PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Our Club is in full swing for the season. Spring golf and tennis events are underway, the pool will be open shortly and the staff is excited to see the members enjoy full use of all our great facilities. So come on out and enjoy! I am at the Club most days and welcome the opportunity to talk to members. Hearing your questions and comments is how I develop topics that might be appropriate to bring to the Committee Chairs or the Board’s attention. It is most helpful if I can get your comments and questions in writing, so please don’t hesitate to send me a note. One question I get frequently is why we have the greeters by the Breezeway? The answer is that while there can be periods of downtime for the greeters, they play a vital role in improving the guest experience at WCC. Many of our quests arrive without their member host and can feel lost trying to navigate the Club.We heard this repeatedly for years. The professionalism and friendly assistance of the greeters improves first impressions and sets the stage for an exceptional experience. And remember, guests can often become future members! Gary Ferguson President

A NOTE FROM PHIL

May Greetings! Although the outdoor sporting seasons started last month, the weather really wasn’t too cooperative. Now that we are turning the calendar to May, we expect that temperatures will rise and so will levels of activity. This Bulletin is packed full of information regarding upcoming events and activities, so please take a moment and review it thoroughly. I have a number of miscellaneous items to share with you. •The patio is now open for your dining pleasure! Please be reminded that tables may not be reserved in this area. • While dining on the patio, parents and grandparents are also reminded that the putting green is considered part of the golf practice facilities and not a playground. Please help your youngsters understand appropriate use and attire for this area. •There are two additional outdoor venues to enjoy as both Pub37 and the Café 1901 have their own patios. Use of each subscribes to the age and dress codes that coincide with the particular venue. • Opening the patios also means that warm weather is here and with it comes a change in the way we dress. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the rules of attire that have been established by your fellow members for the various Clubhouse venues/entrances. Please do your best to always support the spirit of those standards. • Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 15th. All dining venues will be open for regular business including an expanded brunch in the Tavern/ Grille. The Mother’s Day Grand Buffet kicks off at 4:00 pm. After that, only the Grand Buffet will be offered. Seatings for that are available every half-hour until 6:30 pm. Make your reservation now to join us for one of our biggest events of the year! • There are several additional Food & Beverage events taking place in May. It begins on Thursday the 3rd with the Bellefonte Brewing Dinner. Cinco de Mayo specials will be offered all day in Pub37 on Saturday the 5th and we have our first Lobster Night of the season on May 10th. Check out this Bulletin for more information about all these events. • By now you should have received information about all our summer programs. We are pleased to offer more opportunities for you and your kids to use the Club than ever before. Sign up and enjoy the summer! • In Golf, the first Mixed Twilight of the season will be held on

Thursday the 17th. Sign-ups are underway. • Bocce, Pickleball and Croquet are already underway. Leagues have been loosely organized to coordinate play but allow for members to jump in and out as schedules demand. Call the Racquet Shop for more information. • We are currently revising some of our group fitness programs to carry us through the summer season. And don’t forget that Massage treatments may be scheduled through the Fitness Department. Please watch for follow-up emails that will outline the specifics of any adjustments. • This is the time of the year when activity in the parking lots really picks up. Please slow down and use caution. Parents with small children, please hold hands. The threat of a tragedy is always present. • Parking along the curb in front of the Clubhouse requires displaying a valid ADA permit. • I know it seems contrary to golf instinct, but we continue to ask that when using a cart on the South, you keep traffic in the fairway. Also, please strictly adhere to all signage, roping or traffic directional information on the courses. While permitting cart traffic as much as possible, we will be increasing our effort on minimizing the damage they create to turf and playing conditions. Your help is necessary and appreciated! • The Pool and Poolside Café will officially open for Memorial Weekend, Saturday, May 26th at 10:00 am. Unofficially, if the weather is favorable, we may just feature a special “pre-opening” swim party on Friday the 26th.Watch your email and our Social Media platforms for more information as the day draws closer. • Once the Poolside Café opens, food service at the “Hut” will be curtailed for the summer. Beverages and snacks will continue to be offered. • As activity picks up, a gentle reminder that the voice use of cellular telephones is prohibited at the Club. Please keep your device silent. While it may be used for texting or checking email, please use discretion when choosing where and when you use your phone. If you are seen using a cell phone inappropriately, we will remind you of the policy and ask you to discontinue use. Members are urged to inform their guests of this rule. As you can see, there is more going on around your Club than ever before. Hopefully, you will have an opportunity to enjoy the offerings. As always, thanks for reading, and I’ll see you at the Club! TRI CLUB SOCIAL RSVP by Sunday, May 6th with the Front Desk [email protected]

