Job Context
Queen Mary University of London is one of the UK’s leading research universities, committed to improving social justice and achieving the previously unthinkable. The Marketing and Communications Directorate is responsible for raising the awareness and reputation of Queen Mary among its target audiences, and for increasing the quality and quantity of Queen Mary applicants. This role sits within the Communications team with a dotted line into the Principal’s Office.
Job Purpose
Working with the Head of Events and Ceremonies (the functional leader for events across the University) and the Head of the Principal’s Office, this role is responsible specifically for working with the Senior Exec- utive Team (SET) (qmul.ac.uk/about/whoswho/) on the development and delivery of high-value events led by SET members. The role holder will utilise skills in leadership, negotiation and organisation to successfully develop and deliver a series of compelling and successful events, including dinners, public lectures, confer- ences and VIP visits.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Insight
• Identify a role for events in supporting the strategic needs and priorities outlined by the Senior Executive Team, and translate this into measurable objectives.
• Provide sound and relevant events to colleagues and senior managers within the Principal’s Office.
• Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, advocates and partners to gather intelligence and build an effective environment for the delivery of successful events. • Understand the events landscape and emerging trends, and apply this knowledge to develop approaches to future events.
Ideas
• Lead the development, implementation and review of an effective programme of events for the Senior Executive Team, ensuring input from all relevant stakeholders. • Use your knowledge of the policy and events landscapes to develop innovative ideas in support of this programme. • Help ensure the organisational infrastructure is in place to deliver high-quality and creative strategic events for the Senior Executive Team.
Implementation
• Effectively manage relationships with the most senior stakeholders both within and outside of the university. • Demonstrate excellent aural and written communications skills and help set the standards for the team.
• Lead the development and delivery of a programme of events required by the Senior Executive Team.
• Display clear, authoritative and sensitive leadership in the development and delivery of events.
Impact
• Lead the identification of evaluation criteria for the programme of events led by the role.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of events activities against objectives, learning lessons and comparing with industry best practice to support the improvement of future strategies.
Other duties and responsibilities
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of budget management and the importance of value for money in events delivery, and ensure suppliers are delivering quality work.
• Support the delivery of Queen Mary’s major external events, including Graduations and Open Days.
• This may require out of hours working for which your time will be compensated as per your contract.
• Act as an ambassador for the University’s brand (both verbal and visual identity), championing its use across the institution as well as your own area of work.
