We hope 2021 proves to be an exciting year. Not only do we an- ticipate the pandemic will subside and life will return to some normalcy, but we will also be celebrating our 100th anniversary. In the first half of the year, we will main - tain our virtual luncheon series and out- door social events. Be on the lookout for the Spring Sporting Clays Tournament on March 26th. In the second half of the year, we hope to get some instructors back for in-person continuing education courses. Finally, I would like to invite you to con- sider donating some of your time to the Society in 2021. The success and growth of our Society relies on individuals, like you, who donate their time and talents. We have several events that need volun- teer support and committees that could benefit from new ideas. Please consider getting involved by volunteering at an event or participating on a committee. I can’t think of a better way to grow your professional network and to give back to the geoscience community. Welcome to 2021 I would like to welcome everyone to a new year. A year ago, we were anticipat- ing oil prices to increase, the economy to grow, and we hadn’t heard of COVID-19. As you know, 2020 turned out to be a very different year. People are looking to move beyond the pandemic, and I don’t believe I have ever felt the spirit of hope and re- newal so alive and prevalent in the new year. This same spirit is alive in the Soci- ety. We have several new board members who are excited about growing our mis- sion to provide quality continuing educa- tion and networking opportunities. In the January Board meeting, we finalized offi - cer elections and committee chairs. Here is a summary of our current board: Officers 1. Drew Dressler – Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair 2. Lesley Evans – Councilor and Governance Committee Chair 3. Cole Hinds – Secretary and Scholarship Committee Chair 4. James van Alstine – Vice President and Publication Committee 5. our rocks in Oklahoma, my very first pub - lication was my master's thesis here in the Shale Shaker and was a look into paleo- karst sinkholes in the Viola Limestone in the Arkoma Basin. I am looking forward to getting back in touch with Oklahoma geology with this role and to increase my participation within the OCGS. James: For those that do not know me yet, I started my Oil & Gas career as a geophysicist first with Schlumberger down in Houston in their software di- vision (2001-2006) and then later with Chesapeake Energy (2006-2020) where I had the incredible opportunity to develop extensive basin-scale to prospect-level structural and stratigraphic interpreta- tions across most all of North America. I worked in great detail in the Appalachian Basin, the Gulf Coast trends and all of the Mid-Continent basins, and translated those interpretations into successful drill- ing opportunities. Now, since the start of the new year, I am looking to build upon the skills that I learned through all those exploration and mapping efforts through my own consulting company, VanAlstine Geosciences. I am honored to be given the opportunity to help on the Shale Shak- er, to be able to work more closely with our Oklahoma City geoscience communi- ty and to hear your thoughts and ideas on Oklahoma Geology and beyond. Thank you. I look forward to talking with you more in the coming months. Mike & James

Thanks and Introductions This issue marks the beginning of a new team for the Shale Shaker with James and I taking over the Editorial reins from Dan Costello. It is an honor to be given this task and we will do our best to maintain the same high level of quality and detail for the upcoming volumes as you have come to expect from the work that Dan has provided in the past. Dan’s work on the Shale Shaker as Editor was exemplary and we want to take this opportunity to say thank you to him for all of the time and effort he put into each and every volume. He set a high bar for us to reach going for- ward, but we are confident we can do so and we look forward to working with you, our peers and colleagues, to help continue this important tradition of providing great educational and entertaining articles in the months to come. Since your thoughts and

contributions are at the heart of the Shale Shaker, we ask that if you have articles or ideas that you would like to contribute and see published to please contact us and send them our way. ([email protected] & [email protected]) A little about us Mike: I started my career at Devon En- ergy (2015-2020) where I was fortunate to work in the Delaware Basin and then the Powder River Basin. During this time, I was able to be a part of active drilling programs and asset management. I feel fortunate I was able to be close to the drill bit and get to drill some of my own picked locations for Devon. Being able to create your maps and to deploy capital to prove your geologic concepts is what makes this profession exciting and rewarding. While my professional career hasn’t dealt with

TECHNICAL MEETING FEBRUARY 17 , 2021 12:00-1:00pm Dr. ANDREW CULLEN Warwick Investment Group

“Visualizing Risk to Reduce Bias and Improve Decision Making: My Favorite Diagrams” THE MEETING WILL BE A VIRTUAL MEETING/WEBINAR LINK TO REGISTER: https://app.livestorm.co/oklahoma-city-geological-society-1/february-technical-luncheon-dr-andrew-cullen ABSTRACT: All businesses and individuals make countless decisions daily. The oil and gas business is no exception. We often decide swiftly, barely aware of making these decisions because our intuitive minds fill in knowledge gaps to construct a coherent narrative aligned with prior experiences, a form of the confirmational bias heuristic; the Past is the Key to the Present is the converse of the Doctrine of Uniformitarianism. While this heuristic can ease the burden of overthinking a decision, it leads to bias in decision making that is commonly compounded by the affect heuristic that introduces motivational bias to favor one’s own projects, e.g. , propose a downspacing in Oklahoma, build leasehold the Williston Basin, join a wildcat in the GOM, expand pipeline capacity in Texas, sell assets in Ohio, or buy a stake in a Nebraska wind farm. When deciding which projects to fund and how capital will be apportioned between them, it is imperative that decision makers trust that each project has been evaluated with a consistent methodology and that the projects selected represent an unbiased portfolio. This talk reviews some of the heuristics and traps that can cloud decision making and then presents three diagrams that enable visualization of the assessment of risk & uncertainty. These tools can help reduce the frequency and magnitude of poor decisions by reducing bias and helping communicate the degree of uncertainty. My favorite three diagrams are 1) the Maastricht Template (Shell), 2) the Fourfold Pattern (Kahneman & Tversky), and 3) the Truth-Lie-Ignorance Ternary (Cullen) . The utility of these diagrams will be examined using examples of equity determinations, bid round valuations, brokered sales packages, and reserves write-downs . These tools can be used far beyond the oil and gas business . Whether buying a house, selling stocks, or funding research projects, sustained success favors those who make decisions with an unbiased balanced vision. BIO: Andrew is the Senior Vice President of Geology at Warwick Investments Group, a position held for six years.