BOOK CLUB Our Tuesday, May 1st selection, Fredrik Backman’s poignant book Beartown , takes place in an isolated, small town in Sweden that is failing fast as it continues to lose young people and commerce to the larger nearby towns. However, the residents have hope that things will improve as the town’s junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national hockey semifinals and they have a chance of winning and bringing glory and economic revival to Beartown. Having the hopes and dreams of a town placed on the shoulders of its teenage hockey players is a tremendous burden. Emotions are at a fever-pitch when the juniors win their semi- final match, but darkness shatters the euphoria and dreams when the community learns a violent act occurred against a young girl the night of the team’s victory and their star player is involved. Without him, the team can’t win the championship. People are in disbelief and take sides.Scandalous lies are flung about. This act affects everyone; it shatters their dreams and tears the community apart. Yet with all the anguish and tears, you will find that love, sacrifice and the bonds of friendship shine through, thereby offering hope and inspiration. Join us in the Ladies’ Locker Room at 4:00 pm on the 1st as Phyllis Aerenson and Patrice Sysko lead the discussion of this unforgettable book. Our June selection is Ronald H. Balson’s compelling thriller, Once We Were Brothers . Two young men are raised as brothers, yet find themselves on opposite sides in the Holocaust. Sixty years later, a prominent businessman and philanthropist is accused of being a Nazi war criminal. Is he? Is this a frame-up or an authentic attempt to bring a war criminal to justice? You won’t be able to stop reading

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS

POLLINATOR MEADOWS

The members ofWilmington Country Club have historically taken great pride in their sensitivity to our natural environment as well as our obligation to do all we can to be responsible stewards of this wonderful setting cradled within pristine and historically famed DelawareValley.Together with the total dedication to excellence in overall presentation, our Club has pursued a number of significant programs that are dedicated to environmental stewardship. These initiatives include our continued commitment to Audubon Sanctuary Certification, the WCC Blue Bird Trail and more recent Purple Martin and Osprey nesting programs. Toward the end of last year’s fruit season, discussion was initiated among knowledgeable and environmentally active WCC members about the possibility of revisiting the Apiary (bee-keeping) program that had previously been considered here at Wilmington Country Club. In concert with leading members of the Grounds staff, the subject matter was enthusiastically investigated prior to any thought of advancing a proposal for Board approval. Information was garnered from initial meetings with an extremely knowledgeable consultant, Don Coats. He suggested conservation efforts could be more helpful to the environment and more widely appreciated by WCC members if we created attractive native habitat for all pollinators. We learned that European honey bees are considered agricultural stock animals, and the winter losses we read about are restored on bee farms in the south, shipped by truck-loads of “packages” and relocated in all regions. The honey bee industry loses about 30% of their stock annually, requiring regular spring replacement. The importance of honey bees as pollinators for a significant amount of our farm and floral crops is widely recognized. There is a growing concern however, that honey bees may crowd out native bees, share viruses with them, and may enhance pollination of invasive plant species. So it is our native bees that also need help. Their decline is continuous, not restored. Native bees evolved over eons with native plants, pollination for berries, fruit and our floral landscape. They need native habitat which humans can appreciate as well. There are well over 100 bee hives located between Greenville and Chadds Ford. These bees have little or no crop pollination need in this area except for two CSA farms where they indeed, have hives. Ninety percent of these

