SUMMER 2019

Getting Outside and Enjoying the Summer AND THANK YOU FOR VOTING US BEST DENTIST

In the meantime, he’s been really wonderful about helping us with the transition. I’m grateful to have an amazing community surrounding Sierra Crest Dental, including our team and our patients. That was never more evident to us than when we found out we were voted “Best Dentist” for North Lake Tahoe and Truckee for 2019! This is our seventh year to hold the title, and we could not be more grateful to you for voting for us! We were honored to get the news because it speaks to the amazing, loyal patients we get to serve every day. From day one, Sierra Crest Dental has been committed to investing in our patients. From the day I started, I’ve had the sense that this is a special place in the way it cares about people. I’ve been proven right again and again in the caring, compassionate team I work with and in the wonderful patients we serve every day. Winning “Best Dentist” is confirmation that we’re getting it right and is encouragement and motivation to continue to provide you with excellent care. We’re always looking for new opportunities to do that, whether it be updating equipment or creating a fun, welcoming environment you look forward to visiting. Suffice it to say, I’m so grateful for all our patients, including you. Thank you for making this a great place to work and live! I hope you have a wonderful start to your summer. P.S. Speaking of fun, have you seen our summer giveaway? It’s running now until Aug. 12, and for each patient you refer, you’re entered to win! Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram and send your family and friends our way to earn entries! –Dr. Delaney Now, get outside and go enjoy this beautiful land!

How is the summer treating you? After a rainy spring, I’m eager to get out on the trails! My mountain bike is calling, and I need to find the time to get back on it now that most of the trails have been cleared. With so many great spots to enjoy nearby, I want to make the most of the warmer weather and go on some long rides. We’re lucky to live in such a beautiful place, aren’t we? At home, we’ve also been hard at work on our backyard renovation. We’re building a horse track, and I’m so excited to see the finished result! It’s going to be a lot of fun to have access to the track just out our back door, and I bet our horses will enjoy the exercise, too! If you’ve seen Dr. Colpitts around, you know he’s enjoying the summer true to his adventurous, gregarious nature, with plenty of biking, boating, and time with his grandkids. We are continuing the search for the perfect new addition to the Sierra Crest Dental team to fill his very big shoes. As you can imagine, Dr. Colpitts is a tough act to follow!

The Effects of Sugar on Teeth

AND

Demineralization is continuously butting heads against another process called remineralization, which replaces destroyed minerals and strengthens the teeth. When someone eats a large quantity of sugars or starches, demineralization can happen more quickly and more often, and remineralization can’t keep up. CAVITIES The constant destruction of the enamel by these acids creates a bacterial infection, which can eat away at your tooth until there is a hole, aka a cavity. Cavities can be treated in many ways depending on their severity. If it has just started, using a remineralizing product, such as our CTx3 or CTx4 toothpaste, can increase remineralization and build up enamel again. Another

Everyone knows that an excessive amount of sugar isn’t healthy, but many are unaware why sugar is bad for teeth. It might surprise you to know that sugar itself isn’t what hurts your teeth; it’s what happens after you consume it. THE BATTLE OF THE MOUTH Our mouths are filled with bacteria, but don’t be alarmed because most of them are helpful rather than harmful. However, these helpful bacteria are at constant odds with those looking to destroy your enamel. Harmful oral bacteria feed on sugars, and, when they do, they produce acid, which strips healthy minerals from your tooth enamel. This process is known as demineralization.

MEET JAZZY!

Hello! I’m Jasmine, also known as Jazzy. I’m almost 14 years old, and I’m a Schipperke. In Belgium, I’m considered a small shepherd. My mom Tammy assists the doctors at the office. Boy, she sure loves her job. She said the best parts are the relationships with her patients and coworkers. She drives from Reno because it’s the very best office she has ever worked in. I’m the luckiest dog. My family loves me so much. I have two moms; if you think one is good, just imagine having two! My human brother, Taylor, got married on June 22 in Hawaii. I’m sure my mom has told you all about it. She is one proud mama.

The whole family went to Hawaii. I sure missed them while they were gone. But they had one of my friends come stay with me.

My sister Keyko went to a place called Rainbow Bridge two years ago. I sure miss her, but I realize now that I’m even more spoiled. I get the best spot on mom’s bed and extra love and treats. I think they worry I will go to Rainbow Bridge too someday, so they make the best of all our days together.

