Find Time

for Family This Summer

This month marks the true start of summer, and it’s going to be a beautiful — and hot — season here in town. The kids are on break, and that means we’ll be busy here at Shullman Orthodontics until school starts again in a few months. It also means that, just like many of you, I have my own kids at home this summer. That can be bittersweet, as I love having them around, but it seems like I never get to spend as much time with them as I’d like. Like I said, summer is a busy time for me. And although school is out, it’s a busy time for them as well, with a wide variety of camps broadening their horizons or building on long-standing interests. All year, the kids look forward to circus, art, gymnastics, and, of course, dance camps. These experiences are sort of like school, but with only the fun parts.

Again, though, this doesn’t make it any easier to spend time with my kids. A while back, someone recommended that I take a one-on-one trip with each child at least once a year, and we try to do just that with our daughters. It doesn’t have to be much — an overnight baseball game or a camping trip are good examples — but you have to build individual relationships with each of your kids. My oldest is 12 years old, and I know that her time in the house with us will end almost as fast as this summer does. It’s true that we’ll be buying school supplies soon; but it’s also true that in a few short years, she’ll be driving, and then she’ll be off on her own. That’s why it’s so important for me to spend time with her and her sisters now. We’re also looking forward to time away as a whole family to regroup and recharge. That’s why we’re all taking a cruise next month. I’ll be sure to write about that in a future edition of the

newsletter. And my wife and I are headed out of town for a few days this summer, as well. We’re going to see some friends, do a little hiking, and explore some new sights. Again, it’s not a big trip, but this time of year, we’ll take what we can get! Other than that, you can expect to find me and my staff in the practice. We’ll see patients all day long, in every available chair, until things slow down a little this fall. If you’d like to get your child in, or get in yourself, it’s best to call soon and schedule it out. Have a great June, – Dr. Howard Shullman P.S. While you’re looking at your schedule, pick a day this summer to spend with each of your children individually. I promise, it’s absolutely worth your time. www.ShullmanOrtho.com • 561.868.5050 • 1

Summer Reading for Busy Families

Audiobooks Inspire a Love of Stories in All Ages

Summer reading lists are always popular, but most families rarely have time to have dinner together, let alone sit still reading for hours. Luckily, the ever-growing popularity of audiobooks means you don’t have to wait for school to start again for your kids to get back into literature. Here are a few great audiobooks you can introduce to your family this summer. For the Long Road Trip “The Bad Beginning” (A Series of Unfortunate Events) by Lemony Snicket, read by Tim Curry When a terrible fire destroys the Baudelaire mansion, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny find themselves orphans and are sent to live with the terrible Count Olaf. Convinced their awful new guardian is only after their fortune, the Baudelaires must use their intelligence and skills

For Something Entirely New “The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown, read by Kate Atwater When lonely robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she finds she’s trapped on a wild island. Struggling to survive and befriend the island’s hostile animal inhabitants, Roz must eventually face her mysterious past, which threatens to tear her home apart. This brand-new book is a stunning tale about the environment, technology, and the wonder of being alive. These are just a few of the many titles your family can enjoy this summer. to stick together and (maybe) overcome their sad circumstances. Fans of the Netflix series will love to hear the story that started it all! Who knew such an unfortunate series could mean fun for the whole family? For Family Bonding “Half Magic” by Edward Eager, read by Words Take Wing A beloved family favorite since it was first published in 1954, “Half Magic” tells the story of siblings Jane, Mark, Katharine, and Martha, who discover a magic wish-granting coin. They soon realize the coin only grants half of what they wish for, and an unplanned vacation to the Sahara, followed by chaos in King Arthur’s court, is just a one of the hilarious misadventures this family must overcome together.

The Dangers of DIY Braces

Le ve It to a Professional muscle spasms, jaw joint issues, and shooting pain. In the end, you can cause permanent damage to your bones and gums, and your

The numbers are so alarming that the organization has reissued a public service announcement warning of the danger. For most people, the appeal of DIY braces stems from a desire for results at a fraction of the cost. The allure of a cheap, quick fix for bad teeth is compelling. However, orthodontists compare DIY braces to playing Russian roulette with your teeth. Going the cheap route can cause serious infection and damage to the teeth and gums, which could end up costing significantly more than traditional braces in the long run. When you use DIY braces, you can move your teeth too quickly and along the wrong paths, which can cause the root to dissolve. You also run the risk of creating clenching problems,

In the past few years, do-it-yourself (DIY) projects have become increasingly popular. They can range from home improvement projects to homemade beauty supplies, but the newest trend in DIY projects has nothing to do with home decor — it has to do with your teeth. People have started to take orthodontics into their owns hands by attempting to straighten teeth with items such as fishing line, electrical wire, rubber bands, and paper clips. Doctors say they’ve seen an increase in patients who have tried DIY braces. These projects have gained traction on social media, where teens make videos that capture their smile-correcting attempts. The American Association of Orthodontics reported that 13 percent of its members see patients who have tried DIY braces.

teeth can even fall out! Ultimately, DIY braces can permanently harm your teeth and gums and can end up costing you even more money in corrective work. If you want straight, healthy teeth, leave it to a professional.

Sensational Summer Salad 3 Yellowstone: Where the Wild Things Are 4

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

The Unspoiled Natural Majesty of Yellowstone National Park

This summer, skip the expensive hustle and bustle of an overcrowded theme park. After a vacation like that, you’ll feel like you need another. As far as getaway destinations go, Yellowstone National Park, sprawling across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, is a little more expansive . More than 3 million visitors flock to its astonishing peaks, multicolored pools, and dramatic geothermal geysers each year, but as you travel across Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres, it’s unlikely you’ll see much of them. And the sheer variety of unparalleled activities to explore means fun for the whole family.

Make sure to check out Old Faithful, the most famous geothermal geyser in the world, with eruptions averaging a whopping 130 vertical feet. Or if it’s majesty and exploration you’re itching for, hike one of the many trails along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The views, with clay cliff faces and tree-covered mountains in every direction, are unlike any other. Also, be sure to investigate the Grand Prismatic Spring, which, beside its otherworldly rainbow waters, is known for being the largest hot spring in the U.S. For many, though, the biggest draw of the park is the wildlife. Yellowstone is home to

the largest bison population on public land. It houses more mammals than anywhere else in the lower 48 states, 150 species of birds, and huge populations of native fish, to name a few. Just driving around the park, you’re apt to see moose, deer, elk, mountain goats, and, if you’re lucky, grizzly bears, mountain lions, or wolves. Go boating, catch a fish, scale a mountain, ride a horse — the things to do vary as much as the breathtaking landscape. If you’re looking for an affordable, relaxed, and wide-open family vacation this summer, Yellowstone is a no-brainer.
