SAG HARBOR SUMMER HOME BEACH-INSPIRED: This sprawling Sag Harbor residence was a gut renovation, full of potential but very dated. The coastal location in New York was a major factor in the B Interior team’s design process. In designing a summer house, they used lots of natural materials and light colors in comparison to what they curate for more urban, edgy city apartment designs.

The B Interior team uses flooring to create a backdrop for every other element in the home and set the tone for the beachy style of the house. Slightly darker, rustic flooring created depth and “seriousness” to this space. Elsen, from our Henley collection, is a beautiful textured floor that was chosen for this project to bring beachy characteristics into the house and add an organize material into play.

Minimalism is a powerful design theme throughout B Interior’s portfolio. They specialize in residential design that is simple, uncluttered, where the architectural features and materials are the focal points. Key elements the team keep in mind are clean lines and functionality. The color palette and other finishes chosen for this residence are modern and clean, but still warm and inviting.

COUNTRY MEETS MODERN: Q+A WITH TIMOTHY SUMMERS BAILEY

THE MODERN FARMHOUSE How do you balance modern and rustic so elegantly? I have an architectural background, so “modern” is always part of my design language- even when I’m designing transitional projects. For this project, my use of color and sleek detailing kept it fresh yet inviting. I liked mixing character grade woods with modern wallpaper and furnishings. I also added modern touches with the use of simple hardware juxtaposed against the barn doors, for example. This home is actually a farmhouse, so I needed to acknowledge the rustic aspect, but not go into the saccharine side of farmhouse design, like when people put those kitschy signs everywhere.

What’s your go-to source for design inspiration? Travel. Going to restaurants and hotels are inspiring to me - even for my residential projects. I’m fortunate to live in an area with a glut of 200+ year old taverns and inns where I can draw endless inspiration from. Physically experiencing a space or seeing an object in person is so much more inspiring for me than picking up a magazine or scrolling on my phone. How does flooring play an important role in the design of the space? Flooring really does set the tone and backdrop for any design. For me, there really is no hierarchy of importance - every surface plays a role in contributing to the success of a design.

You have so many wonderful textures in this home, why are they important to the design? Because this is a relatively small space with no windows, adding a mix of materials (wood, stone, wallpaper, tile) was critical to ensure a visually interesting space. No paint color in the world is going to transform a dark, detail-less room. I knew I needed to create an environment rich in texture and color. Rhyl’s color was perfect for creating a rich and warm place for my client’s to relax and unwind. Eurus on the walls added visual interest, texture, and a nice counterpart to the Rhyl wood floors and the other materials in the design.

WOOD FLOORING GRADES

PRIME GRADE Few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size. There will only be a relatively small amount of color variation in the wood itself.

SELECT/CLASSIC GRADE Typically this will have a mix of almost prime boards with other planks which have some knots. Some color variation in the wood should be expected.

Part of the beauty of real wood is that each and every plank is unique. At Havwoods, we categorize all of our flooring into 5 different wood grades.

CHARACTER GRADE Knots are larger and you should expect cracks across the growth ring. Filler will be used, the color of which is carefully selected to complement the wood.

RUSTIC GRADE A limitless size and number of knots. There will be color variation, plus plenty of other visible characteristics.

FINISHING TECHNIQUES AND CHARACTERISTICS TO CREATE THE OUTSTANDING FINISHES WE OFFER, THE WOOD GOES THROUGH VARIOUS PROCESSES WHICH AFFECTS DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOOD IN DIFFERENT WAYS. SOMETIMES COLORED OILS ARE ADDED TO PRODUCE AN EVEN MORE INDIVIDUAL APPEARANCE.

SAPWOOD

Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in color than the heartwood and certain fuming, smoking and coloring processes emphasise the sapwood since it doesn’t react to such treatments to the same degree. (The effect of these treatments on planks containing sapwood is shown left.) By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoods’ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF WOOD ARE PURELY NATURAL AND THESE ARE EXPLAINED BELOW.

KNOTS & FILLERS

A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colors: white, grey, brown and black are shown here.

MEDULLARY RAYS, CHECKS & SHAKES

These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.

SMOKING AND FIRING GRADES

Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the hardwood is exposed to ammonia gas for 24 (single) or 48 (double) hours. The coloration is surface deep only. Unlike staining, smoking reacts to the chemical composition of the individual plank, so the ultimate shade will vary. This variation is considered an asset, however if you prefer a more even tone we suggest you consider choosing stained rather than smoked wood. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark color runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.

PATTERNS THERE ARE VARIOUS DIFFERENT TYPES OF DESIGNS OR PATTERNS AVAILABLE. STANDARD PLANK IS THE MOST COMMON STYLE BUT YOU MAY DECIDE ON SOMETHING MORE INTERESTING LIKE A BLOCK OR HERRINGBONE.

HERRINGBONE Solid blocks and larger engineered wood blocks means you can create many different sizes in this pattern. Herringbone blocks may be laid in single or double patterns, or if they are the correct proportion you will be able to produce patterns called ‘Tumbling Dice’ ‘Basket weave’ and ‘Ladder’ patterns.

This is sometimes known as plank, strip or boards and is available in many different lengths and widths.

LACQUERED This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden oor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic.

OILED Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the oor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled oors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage.

UV CURED HARDWAX OIL Combining the wear advantages of a lacquer

with the subtlety of oil, this nish is micro-porous, water- repellent, dirt-, wear-, and stain-resistant against wine, beer, cola, coffee, tea, fruit juices and milk. It will not crack, ake, peel or blister.

Sourcing materials from sustainably responsible sources has never been as

ethical trading. We know that deforestation is having a huge impact on the environment – global warming, soil erosion, the loss of habitat for plants and animals, and the destruction of local populations and the water cycle, to name but a few factors. Helping local populations to preserve their forests is the task of international non-profit organisations like the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®). Another international organisation that you will find references to in our brochure is the PEFC, which stands for Program of the Endorsement of Forest Certification. Their focus is to ensure that certification is accessible even to small and family owned forests. Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute addresses issues from a different angle; educating and empowering manufacturers to become a positive force for society and the environment.

THE ITALIAN COLLECTION The majority of the Italian Collection floors are available in plank, herringbone block and chevron patterns. Narrower in form and offering a thinner composition, their size offers the flexibility to create more complex flooring patterns. Combine various wood flooring designs together for a mix-and-match look, or complement with tiles in porcelain, ceramic or glass for a trend-led finish. All boards feature a traditional tongue and groove profile, and are surfaced with a lacquer or oiled finish. The majority of the collection includes FSC Certified timber (FSC-C009500).
