REMEMBERING THE BRAVE AND PRAISING THE GREAT HONORING OUR HEROES

As we approach summer, the weather is continuing to warm up, the end of the school year is almost here, and we are all ready for some fun summer activities. The month of May is one of honor, respect, and appreciation as we celebrate both Memorial Day and Mother’s Day. On Memorial Day, which was originally known as Decoration Day, we remember all members of the United States Armed Forces who lost their lives in the line of duty. It used to be a tradition for citizens to decorate the graves of those men and women with flags, wreaths, and flowers. On May 30, 1868, the first Memorial Day was observed to remember all of the lives lost in the Civil War. As Herbert Hoover once said, “It was the transcendent fortitude and steadfastness of these men who in adversity and in suffering

mothers teach us how to love, show kindness to others, thrive, and survive. As the saying goes, there is no love like a mother’s. And it’s true. Our moms love us unconditionally, no matter how many

mistakes we make or the trouble we cause. They accept us for who we are and only nag us from time to time because they truly care. Unfortunately, some lack a mother figure in their lives, and my hope is that they are raised with the same tenacity, love, and determination that a mother possesses. Many are fortunate enough to have another family

member or guardian step in, and they too should be celebrated, not only on Mother’s Day but year round!

My mother is the most influential person in my life. As a single mother, she raised me and my other siblings alone. At times, she struggled, but because she was so devoted to her children, she always prevailed. Growing up, it seemed as if her patience was limitless, and she was always there to cheer me up. I can truly say that if it weren’t for my mom, I wouldn’t be where I am today. On Mother’s Day, and every day, it’s paramount that we take the time to celebrate all mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures in our lives. Every day, another baby is born and another woman becomes a mother, the greatest blessing in the world.

through the darkest hour of our history held faithful to an ideal. Here men endured that a nation might live.”

On Mother’s Day, we celebrate the bond between a mother and her children. Without moms, where would we be as a society? Starting from when we are children, our

To all of our mothers out there, happy Mother’s Day!

Cravings — they can feel like a comforting friend or a gut- punching enemy, depending on what you’re craving. An estimated 90% of people experience cravings, and believe it or not, all cravings are not bad. Leaning into our healthy cravings can help establish a healthy diet. Don’t worry, we’re thinking the same thing: “If that’s the case, why do we crave sugary snacks and fatty foods the most?!” It’s complicated, but understanding your brain is a great place to start. What are cravings, really? Decades of research have proven that cravings start in our brain, not our body. This might be shocking for some, since it was commonly believed for a long time that if you were craving a steak, you were probably low in iron. However, the brain connection makes way more sense. Think about it: Does your body love circulating excess sugar that can lead to health complications, or does your brain enjoy sugar more? After all, sugar releases the feel-good neurotransmitter dopamine, which our brains love. A chocolate milkshake or lemon bar helps us feel good by literally triggering our brain’s pleasure centers. That means when we’re unhappy, stressed, or needing a pick-me-up, we might start craving foods that comfort us, such as ice cream. How do I stop craving unhealthy things? One thing is for sure: Restrictive diets don’t always work. It’s hard to “rewire” the brain by completely rejecting how it currently operates. Instead, you might want to consider accepting your cravings, but make slow and deliberate changes to how you satisfy those cravings. For example, if you’re craving potato chips, why not try kale chips or another crunchy but healthier alternative you already enjoy? If you’re craving soda, why not crush some fresh fruit into sparkling water instead? Make it a treat, make it special, but make it healthier. What Are Cravings? How Do I Stop Them? HOW PLAYING THE LONG GAME HELPS OVERCOME CRAVINGS

Eating more filling, nutrient-dense food and getting more sleep are also

great ways to fight cravings. It leaves little time or room for binging on bad foods. However, a 6-month 2018 study in the National Institutes of Health has shown that flexibility in your diet can make a difference for making real, meaningful changes to your lifestyle long term. By overcoming shame and accepting your cravings, you won’t fear making a single mistake as much. It’s all about playing the long game.

The History of the Kentucky Derby

Published by Newsletter Pro • www.NewsletterPro.com

The History of the Kentucky Derby GIDDY UP! Hooves are hitting the dirt this month at Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. Since 1875, races have been taking place at Churchill Downs, and the Kentucky Derby has run continuously each year. Also known as the “Run for the Roses,” 3-year-old thoroughbreds race for 1.25 miles, producing what many believe to be the most exciting two minutes of continuous action of all sporting events. All of the fun originated from overseas inspiration. Back in 1872, William Clark’s (from the Lewis and Clark pair) grandson, Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., attended the Epsom Derby in England and was awestruck by the spectacle. He was determined to recreate the event back home, so with the assistance of his uncles, John and Henry Churchill, he organized a group of race fans known as the Louisville Jockey Club. On May 17, 1875, the first Kentucky Derby took place at Churchill Downs racetrack. Today, many gather to observe the races and place bets, and there’s even a fashion tradition, too — hats! The Kentucky Derby is now just as much about fashion as it is about the horses! The hats displayed each year are fun and exciting and make for a great time! In fact, sporting a hat to the races is actually believed to be a form of good luck! On May 7, whether you’re watching from home or lucky enough to attend, this year’s 20 thoroughbreds running at Churchill Downs are sure to get your heart racing! It’ll be a grand time!
