Wilmington Country Club is considered one of the finest and oldest facilities in the country with a large active membership. Featuring 36 holes of championship golf, seven food and beverage outlets including elegant dining and ballrooms, 20 various surfaces tennis courts, paddle courts, indoor tennis, squash and family pool. The Club has had the privilege of hosting the following golf championships: 1913 U.S. Women’s Amateur, 1965 U.S. Junior Amateur, 1971 U.S. Amateur, 1978 U.S. Junior Amateur, 1978 U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur, 2003 U.S. Mid-Amateur and 2013 Arnold Palmer Cup. Selected in 1998 to lead the golf program and continue its reputation as one of the top private club’s in the country by administering an active golf program, with the overall member experience being top priority. Manage day-to-day operations: budgeting, policy and procedure development, member assimilation & services, tournament and junior program development, instruction, purchasing, inventory control, staffing, and training. Hired and developed key employees including six assistants that have gone on to pursue their own Head Golf Professional / Director of Golf positions.

• Efficiently manage an annual budget of $1.75 million while consistently meeting or exceeding projections.

• Seamlessly execute a tournament operations program that includes major member events in addition to

• Administer the WCC Junior Golf Program which resulted in over 1,000 hours of junior golf instruction in

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE The Kahkwa Club – Erie, Pa 1986 to 1998: Head Golf Professional

The Kahkwa Club was founded in 1893 originally as a baseball club. Golf was introduced in 1899 and in 1916 Donald Ross was retained to design the golf course. Today it is considered one of the finest clubs in Pennsylvania and it has hosted numerous local, state and national championships including the 1971 U.S. Women’s Open, 2004 Women’s Amateur and the 2016 Women’s Mid-Amateur.

Piney Branch boasts the diversity of northwest Baltimore County’s rolling hills, with generous tree lined fairways, and exquisite bent grass greens. Piney Branch is an excellent test of golf for all levels of play and offers a variety of dining options for members and their guests. Piney Branch has been home to the 2006, 2007 and 2011 U.S. Amateur Qualifier.

We run a total of 12 Annual Championships, inclusive of men and women. These are long standing events, most of which have a history that extends back nearly 100 years. While it is important to uphold the tradition of these events, slight adjustments are required to reflect the changing dynamics of the modern member. Working closely with the Golf Committees, schedules are established early in the year. Highlights of each program are below.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the members of the Wilmington Country Club, I would like to extend an invitation to the Colonial Athletic Association to conduct the 2012 Men’s Golf Championship. Wilmington Country Club has had the pleasure of hosting several state and national golf championships. For the USGA we have hosted the Boy’s Junior in 1965 and the U.S. Amateur in 1971. In 1978 we simultaneously hosted the Boy’s and Girls’ Junior Championships and in 2003 we hosted the U.S. Mid- Amateur Championship. Our South Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, has recently undergone a restoration guided by Keith Foster. The course reopened in 2008 and now plays at over 7300 yards. This will surely test the talents of your student athletes. Our extensive clubhouse facilities can quite easily accommodate the needs of the competitors, coaches and the CAA Staff.

MERCHANDISE AND INVENTORY OPERATIONS

In 2013, I oversaw the renovation of the Golf Shop, Bag Room, Staff Offices and Storage Spaces. We worked within a budget developing a new floorplan which included fixtures and lighting. While the square footage stayed relatively the same, the height of the ceilings was raised allowing for multi-level display areas. We had to develop a strategic plan for a temporary Golf Shop, Bag Storage and Golf Cart storage in order to limit any inconvenience and to properly service the membership. Within the golf shop, our primary focus is on excellent service while providing a warm and inviting environment. The golf shop carries the latest in the finer men’s and ladies golf fashions along with some every day leisure wear and accessories. The Golf Shop supports sales of over $500,000 annually. 60% of sales are soft goods, 35% equipment and 5% accessories. We pride ourselves on having beautiful clothing and accessories and the latest in golf equipment. We buy clothing in small collections to insure “sell-through” and provide and extensive supply of “demo clubs” to assist in our club fitting. Highlights of our merchandise program are below.

Create a Smart Vendor Structure

• We choose 2-5 "core vendors" and make a statement with those brands but rotate annually to keep inventory fresh and innovative • Take advantage of vendor partner programs that provide extended dating, discounts for early invoice payment and buy back programs for basics or specialty items • Utilize private labeling to take advantage of Club branding and loyalty

Shop Layout and Presentation

• To maximize sales potential, attention is given to the golf shop environment. Merchandise layout, spacing and rotation is critical. As well as music and smells. Fresh flowers grace the shop in Spring, while a warm candle burns soft during the winter with seasonal music.

Staff Training

• Golf Shop staff and Professionals are given beneficial training on sales techniques, understanding the customer and being fully informed on the goods being sold.

INSTRUCTION

I worked closely with our construction crew to build our wonderful Short Game Practice Area and Wedge Range. The short game area has 3 multi-dimensional target greens, 3 bunkers and a large practice putting green. This area is not just used for member practice but also clinics for adults and juniors as well as some social events throughout the season. The teaching philosophy at Wilmington Country Club is custom tailored for each individual golfer. Our experienced team of professionals use the latest in technology to build an individual plan of improvement for each student, and focus on areas that the individual needs to improve their golf game. We work with each student to improve their full swing, short game, golf functional fitness, course and mental performance, as well as club fitting. In addition to group clinics for men and women, we have a significant Junior golf program with instruction from beginner to advanced students. We provide over 130 camps and after school programs to our juniors annually. Some of our instruction highlights include:

Club Fitting

• Full club fitting program utilizing our state-of-the-art facility including TrackMan

and Flight Scope radar technologies enabling the student to leave with a clear

understanding of how and why properly fit clubs are a vital component in improving

their game. A detailed club specification form is given to each student along with

recommendations on set make up and club manufacturer.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT

