LOOKING AHEAD TO MY NEXT GOAL (AND WHY YOU SHOULD BE TOO)

actual mountain — and I couldn’t have been as successful as I was without him. Just as August marks the end of summer, this is the culmination of a particular goal I envisioned. However, that doesn’t mean this is the end of my journey. Our goals can be ever-changing, fluctuating as our lives do in a way that allows us to grow, with mile markers of achievements along the way charting our successes. Our goals should continually shift as our lives do. Whether we set these for our health, relationships, careers, retirement, financial situation, or travel, we shouldn’t become pigeon-holed into one goal, nor should we mark the end of one challenge at the end of that particular goal. Just as our life evolves, like with the death of a loved one or the birth of a new family member, so can our goals; and as those adapt, so should the steps we take to get there. Small tweaks to our investments or allocations (to account for inflation or taxes) can be powerful enough to re-imagine our financial plans for our new goals or dreams. And just as I had a coach helping me reach my personal summits, you need a coach to help you “top” your mountain, Consult your financial professional before making any investment decision. This summer, I asked the community to support me as I faced one of the toughest physical and mental challenges of my life. And you showed up in a big way! It was your kind words, your encouragement, and the wonderful generosity you showed toward JaxPAL that motivated me on my two Everest climbs in Idaho and Utah this summer. During my journey, I felt immense gratitude, but it wasn’t only because I had reached my destination (that did feel pretty great, though)! I felt thankful for each person who had supported me along the way, and I was proud of the obstacles I had faced and conquered to get there. This journey, including the tireless preparation, was just as great of a reward as the actual hikes I accomplished. I fought to reach this point; and because of your support, we can help create a positive environment for children in at-risk communities. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that I also had a great coach through the 29029 organization that hosted the hikes, helping me along the way. He designed a training program that helped me map out hydration and nutrition for such a long- distance hike. It takes a lot of endurance and stamina to complete a climb up Everest — even when you’re not on the Investment Advisory Services offered through Coyle Capital, LLC, a Registered Investment Advisor. re-imagine your goals, and create a path to get you there. This is someone who can help you plan for and navigate your risks in retirement, creating safety nets that account for saving too little, market volatility, and health care. Furthermore, that basis of support and reassurance can help you summit the mountain in ways you can’t imagine. Take it from someone who has felt a tremendous amount of support lately for his own goals: You need a network and coaches behind you! It won’t always be easy when you’re working toward a goal, but the result will always be worth it. As your life and goals change with the seasons, I hope you’ll know that we’re here to offer the coaching and support you need.

STAY SHARP AS YOU AGE By Going Back to School

While you may be happy for the years of wisdom you’ve gained since being in your 20s and 30s, you might be missing the mental sharpness you once had. Why not have the best of both worlds? Scientists have found that the human brain changes with age — neurons fire more slowly, for example, and short-term memory recall can be more challenging — but that we often underestimate our capacity to continue learning as we grow older. Negative stereotypes about aging can reinforce these beliefs. However, new research is showing that older adults who’ve committed to immersive study of a new subject show brain function akin to someone 30 years younger. This goes beyond the tired advice to do a crossword puzzle or work a sudoku puzzle every day. The participants in this research study were learning entirely new-to-them subjects, like how to speak a foreign language, use a new piece of technology, or make art. Convinced of the benefits but not sure where to turn to learn? Try these two sources.

Most colleges are designed with the traditional, 20-something college student in mind, which may not appeal or be a great fit for adults in their 50s, 60s, and beyond. But many universities are starting to cater to an older crowd with lifelong learning programs. One example is the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Washington (UW). UW’s program offers a full course schedule on subjects in the arts, sciences, and current events taught by qualified faculty and provided at an affordable rate. There are over 100 such programs at universities across the U.S. Have a longtime dream to write children’s books? UC San Diego Extension has a certificate program for that! If you’re looking to dive into a single subject or perhaps you’d like to continue working in retirement or shift gears later in your career, certificate programs are a great option. No previous education is required. Most certificate programs are open to all, typically run for less than a year, and easily accommodate part-time learners.

Celebrate your years of hard-earned wisdom but commit to keeping your brain young by going back to school this fall.

YOU’RE INVITED!

Our client appreciation celebration party will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, from 6–9 p.m. on the rooftop of Intuition Ale Works, 929 East Bay Street (Downtown Jacksonville, next to the TIAA Bank Field and overlooking the spectacular St. Johns River). Please join us for a night of delicious food, locally brewed beer, wine, and nonalcoholic beverages, all while getting to know other members of the community and clients of Wolf Retirement Navigation. We invite you to bring a guest along to enjoy and share in the evening festivities too! That evening, we’ll present the leaders at JaxPAL with a BIG check from the fundraiser that was made possible by you! We also will be recognizing and congratulating Adam Wolf on his two fabulous “29029 Everesting” endurance mountain hikes through Idaho and Utah — a huge and epic feat! So, come on out and help us celebrate JaxPAL and congratulate Adam. It will be a night to remember, and we look forward to welcoming you and sharing a spectacular celebratory evening together! See you there! Invitations to follow.

We appreciate you! We have something very exciting planned for our amazing clients to show our heartfelt gratitude for the recent generous donations to JaxPAL, the Police Athletic League of Jacksonville. Wolf Retirement Navigation is a huge supporter of the program. JaxPAL builds positive relationships between law enforcement and the youth of the community. It is an integral part of our community as it focuses on education, athletics, leadership, and outreach programs and acts as a safe haven from the harsh realities of everyday crime in today’s world. Via its programs, relationships are built and maintained all year long, and there is always a way to get involved. In the past, Wolf Retirement Navigation sponsored one of JaxPAL’s four centers for the holidays and continues to volunteer and mentor the children. Community support is key for mutual trust between law enforcement and the community they serve.

‘Ouch, My Feet!’

The Right Way to Break In New Shoes

the afternoon. Then, if your feet still feel good, increase the time frame until you’re comfortable wearing them all day.

If you love to run, hike, or take long walks, then you’re probably familiar with the “new shoe dilemma.” It happens in your head and goes something like this: “I really need new shoes; my old ones are falling apart!” “Are you sure? They’re expensive.” “I’m sure.” “But what about the break-in period? It hurts! You can wait another month, right?”

2. Rotate your footwear. A 2013 sports medicine study found that runners who rotate between two pairs of shoes can lower their risk of running-related injuries by 39%. After your new shoes have made it through the “slow start” process, consider keeping your old ones in rotation for a few more weeks so you’ll be less likely to hurt yourself. 3. Listen to your body. Having proper footwear is crucial to the health of your feet, knees, hips, and lower back (your weight distribution starts in your feet, after all!), so pay attention to how those areas feel during the break-in process. Are you still walking differently after a day or two in your new shoes? Does a part of your body ache that didn’t before? That’s more than the break-in blues! Your new footwear could do long-term damage to your body, so invest in a new pair or visit a podiatrist or physical therapist for help. Want to learn more about the fickle relationship between humans and shoes? Check out “These Shoes Are Killing Me!” an episode of the “Freakonomics Radio” podcast that aired May 19, 2017.

The break-in period is the uncomfortable 2–3-week period when your shoes feel

new or stiff and don’t fit quite right. You might even end up with sore feet or a blister. Unfortunately, it’s crucial that you suffer through this rough patch to ensure you’re not stuck with falling- apart, unsupportive shoes. Here are three ways to make the process less painful. 1. Start slow. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, you should break in new shoes over the course of a few days. Start with one hour in the morning and one in
