(Left page) Shredded Bowl , £600 (Top left) Dented Bow l, £900 (Top right) Ribbon Tealight , £500. *For addition- al details click on the image.

Ane says that her work begins with the simple geometry of bowl forms and flat sheet. She often includes metal wire, which is used to create a three-dimensional line drawing in space. Applying traditional techniques such as hand piercing, drilling and soldering, Ane says she enjoys working in a variety of metals, combining them in an exploration of colour and tex- ture. “My work continues to explore the subjects of illusion and balance,” she explains. “I add a playful element of surprise and unpredictability in the weight, the movement or the tactility of each piece, the result enhances the experience of engaging with my work.”

“I love using oxidised or coat- ed silver, and recycled gold,” explains

Daphne. “Colour is important in my practice and I often use translucent stones in my work.” Daphne says she’s inspired by cities, architecture and art. She looks at photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher, as well as sculptures by Donald Judd, and numerous modern- ist painters. “I grew up in Greece and owe my love of making to my grandfather who was a poet always surrounded by creative and inspiring people .”

Sarah uses traditional techniques to make silver and gold jewellery combining repeated and kinetic elements to create subtle undulating surfaces and patterns in the pieces. “My inspiration comes from many different sources including the rural Oxfordshire environ - ment where I live and work,” she explains. “I enjoy doing commission pieces with clients, often incorporating family treasures and recycling gems and metals to create future heir- looms.” Her fascination with playful movement began when she came across the kinetic makers of the 1960s during her studies. “This fascination endures and I incorporate this additional dimension into most of the pieces I make.”

Robin and Hannah say that much of their work at People Will Always Need Plates references the architecture around us. This set of designs focuses on the work of key architects whose work inspires them. “The creation of Ten by Two marked the 10th anniversary of our collaboration,” they recall. “Eschewing our usual medium of bone china, these vibrant vitreous enamel bowls showcase our love of pure form, flat colour, and the patterns of the built environment.”

Clay is a beautiful substance with which to work, malleable, compliant and sensual. It possesses a will of its own and so the process between maker and clay becomes a conversation, an intimate dialogue. “To completely immerse oneself in making by hand is a very human and an enormously gratifying and valuable experience,” explains Judy. “My latest body of work explores the processes of Nerikomi and Kintsugi. Nerikomi is a technique which involves colouring the clay before it becomes the body of the object.”

Jed is inspired by the use of inexpensive everyday materials to create unique and precious pieces. Borosilicate clear glass tubes, commonly used in science and industry are cut, carved and lamp-worked to form various shapes. “Expe - riencing a spark of an idea, then trying to create it in glass always seems im- possible… until it’s done,” she says. “The transformation from simple clear glass tubes into soft sculptural forms and experimenting with colour, texture and shape is intrinsic to my work.”

Growing up in a tiny fishing village in Taiwan surrounded with a rich heritage of native culture and natural beauty, I-Chun says she became sensitive to vibrant colours and texture at an early age. “I was formally trained in textile artistry in the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design where I was inspired to combine my weaving skills with my creative thoughts to push the boundaries of textile art. Creating intricate paper pieces from repurposed magazines allows me to stay with my traditional textile training in the form of weaving, but to also explore using new materials and methods to create one-of-a-kind work.”

At first glance, you see a beautiful image of a flower, but upon closer examination the story emerges—fragmented pieces of history, staccato words, a familiar font, a sly bit of irony, the symbolism of the bloom. “All the works are drawn from flowers and foliage from the season in which I create them,” explains Kate. “Beatrice’s work is hand embroidered using traditional techniques, but with contemporary designs. The theme of the urban landscape and nature found within the city runs through all her work. “I’m interested in exploring how textiles can be seen as jewellery, despite using non-precious mate- rials, in particular, how embroidery in the past was seen as highly prized and a symbol of wealth. Embroidered areas would be cut off a garment and re-stitched onto a new one. With my work, you can also move a brooch or neck piece from garment to garment.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The only gift is a portion of thyself.” I try to keep that idea front of mind whenever I’m hosting because it can be easy to get caught up in things like the quality of the food, the state of the house, the decoration of the table... all of which matter, of course, but only when the quality of one’s own presence trumps them all.”

The holiday season is also a time to think of giving to organizations that are providing meaningful and life-changing services to others. One of the non-profit organizations that I support is the Newcomer Women’s Services, Toronto (NEW). This agency helps newcomer women and their families settle into their new home in Canada and find mean - ingful employment. They also offer women-only English classes, plus childcare support for mothers learning a new language. Their six-month Sister2Sister leadership program for immigrant women makes a real difference in the lives of these remarkable women. I encourage you to support NEW’s #Project22X22 campaign to raise funds to enrol 22 newcomer women in the Afghan Sister2Sister program.
