The Best Time of the Year

THERE’S MORE TO IT THAN GOOD WEATHER

and beyond to ensure that everyone is cared for, patients and teammates alike. Her dedication to Sierra Crest Dental, excitement for dentistry, and positive demeanor make her an irreplaceable member of our team. We could not run this office the same without Tammy, and we are extremely thankful for her abilities. Congratulations, Tammy! Our team also had a team day at the lake that we used to get to know each other even better. Not everyone was able to make it, but it provided a great opportunity for our team to learn about our newest members. We aim to build strong relationships, and this was a great opportunity to let some new friendships bloom. We really do love our outstanding team of strong and intelligent women!

As summer closes out and fall is on the horizon, we look forward to pumpkin-spiced everything, family time, and apple pie. Temperatures may soon drop, but the fun is just heating up! At Sierra Crest Dental, there is a lot to be excited about! First and foremost, we are hosting an end-of-summer paddleboard giveaway! All you have to do is post a video testimonial to our website or one of our social media platforms, sharing your experience at our office or with one of our fantastic team members. You can keep it short and sweet, only 15–30 seconds long. The winner will be chosen at random, and they will receive a paddleboard package purchased from our local Blue Zone sports. Act fast because the deadline for submissions is Aug. 31. As many of you may know, we participated in the virtual Trails for Tails fundraiser on behalf of the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. This wonderful cause was aimed at gathering resources for homeless pets in our community. It was a roaring success! In fact, we raised $2,125 and walked

over 2,000 miles. That’s roughly equal to walking from our office doors to Cleveland! Our hygienist, Denée, was the top contributor for our team, helping raise over $400 and walking 225 miles on her own. Thank you to everyone who contributed! We look forward to participating again next year. Denée isn’t the only one worth congratulating. We want to especially celebrate Tammy for being an exceptional dental assistant and team member! Nobody ever has to ask Tammy for help because she is always ahead of the game. She goes above

Finally, we also want to thank all of our longtime patients and our newest patients as well. Sierra Crest Dental was named Best of N. Lake Tahoe and Truckee 2021 for the ninth time. We could not have done it without our amazing staff and all of our wonderful patients. There truly is no limit to the exciting things that are happening at Sierra Crest Dental and our community right now. We would love to hear about the exciting events that are going on in your life right now. We all belong to the same community, and together we can reach a better tomorrow. –The SCD Team

What ’s That Smell?

HOW TO GET FRESH BREATH

start to stink. Other factors include drinking too much alcohol or smoking and chewing tobacco.

Happy (belated) National Fresh Breath Day! Unless you're a dentist or in dental marketing, you may have no idea that this seemingly small, strange holiday even exists, but it does — on Aug. 6, to be exact.

Some people may also struggle with chronic halitosis (chronic bad breath). In some serious cases, this could be a symptom of an underlying medical issue, an allergy symptom, or the result of medication. If you’re concerned, let us know. We can help you find the cause! Ew! How do you fix it? As with any dental issue, the best way to prevent and treat smelly breath is to regularly brush and floss your teeth. This removes stuck-on food particles, sugar, and plaque buildup, all of which could be contributing to your bad breath. (Don’t forget to brush your tongue and replace your toothbrush regularly!)

It’s wise not to ignore this day, as it can serve as an important reminder to keep your mouth clean, fresh, and balanced.

So, what is bad breath? Those noxious fumes wafting from your mouth could be the result of any number of scenarios. Simply eating or drinking something potent, like coffee, garlic, or onions, can produce sulfides, which cause the smell to linger. You could also be eating too many sweets. The bad bacteria in your mouth love to feed on these sugary morsels, and the plaque buildup could

RUBIN AND ARLO’S SUMMERTIME FUN

Rubin Hello again! It’s me, Rubin, the great big sheepdog! I’ve been loving the sunshine and warmth of summer; it’s really when I’m at my happiest. Have you noticed the deer and chipmunks that are out? As the guard dog of the house, it’s my responsibility to chase those critters away from the property. Arlo doesn’t seem to be as interested, but I plan to continue training him as he gets wiser. My mom, Virg, and the family have been taking a lot of trips that Arlo and I aren’t allowed to go on. It’s okay, though! They’ve been leaving us with Haley, who works at the front desk and takes Arlo and me for long walks. We even summited Castle Peak! You should have seen how impressed everyone was with us. Arlo Hi there! It’s me, Arlo! You know, the part poodle, part golden retriever bundle of energy! I’m finally big enough to keep up with Rubin, but I think he gets annoyed when I am a little too excited. I’ve been having a blast while Mom and the family have been away. Haley takes me to all kinds of trails where I can hike and swim. I’m a really good hiker! Steep terrain doesn’t even bother me! It’s been hot lately, so I’ve found the best place to relax is at the Truckee River. It’s also another one of my favorite places to swim! I can’t wait for Mom to return, but Haley has been the perfect substitute.

IS THIS GOOD FOR ME?

APPS TO HELP YOU MAKE SMART FOOD CHOICES

If you can’t brush your teeth the moment you catch the smell, popping a piece of sugar-free gum or a mint into your mouth could do the trick. Try rinsing with water, drinking more water, or eating mild food, like carrots or bell peppers, to scrub away at your teeth and gums. Treatment for more chronic cases of halitosis could mean changes to your diet and lifestyle choices and potential adjustments to your treatment for serious medical conditions. Before doing this, please consult with Dr. Delaney or Dr. Mier. Be sure to keep up with routine cleanings to keep your mouth healthy. We can help you find a solution that fits into your lifestyle and restores the balance of smell in your mouth!

Sometimes going grocery shopping can leave you feeling more like a detective than a human just trying to feed yourself and your family. Sleuthing down the snack aisle brings up questions about whether gluten-free means “good” and whether no added sugars means “nutritious.” The foundation of healthy snacking includes fresh fruits and vegetables, but how can you make smart (or smarter) choices when buying packaged snack foods? New smartphone apps mean the answer is just one bar code away. Switch It Up FoodSwitch is a mobile app developed by an international health advocacy group, The George Institute for Global Health. Even packaged foods that purport to be healthy can have high levels of salt, sugar, and saturated fat. While valuable information appears on nutritional labels, they can also leave you more mystified than empowered. In that case, simply open the FoodSwitch app, scan the bar code of the item you’re interested in, and get instant nutritional information and options for healthier alternatives. Each item gets a Health Star Rating from .5–5, making it easy to understand where the item falls on the health spectrum and how it compares to other brands. If that item doesn’t meet your dietary needs, let FoodSwitch recommend an alternative. In a Snap If you’re already a dedicated Snapchat user and don’t want to add another app to your phone, you’re in luck. Snapchat has recently implemented a scanning technology powered by the nutrition-tracking app Yuka. While it has similarities to FoodSwitch, the format Snapchat uses lays out the nutritional pros and cons of each item and gives each item an overall rating on the traffic-light system. Green means good to go, yellow means proceed with caution (moderation), and red means reconsider or only eat this item rarely. With these two apps, you can put down your magnifying glass and pick up your smartphone. Making healthier snack choices is right at your fingertips.
