Not Just for the Irish

LOOK FOR THE LUCK IN YOUR LIFE THIS ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Unless it’s a rare year when Easter falls on a Sunday in late March, the biggest holiday this month far and away is St. Patrick’s Day. You might be surprised to learn that while the celebration of Irish culture and history started in Ireland, it didn’t become popular there. The Irish people spread across the globe, bringing their music, literature, spirits, and food with them. And it was this group of people — the “Irish diaspora” in America, Canada, Australia, and other places — that really made St. Patrick’s Day popular. One of the cultural traditions

all the people that could have been born into your life, you were the one who got that chance and are a miracle. And every year after that, we just get luckier and luckier. It takes luck to survive, after all. Even though we all suffer misfortunes, loss, and even death, we still can look around at the world and see the role that luck plays in it. Luck is everywhere, really, and we do ourselves a favor when we start to look at the world that way. In fact, that’s a trait that I’ve found is common in successful people, no

pressed their advantage every time a lucky break came their way, which is something the first group does well. Be that as it may, the folks who look at life and find its silver linings tend to be pretty content, at least in my experience. They feel lucky to be here, and who’s to argue with them when they can always point out the good things in their lives? As you might guess, it’s a trait I try to emulate myself. And it hasn’t been easy. For most of the country, March is the one-year anniversary of going into lockdown for the first time, and the 12 months since have been nothing like what anyone alive has ever experienced. All of us have suffered loss, and many have had challenges to their health, as well. I sometimes catch myself wishing that things would just go back to “normal,” as if that were even possible anymore. But then I look out the window and see the first signs of spring, and I realize that I’m lucky enough to witness this beautiful time of year once again. Or I get a text from a loved one, and I smile at how lucky I must be with such wonderful people in my life. I encourage all of my readers to take time this month, especially on St. Patrick’s Day, to really focus on the lucky.

that followed the Irish (and their descendants) was a reputation for being particularly lucky. As a result, St. Patrick’s Day is also considered lucky — a good day to buy a lottery ticket, for example, or attempt a difficult endeavor.

matter what field or career path they’re in. When I talk to clients after a

lifetime of working in an industry, I find that the ones

who were most successful were

the ones who could look at any situation and find the lucky opportunity it presented

But when I think about luck, I can’t help but feel it’s appropriate that the people who made St. Patrick’s Day popular weren’t so much Irish as a large group of people with Irish ancestors — because luck is truly for everyone. It starts with birth: The odds of being born at all are staggeringly against us, right? GB AND MATTHEW The Famous Grandmother and Grandson Duo

Matthew Stewart lives in Florida and spends most of his time with GB, Grandma Bobbe. His Instagram is full of photos and videos of himself and his family as well as all the adventures, jokes, and sweet moments he shares with GB. One of the first videos Matthew shared on social media was a light argument about whether or not he should accept gas money from GB. Afterward, the pair quickly rose in popularity, but they became truly famous after uploading a particular video in late 2020. Before quarantines were put in place, GB would visit her beauty salon once a week to get her hair touched up. Knowing that his grandmother was down about not being able to go, he decided to bring the spa to her. Matthew washed, dried, and styled her hair for her, with a mimosa to top the experience off. This touching

video reached thousands of people and prompted guest appearances for GB and Matthew on “Access Daily,” “Now This,” “Fox & Friends,” and “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” The antics of these two brought such joy across the nation that GB receives a large number of packages and letters regularly. Each video shows GB near tears, overwhelmed by the amount of love and support from her over 173,000 Instagram followers and 2.9 million TikTok followers. In a video uploaded just before Christmas, GB received a wonderful gift from Affordable Dentures & Implants ORL: a brand-new set of dentures. Now she can continue making videos with her beloved grandson with a “beautimus” smile.

Watching grandparents become part of the social media community is so heartwarming. Through videos with their children and grandchildren, the wholesome content they create is bound to make any viewer smile — and they can’t help but smile too! One such grandma, a TikTok and Instagram star, is smiling with a brand-new set of dentures in a video captioned, “They gave GB a piece of her youth back.”

Female Titans of Finance The History of Finance Includes Many Women

March is International Women’s History Month, but there’s a perception that the history of finance is masculine. True, many of the people in this industry have been male — a trend that continues today — but the importance of women to the field cannot be understated. We wanted to highlight just a few of these notable women. Many careers have been launched on the lowest rungs of the New York Stock Exchange, and that was certainly the case for Stacey Cunningham , “the girl” (as her colleagues referred to her) who began as an intern in 1994 and progressed through being a clerk on the trading floor. But few careers have soared as high as hers: Cunningham became the NYSE’s COO in 2015 and, in 2018, was elected to be its first female president!