What a blessed life I have. Have a wonderful summer!

AN ANCIENT SOLUTION TO MODERN PROBLEMS

MPROVING YOUR ENAMEL

THE TRUTH ABOUT MEDITATION

option is to receive a filling, which is a common treatment that fills the hole with various materials, such as porcelain or tooth-colored resins. When the cavity isn’t treated, it burrows deeper into the tooth, causing pain and tooth loss. IMPROVING REMINERALIZATION Making sure your teeth are exposed to constant minerals is the best method to strengthen your enamel. In addition to using remineralizing rinses and toothpastes, keep an eye on your diet. Avoid sugary foods and instead consume fruits and vegetables with high fibers, cheeses and yogurts with calcium and phosphates, and black and green teas to repress harmful bacteria and, of course, always schedule your next dental cleaning with your hygienist.

Close your eyes and take a deep breath.

This is the first step in every meditation session. Though often associated with the New Age metaphysical movement, meditation isn’t all about incense and healing crystals. Meditation is an ancient practice that strengthens your mental focus, and recent research suggests that it offers real solutions to modern problems. WHAT IS MEDITATION? Meditation has strong roots in various religious and cultural traditions, but anyone can find value in practicing it. The purpose of meditation is to strengthen your mind by promoting mindfulness, focus, and awareness. DOES MEDITATION WORK? It depends on what you mean by “work.” Will meditation allow you to defy gravity and hover above the earth? Probably not. But there are so many benefits that will leave you feeling lighter in another way. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that mindful meditation lowers stress levels, and patients who habitually meditate report less chronic pain. Another study published in the same journal found that regular meditation also fights depression. HOW DO I MEDITATE? Meditating is as simple as sitting in a quiet place, closing your eyes, and focusing on your breathing for a few minutes. Whenever your mind starts to wander, gently bring it back to your breath. You don’t need to climb a mountain or pay for a week-long retreat to start meditating. That said, there are plenty of resources that help beginners build a strong foundation for meditation. Popular apps like Calm or Headspace are available on any smartphone and offer guided courses you can start anywhere, anytime. You could also check out the Alpenflow Yoga Studio in Truckee or Temple Yoga in Reno for guided classes in yoga and meditation. Meditation isn’t a magical ritual that will cure all that ails you, but plenty of research suggests meditation does provide tangible benefits to our mental and physical well-being. Maybe one day, meditation will be as commonplace as daily exercise.

Splash Down in McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park

A VISIT TO ONE OF CALIFORNIA’S MOST STUNNING WATERFALLS

to become the Burney Falls torrent. According to California’s Parks and Rec, 100 million gallons crash over the falls every day. The entire area is a geologist’s playground, pairing fine-grain black basalt with soft, white diatomite. That said, McArthur-Burney wasn’t named for its rock composition. Instead, it’s an homage to three of California’s 19th-century pioneers: Samuel Burney, a trapper, guide, and caretaker who died in the area; and John and Catherine McArthur, a married couple who bought a large tract of local land and set up a mercantile. In 1920, the McArthurs’ sons gifted the property around the falls to the state of California, and it became a state park. When you’re planning your trip to McArthur-Burney, be sure to check the Parks and Rec website (Parks.CA.gov) before you pack for the latest updates regarding weather events, trail closures, and recommended attire — and as the park is pet- free, do everyone a favor and leave Fido at home.

As the California Department of Parks and Recreation succinctly puts it, Burney Falls, the gem at the center of McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, is “not the highest or largest waterfall in the state, but possibly the most beautiful.” That was reason enough for us to make the trip to see it, and it should be for you, too. It takes just over three hours to drive to the park from Truckee, but not a minute of the journey is wasted effort. When you get there, spend the day checking out the gorgeous 129- foot falls; explore the five miles of hiking trails that meander through the evergreens; fish for trout, bass, bluegill, and crappie in the waterways; or choose one of the 100-plus sites and set up camp. The park’s beautiful setting is only possible because of the quirks of Californian geology. It’s a volcanic landscape shaped by erosion from weather and water features like Burney Creek, which starts at an underground spring and eventually swells
