PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP WITH COVID-19 RECOVERY WE’RE VACCINATED! We’re happy to share that all of our physical therapists are fully vaccinated against Covid-19!

We want to inform you that the patients recovering from COVID-19 at our clinic are no longer sick or contagious, and we are still taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. If you are experiencing lasting side effects of the virus, contact our clinic to learn more about how our physical therapists can aid in your recovery. How COVID-19 affects muscle strength and the heart COVID-19 causes significant changes in a person’s levels of strength and can render them unable to leave their bed for long periods of time. This poses the threat of developing muscle atrophy. According to UT Southwestern Medical Center, “healthy people can lose approximately 1% to 1.5% of muscle strength per day with bedrest. The average hospital stay for COVID-19 is eight days. In just over a week, a patient could lose 12% of their muscle strength.”

Research at Hackensack Meridian Health has also revealed the ways COVID-19 affects the heart as well. A 2020 study shows “a considerable majority of patients [...] were found to have had inflammation in the heart and muscle lining. This can be troubling as inflammation in the heart can lead to long-lasting cardiac disease and failure.” How can therapy help with recovery? Some common physical conditions we are seeing in people recovering from COVID19:

• • • •

Difficulties with swallowing

• • • • •

Difficulty walking

Memory problems

Shortness of breath

Difficulty with word-finding

Weakness

Cognitive changes

Fatigue

Decreased balance

S P O T L I G H T O N : CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT What is a concussion? A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that can alter the way the brain functions. Concussions can occur from direct or indirect impact to the skull or brain. What is the most common misconception about concussions? A big misconception is that a concussion only occurs as a result of a direct blow to the head. Something like a car crash or a football tackle. In reality, a concussion may be caused by a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or elsewhere on the body if the force of the impact is transmitted to the head. It’s important for athletes, parents and coaches to understand that multiple small impacts can cause one to occur. When athletes and parents understand that a concussion can begin from multiple smaller impacts, they start taking note of those during games and practices which helps with early recognition. Why is it so important to have a program specific to concussion management? A concussion is a bruise on your brain. It affects a person’s performance in any environment. Our programaddresses both these areas andmonitors the patient’s symptoms so that they are not returning to either before their brain can handle it. How can a physical therapist help? Physical therapists can evaluate and treat many problems related to concussion. Because no 2 concussions are the same, a physical therapist will examine your neurological, orthopedic, and cardiovascular systems in order to best prescribe a routine to address your particular symptoms and your needs in all of your daily environments.

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup quick oats • 1/2 cup peanut butter • 1 Tbsp. ground flax seed

• 2 Tbsp. wheat germ • 1/3 cup honey • 1/2 mini chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS Mix all the ingredients together either in a mixing bowl with a spoon or a Kitchen-Aid mixer with paddle attachment. Place mixture in refrigerator for about 15 minutes, or until chilled enough to roll into balls without being too sticky. When chilled and not as sticky, roll into balls and place on a piece of parchment paper on a plate and place in refrigerator, until set. Can now place balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator and eat at your leisure. Enjoy!