Ostrom, who passed away in 2012, was another lady luminary in the field and a brilliant one at that. She is best known for winning the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2009 — the only woman to do so. Her winning research debunked a long-held belief that communities sharing natural resources will destroy such resources over time. In fact, Ostrom showed, many communities often work to preserve resources. Cunningham and Ostrom continued a tradition of women in finance stretching back to Abigail Adams , wife of Founding Father John Adams. From managing finances to shoring up investments, Abigail was a prudent investor with money to spend. She was also keen on women having the right to property, which was a central question in America’s early days. When she died, her money and property went mostly to women as the result of an expertly crafted will!

There’s little doubt that Abigail Adams would have liked “The Witch of Wall Street” Henrietta Green . Born in the decades after Adams’ death, Green came from money, and she knew what to do with it. Her love of investing and finance cemented her reputation as one of the country’s first value investors, and she didn’t shy away from being seen as a miser to amass a fortune. If you’re interested in this subject — and in women like Dambisa Moyo, Edith Abbott, and Mary Paley Marshall — please contact Wolf Retirement Navigation today. Whether you want more information on women in finance or just want to talk about your own financial situation, we are here to talk with you.

The only downside, some said, was that Elinor Ostrom wasn’t alive to see it.

SUDOKU

In lieu of corned beef this year, try this spin on authentic English pasties — savory pockets of pastry dough stuffed with seasoned ground beef.

INGREDIENTS

• • • •

3/4 lb ground beef

• • •

1 tsp dried parsley

1 medium onion, diced

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced 2 sheets store-bought puff pastry dough

1/4 cup beef broth (as needed)

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat your oven to 400 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In a large bowl, combine the beef, onion, and potatoes. 3. Roll out the pastry dough into roughly 10-inch circles or squares. 4. Spoon 1/2 of the beef mixture onto each sheet of dough, then top the mixture with parsley, salt, and pepper. 5. Fold the edges of the dough over the filling, pinching each pasty shut and tucking in both ends.

6. Transfer the pasties to the prepared baking sheet, then cut several small slits in each pasty for ventilation. Bake for 45 minutes. 7. Remove the pasties from the oven and reduce the heat to 350 F. Spoon 1 tsp beef broth into each slit, then bake for an additional 15 minutes.

3 Irish Travel Destinations for Your Bucket List

Don’t Miss These Historic Spots!

Traveling to Ireland might not be an option for you right now, but like a leprechaun hoarding gold, you can still fill up your bucket list with all of the pubs, rolling hills, and lucky sites you’d love to see. This month when you’re planning your trip to Dublin, Galway, or Cork, add these spots to your itinerary. When Sean’s Bar closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire country of Ireland groaned. The pub is famous for its Irish whiskey, music, and history, which stretches back to 900 A.D., far enough to earn it the title of “Oldest Bar in the World.” As of this writing, Sean’s is slated to reopen when it’s safe again, and considering it has already survived the The Oldest Bar in the World – Athlone, County Westmeath

bubonic plague and the Spanish flu, odds are good that it will make it through this, too! Soon, you’ll be able to raise a glass in the same rooms where the noblemen of nearby Athlone Castle shared drinks in the 12th century. Find more historical tidbits at SeansBar.ie. If you’re a fan of thrillers and true crime podcasts, you won’t want to leave Ireland without visiting Leap Castle. This 16th- century haunt was built by the fierce O’Bannon clan, who famously ordered two brothers to throw themselves off a rocky cliff as a test of strength. The survivor was named clan chief, and later Leap Castle was built on that very site — beginning its long and bloody history. Ireland’s Spookiest Castle – Coolderry, County Offaly

Read more about its haunted priest’s house, murder hole room, and bloody chapel at LeapCastle.net and meet the many ghosts that haunt its halls. A Famous Smugglers’ Shortcut – Newcastle, County Down Get ready to tie up your hiking boots! This roughly 2-mile hike, called Hare’s Gap, is one of the most famous and beautiful routes in Ireland. When you climb through this pass in the Mourne Mountains, you’ll be rewarded with views of glacial cliffs, boulder fields, and ancient-looking stone walls. Legend has it that the pass was part of the Brandy Pad smuggling route, used to ferry goods like soap, leather, spices, and coffee.

Safe travels, and ádh mór (good luck)!