Mentoring

Learn to Lead Approach One primary factor in team building at Wilmington Country Club is the learn to lead approach. Usually we carry three Assistants on the staff. Often times I am fortunate to get new Assistants who are skilled and have learned a great deal from a previous employer. However, the first year he/she must be willing to listen and learn from senior staff members. This takes patience and humility. Once this Assistant has gained some experience, and a newer Assistant has joined the staff, he/she takes on the middle Assistant role. This very important position means that he/she has learned a great deal about the “Wilmington Country Club way” and is part of the training of the less experienced team member. However, they are still learning the more detailed part of the operation such as accounting, budgeting etc. Finally, when this person becomes the “lead” Assistant, they take on a leadership role among the three Assistants. They have the experience to look ahead and make assignments to the other team members. They understand the strengths of the individuals on the team and are empathetic towards the challenges that each one faces. This person needs to be selfless and understands that reaching team goals is what makes us great. Once this Assistant has learned to lead he/she is ready for a new challenge like their own Head Professional position. During my tenure, I am proud to have mentored six assistants that have gone on to pursue their own Head Golf Professional or Director of Golf positions. All Head Golf Professionals have an obligation to coach and train their Assistants but those who choose to become involved in their growth as a person can truly make a difference in their lives. I have had the good fortune to be honored with the Bill Strausbaugh Award three times in my career. This award is designed to recognize PGA Professionals who by their day to day efforts have distinguished themselves by mentoring their fellow PGA Professionals in improving their employment situations and through service to the community.

Internal Communication

We strive to produce a complete and accurate tournament and event schedule early in the season to allow for ample planning across all departments. We meet on a monthly basis with the communications team to ensure that all golf details are presented in an appropriate and timely manner to the membership. In addition, we also meet with the food and beverage time on a regular basis to plan and execute tournaments and events that exceed our members expectations. Event schedule comparison with other amenities such as racquets is also vital to make sure there isn’t any duplicate event days requiring members to choose between the opportunities and limiting participation. My strong relationship with our Director of Grounds and staff allows for open discussion on playing conditions and course set up in a positive manner. This allows us to think outside the box while always providing the best playing conditions possible.

Committee Communication

Working directly with all golf committees as well as the grounds and executive committee, I strive to create an atmosphere of transparency and open communication. While I work in conjunction with the golf committees with respect to event schedules, it is important to keep the grounds and executive committee abreast of all happenings within the golf department.

Member Communication

It is important to not only communicate accurate and timely information but also interesting and relevant information. We utilize all forms of messaging including traditional print collateral as well as emails, website and social media to promote tournaments, new merchandise, etc. We recognize that our diverse membership receives their information in various ways and do our best to make sure all golf related information is available in their preferred manner.

GOLF COURSE RESTRICTIONS North Course: Normal Play

It appears that we have a bit of a warmer spell upcoming and hopefully it will provide oppor tunity for us to move closer to completion of a couple of projects in progress as well as continue with leaf clean-up and get our winter snow-mold control applied. The project list includes the last par t of sand channel drainage on 6 South for which we only have about twenty lateral lines to complete. With reasonable dr ying this should be able to be accomplished in two or three days. The same holds true for the two bunkers we have been working on, those being holes 17 of both the Nor th (fairway right) and South (green-side right). We have a small amount of grade work to finish before sod is installed to complete the work on 3 Nor th. We will also be continuing with our tree work now limited to the removal of three trees of significant size that are in advanced state of decline and are now a serious hazard, after which Peter will be able to move on to our annual orchard pruning program. We also recently initiated our por tion of the Pub patio expansion project which will eventually include at least two gas operated fire pits. This week we will temporarily remove a por tion of the existing paver bricks to allow installation of the gas and electric lines needed for operating these new features. We will then move on to pit installation and then complete the planned expansion of the patio area overall. Lastly, we continue to flood the recently installed skating rink over in the tennis area. The forecast does not bode well for the formation of ice in the next week to ten days but it also appears that more cold weather will follow and we will hope to have skating conditions soon thereafter.

you need to hit behind the ball just know: 2, 3, 4 inches would be great.Then the club needs to go under the ball and come out of the sand 2, 3, 4 inches in front of where the ball was. We should never be trying to lift the ball out of the sand, only trying to remove the sand from behind and in front of the ball.The ball will ride out with the sand.

A current drill would be to remove the sand from between the lines. We have a variety of sand wedges in the golf shop with different lofts and bounce angles to demo. Stop by today!

CLEAN UP YOUR CONTACT ARTICLE: BOB LENNON The towel on the cart is a very useful tool for keeping your clubs clean, but it can also be used as a great teaching device. Put the towel on the ground and place a golf ball about 2 inches in front of it. Start by making some small swings with a wedge or 9 iron and do not make contact with the towel on the backswing but certainly not on the downswing. If you can learn to hit the ball off the ground and not hit the towel you will be hitting the golf ball with a descending blow and become much more consistent with direction and distance control.

MEN'S OPENING DAY The Men’s Opening Day tournament was held on Friday, April 28th on the South course.We had an impressive 108 players in the field this year, playing a two best-ball of four format.The weather could not have been better, and the scores did not disappoint. Our Wilmington Country Club Junior Golfers had a successful year in the PGA Junior League. Partnering with Bidermann, our team only had one loss throughout the entire season.They played many local courses in the season, travelling to Newark CC, Hartefeld National GC and Bidermann GC. She has finished in second place in the local qualifier at White Clay Creek Country Club, and was recently in first place at the sub-regional qualifier at Applebrook Golf Club.
