Our Purpose, Our Vision Our Process To Articulate our Strategic Plan
From October 2021 - January 2022, NBCDI embarked on a series of sessions and focused events to collaboratively build our strategic articulation to guide our work for the next five years. Facilitated by Your Crescendo, we began with affirming our purpose and built all other elements of
As part of our launch and in an effort to 'hear every voice', we conducted of SOAR Focus Groups (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, Results) focused on Board, Staff, Funders, Affiliates and Partners. We also conducted a Net Promoter Score survey that included 143 NBCDI stakeholders that included members, conference attendees and educators. Once these insights were gathered and reframed around themes, we shared them with a strategic planning team of selected board, staff, affiliates, partners and funders. This group went through a series of carefully facilitated exercises to cast new visions, affirm our purpose and develop our plan for NBCDI going forward.

A New Vision through an Old, Wise View-Master.

Charles Harrison, while Chief Product Designer for Sears, Roebuck and Company refashioned the View-Master toy that led to its overwhelming popularity and oversaw the design of hundreds of products. When he first interviewed for a job at Sears in the mid-1950s, he was told they would not hire him because he was black. Five years later, he became the company’s first African-American executive.
Spelman graduate, Veronica N. Chapman, created a product that provides reel representation, pairing a love for the nostalgic View-Master with the empowering art of Black illustrators.

NBCDI is a distinguished center for thought leaders, scholarship and research on Black children and families.
We have convened an advisory council of thought leaders and researchers to inform the development of our research agenda. We have a research agenda that drives our advocacy agenda.