hives are motivated by the hobby passion of their owners and their quest for collecting honey. The reality is that the first and best thing thatWCC can do to assist in this important area of our natural environment is to create greater areas of meadows or wildflowers that will support all forms of pollinators. With this information in hand, we devised a plan. The first step is to pick an area that would be appropriate for development of our first pollinator meadow. Many character actors were considered, and it was concluded that the area behind the North Snack Stand, left of #10 North tee, would provide the proper exposure, be out of play, provide an attractive aesthetic value, and would also be close to our fruit trees which will benefit from native orchard bees. The second step will be to provide a limited display area that would provide our members a limited representation of the meadow and wildflower plants available and what they might look like at maturity if envisioned in larger forms of planting. This area will be grown from plugs and will mature quickly as opposed to a much larger area that would be grown from seed. The third step would be to develop the size and shape of the desired larger areas of presentation and the dynamics of support necessary to grow from seed and to maintain thereafter. This certainly promises to be an exciting undertaking that will add great value to our already established environmentally friendly efforts. Not only will it be a vibrant backdrop to the North Snack Stand, but we will be helping to sustain the local populations of pollinators that provide us with such abundant annual fruit in our orchard. Additionally, periodic presentations can be offered by appropriate resource experts in natural history that will help club members appreciate the contributions they are making for conservation.Appropriate signage and newsletter articles will also keep members abreast of the habitat progress. Most people are unaware that there are such important and fascinating creatures as native bees. There are about 200 species in Delaware. The conservation of butterflies should not be overlooked. The proposed array of wildflowers, in clusters that will eventually spread to multiple locations, will attract Monarchs, Swallow Tails, Cabbage, and many others. The potential enhancement of this pleasant visual experience should inspire the informed observer if attentive to the beauty of “little things.”

BLUEBIRDS & PURPLE MARTINS WCC BIRD PROGRAM

Greetings from the WCC Bird Team! We all should be very proud that WCC has earned its certification as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. What this means, in a nutshell, is that ourWCC Grounds staff and crew works to maintain the course, environs and facilities in a manner that is environmentally friendly. There are six areas that are evaluated by Audubon International - one of those areas is Wildlife Management, e.g.: our Bluebird Trail and Purple Martin Condos. 2018 marks our fifth year for the Bluebird Trail, now 30-nesting boxes strong, mostly along the cart-path of the North Course and the third year for our Purple Martin T-14 condos clustered just to the East of the pumphouse below the green on 12-North see our 2018 Trail Map. Last year we fledged approximately: 150-Bluebirds, 60-Tree Swallows, and 50-Purple Martins, (fledging is the number of young birds that successfully hatch and leave the nest to become adults) pretty amazing don’t ya think.

The really good news is that most of these “fledges” will return to WCC to set up “house” and raise their own families. Why Bluebirds (BB) and Purple Martins (PM)? Well, not only are these two-species beautiful to look at and listen to, they also eat many pounds of insects, many of which we consider to be pests. This in turn allows our WCC Grounds Crew to curb the use of pesticides. Also, both BB’s & PM’s are classified as “threatened” and need our help. Bluebirds and Purple Martins nest in cavities, historically in trees. However, as trees have been cut, their natural habitat has been severely reduced. Study after study has shown that BBs & PMs are attracted to if not prefer artificial cavity nests, just like our WCC nesting-boxes. It has been shown that “monitoring” of the nesting boxes, on a weekly basis, will lead to a much more successful nesting and a better fledging rate. This monitoring process involves checking the nesting progress of each of our 30-BB-boxes and 28-PM condo units, by a 2-person Team of WCC members, usually on Monday,

and recording in summary detail what is happening in each nesting-unit, it usually takes about an hour to complete. During the nest-box check if nests of invasive and unwanted species, such as sparrows or wrens are discovered, these are removed, provided there are no eggs in the nest, thereby leaving the boxes clean and available for the desirable species, in our case, Bluebirds and Tree Swallows and Purple Martins in the T-14 PM-Condo Units. Monitoring is not only a key element of our WCC Bird Program, it is easy and lots of fun. Almost all of our Monitors report how they become very attached if not parental to these beautiful creatures. If you have any questions, suggestions or if this is something that you would be interested in please send me an e-mail ([email protected]) or give me a ring - (302) 547-6947. In addition to the great work of our Monitors, our WCC Bird program owes its success in good measure to the interest and efforts of Dan Pierson, Head of Grounds, and his very capable Team.
