BILL AMBERG PRINT Leather expert Bill Amberg brings together leading creatives for his third collection of digitally-printed leather hides. This year’s collaborators include Kesewa Aboah, Bethan Gray, Yinka Ilori, Amber Khokhar and Jonathan Saunders. Providing a modern take on leather decoration, the hides are designed for upholstery and interior architectural use. Each collaborator has created designs which showcase the incredible possibilities of digitally- printed leather. As the world’s most coveted printed upholstery leathers, Bill Amberg Print hides combine forward-thinking contemporary design with an innovative natural leather, developed to celebrate the characteristics and beauty of the material. Bill Amberg commented: “As our group of friends and collaborators grows, I wanted to reach out to some creatives whose work I have admired for a long time. Spanning a range of disciplines, our designers have drawn inspiration from literature, symbolism, colour theory and travel. The third Bill Amberg Print collection offers a truly eclectic mix of printed leather designs, which I feel will resonate with the growing audience we are seeing across Europe, the Middle East and North America.”

NEW FOR 2020 BETHAN GRAY

As an award-winning product and furniture designer, Bethan Gray is fuelled by a deep- seated curiosity about global art and culture. With a collaborative approach at the heart of her creative practice, Bethan’s London-based studio creates furniture and home accessories for a roster of adoring clients and some of the world’s most prestigious retailers. Inky Dhow is inspired by the sails of Dhow boats; traditional Arabian sailing vessels, whose lateen sails are made from fabric strips which are sewn together. Bethan painted the print 1:1 on a large roll of watercolour paper, using ultramarine ink. The pattern’s fluid lines capture the movement of the sails billowing in the wind.

NEW FOR 2020 YINKA ILORI

Fusing his British and Nigerian heritage to tell new stories in contemporary design, Yinka Ilori is a London-based multidisciplinary artist. From furniture and products to large-scale architectural projects, his work is humorous, provocative and fun – covering subjects from travel and urbanism, to the traditional Nigerian parables and West African fabrics that surrounded him as a child. Love is Blind is a response to the poetic work ‘For Every One’, by the author Jason Reynolds. The inspirational book is about not giving up on your dreams, and Yinka’s design considers how one might interpret dreams, and what these might look like as a pattern. Sketched by hand, then transferred digitally, the colour selection, for Yinka, captures the essence of the book and its subject.

NEW FOR 2020 AMBER KHOKHAR

An artist, designer and educator, Amber combines her background in design with a diverse academic and practical knowledge of traditional art, to create enchanting designs, paintings and products. Working from her London studio on commissions for private and public clients, recent projects include work for HRH The Prince of Wales, Rolls- Royce and the Islamic Arts Museum, Malaysia. Amber’s print is part of a series called Decagram; Deca meaning 10 and Gram, identifying the star. Fascinated by the symbolism behind numbers and the qualities they carry, the design is a crystalline pattern that explores five- and ten-fold geometries. Emanating out from a 10-pointed star that sits in the centre of the rosette, the work references notions of inclusivity, oneness and spirituality.

NEW FOR 2020 KESEWA ABOAH A Ghanaian-British artist based in London, Kesewa’s practice has a heavy focus on process: modernising techniques of embroidery and body imprinting to create a bold, colourful and sometimes haunting version of the 21st century tapestry. Affording each work a narrative in both physicality and concept, Kesewa has completed residency programs in Mexico, Iceland and Kenya. Part of a series of work based around the poem the ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Alba portrays imagery derived from the text, which tells the story of a sailor who gets cursed when he kills an albatross in flight. The body impression was created in a base nude tone, with layers added in dry pigment, evincing the reds and oranges Aboah drew from the poem.

NEW FOR 2020 JONATHAN SAUNDERS

With a background as one of the most celebrated creatives working in fashion, Jonathan Saunders is renowned for his compelling use of colour and his skills working in print. The former Chief Creative Officer of Diane von Furstenberg launched his eponymous furniture and textiles collection at Frieze Art Fair in February 2020; exploring a series of modern takes on traditional craft techniques. Wander is an engineered graphic print of tonal neutrals that graduate from a light centre to a dark border – intended to frame whatever it is applied to, creating depth across the hide and the finished piece. The work is inspired by Colour Theory, as taught at the Bauhaus art school; a process-led ideology that studies the changing path of colour tones via applied gradients.

MARCEL WANDERS

Under his powerhouse design studio, the acclaimed Dutch designer and art director creates products and interiors for a roster of international clients and premium brands. Wanders is also owner and designer for the award-winning design label, Moooi. Offering two exclusive designs under his SFM or ‘Studies for a Mosque’ series, SFM 42 and SFM 37 are fractals based on Marcel’s unique computational language of infinite geometries. Inspired by the sacred mathematics of nature – as seen across the plant and animal worlds – their artwork repeats across varying scales, adding a new three- dimensionality to the leather hides.

CALICO WALLPAPER Nick and Rachel Cope founded their Brooklyn- based design house in 2013. Combining artisanal methods from the decorative arts, such as traditional marbling and dip- dying techniques, with innovative digital technologies, they are an award-winning designer of bespoke wallpapers. Relic is an exploration in layering; a methodical overlay of translucent materials and glazing enhances the illusion of movement and depth. To create the work, a process of layering sheer tissue paper both obscures and defines the design, while masking and revealing the background in a delicate interplay between positive and negative space.

CHAMPALIMAUD With a remarkable portfolio that spans contemporary private residences, and many of the top hotels and restaurants around the globe, New York-based Champalimaud is one of the most respected names working in interior design today. Named after a river in West London, Crane is Champalimaud’s second design for Bill Amberg Print, and is inspired by the convergence of collaged shapes and the cadent reverberating ripples on water during a light rainfall. While the print is geometrically impactful, the colours are subdued – composed of shades of white, clay-toned greys, rust and soft oranges.

MATTHEW DAY JACKSON Matthew Day Jackson is an American artist whose multifaceted works encompass sculpture, painting, collage, photography, video and installation. With numerous solo exhibitions since 2001, his art addresses notions of creation, growth, transcendence and the American Dream. Comprising two designs, Matthew’s ‘1969’ series for Bill Amberg Print includes an image of the Far Side of the Moon , alongside Tie-Dye . With an interest in how process can create organic images in a variety of materials, both hides work with the principles of dyes and resists, specifically when applying waterborne pigment to leather.

LISA MILLER Celebrated as one of the leading textile designers in the United States, Los Angeles-based Lisa Miller has created artwork and textile prints for some of the world’s most renowned fashion and interior design houses. Available in four colourways, Linear Cubes references the art produced in 1920’s and early 1930’s Paris, specifically Cubism and the work of Sonia Delaunay. Using geometrics in an unstructured loose format, with blocked colour, Lisa’s design was sketched by hand and block printed, before being digitally scanned. Shades of cream, celadon and grey provide a sophisticated, yet accessible palette.

SOLANGE AZAGURY-PARTRIDGE As founder of her namesake brand, Solange; the British designer is renowned for her exquisite jewellery and interiors. Her work features in the permanent collections of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and Les Arts Décoratifs at the Louvre in Paris. All the Colours addresses the use of colour as an instinctive and visceral need. A single beam of light, radiating from the centre of the hide acts as the focus, separating light into its constituent spectral colours. For Solange, colour travels through the eyes to permeate the psyche, vibrating and creating an internal positive energy one cannot live without.
