very real medical conditions, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, that deprive people of sleep, the reason most of us probably don’t get enough sleep is simply because we put off our bedtime. Instead of getting into bed, we opt to check off another item on our to-do list or watch another episode of our favorite show. This is sometimes called “bedtime procrastination.” We all know a good night’s sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, so how can we stop putting it off? A good place to start is by keeping track of your day. The human mind isn’t meant to internalize checklists and task reminders, so use your phone or journal as a scheduling assistant. However you decide to keep track, make sure to give yourself a set amount of time to accomplish your tasks, like letting yourself watch TV for just one hour or blocking out three hours to help your kids with their homework. It might even help to set alarms on your watch or on your phone to let you know when your time is up on any of your activities. Another big part is creating an environment that is conducive to a good night’s sleep, and that starts with turning your electronic devices off well before you get under the covers. Smartphone screens, computer screens,

and even some energy-efficient lightbulbs emit blue light, which reduces the production of melatonin, the hormone that tells your body it’s time to go to bed. Instead of looking at your phone, try reading a book before going to sleep. If your screens prove to be too big of a draw for you when bedtime comes, it might be a good idea to move your devices to another room so they’re out of sight and out of mind. Finally, don’t get discouraged if you don’t start getting better sleep right away. Setting up good bedtime routines takes time. But if you stick with it — and maybe have someone else in your house hold you accountable to your commitments — you’ll start to get better sleep and have more energy to take on the day in no time.

“I have more mobility and less pain in my shoulder than when I started physical therapy. My range of motion has increased considerably. I’m very thankful for the help I’ve received here. I am able to sleep better too. In addition to the physical improvement, I have enjoyed getting to know the staff at Madden. Each member of the team is compassionate, is cheerful, and makes coming in so enjoyable. I highly recommend Madden in Dauphin to anyone in need of physical therapy. They’re also working hard to keep everyone safe from the coronavirus. So professional in every way.” –Colleen S.

A LONG, STORIED HISTORY

T oday, you may visit Madden Physical Therapy Dauphin for your shoulder pain or knee issues, but in years past, you may have seen a physical therapist because you were a gymnast, a polio patient, or a veteran in World War I. It was in that background that breakthroughs occurred and led to the physical therapy we know today. Historians have linked physical therapy to Greek philosophers, who preached the benefits of similar techniques used in the practice today. But the “father of physical therapy” is often said to be Pehr Henrik Ling, a Swedish practitioner who founded the Royal Central Gymnastics Institute in 1813. It was here that gymnasts did exercises to improve their mobility and heal. It was another century before physical therapy found its way to the U.S. In the early 20th century, Reed College began training “reconstruction aides,” who were largely female. The U.S. would recruit these aides to treat polio patients and WWI soldiers in 1916 when Walter Reed Army Hospital became the first official school of physical therapy in the U.S. Five years later, Mary McMillan founded the American Women’s Physical Therapy Association (so called because of how heavily the industry was dominated by women). Today the organization is known as the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), How Physical Therapy Has Evolved

A team of physical therapists fromWalter Reed Army Hospital in 1920

and it’s the foundation for the industry’s research and progress. The APTA provided strong evidence of physical therapy’s viability and efficacy. Many historians believe that if it had not been for the APTA’s research and the women who pushed the industry forward, the practice would not be as strong as it is today, nor would it have progressed as far. Physical therapy clinics today are offering options like laser therapy, which, when combined with standard therapy regimens, can activate “healing cells” to speed up the healing process and help patients feel better much faster.

As the industry has progressed, the qualifications for therapists have as well. Practitioners today are required to receive a doctorate, complete clinical rotations, and pass rigorous testing in order to treat patients. The profession has come a long way since it was first implemented in Sweden, but study after study has come to the same conclusion: Physical therapy is one of the safest treatment options that can drastically improve a patient’s quality of life. Do Your Friends Know We Treat These 3 Conditions Too?

Tell Your Friends Exactly How We Can Help Them! Relief Is Possible

Headaches While common, headaches are not normal. They are actually a signal from your body that something is wrong! A headache can point to a lot of different ailments, including nerve issues or neck pain, and we can help patients find and treat the source. Those who experience chronic headaches don’t have to suffer. With our help, relief is possible.

Physical therapy sure has grown since its inception in Sweden. (Did you not know it had Swedish origins? Check out our article on Page 3 to learn more about the history of physical therapy and how the methodology has changed over time.) From gymnasts to polio sufferers and wounded soldiers, physical therapy has evolved into a specialized one-on-one healing experience for patients with many different ailments So, just how specialized is the practice? If you know someone who suffers from the following conditions — and many others — let them know that we can offer treatment! You just might have a hand in their healing (and bragging rights forever!). Arthritis Joint pain is debilitating. We rely on our joints to keep us active, moving, and limber, but when inflammation limits this movement, arthritis can set in. There is currently no cure for arthritis, but it can be effectively managed through healing movements and a proper diet. That’s where we come in! We often show arthritis patients the most effective ways to exercise and move and can offer them relief from big flare-ups.

Balance Issues One of the biggest threats older adults face is falling, and for many, falls occur because of a loss of balance. But the risk of this threat can be decreased with prevention. We can help older adults prevent falls by improving their balance and addressing any vertigo issues they might have through movements and exercises designed to target their needs.
