OUR HYGIENISTS NEED A BREAK TOO!

JUNE 2021

We did it! My husband and I went on a vacation without the kids! He had been ill for a couple years and was feeling better, so we decided to go on a road trip.

It was a lot of fun. We drove through Ohio and Kentucky to get to Tennessee. It was an eight-hour drive through incredible scenery.

When we reached the Smokies, we got a cabin with a mountain view. It was absolutely beautiful. We even had a hot tub on our deck that only added to the experience. Speaking of experiences, we saw a black bear with her two cubs while we were out hiking! That was one of the highlights of the trip for sure. We also spent a lot of our time exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We hiked, took in the scenery, and saw so many waterfalls. It was actually harder to hike up in the mountains because of the elevation we’re not used to, so it was harder to breathe at times. I mean, it doesn’t help when you’re out of shape — but I’m going to blame the elevation on this one. When we weren’t hiking, we paid a visit to the town of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, which is nestled in the mountains. While we were there, we visited their aquarium, which was very cool! Another part of our adventure was gondola rides! These were ski lifts we took up the mountain, and at the top, there was a cute little village complete with a restaurant overlooking everything!

Finally, we went whitewater rafting on the Pigeon Forge River, which was amazing! I’d done it before, but this was my husband’s first time.

Overall, it was a fantastic trip. It was great to get out and really stretch our legs like we haven’t done in a long time. –Therese

There’s nothing so trendy as a new superfood or diet, and the “in vogue” ones change constantly. Older readers may remember the Atkins diets and other fads of the early 2000s, but younger ones may not even remember a time before the paleo diet was a thing — and it’s already almost a thing of the past. Many things we associate with these trends, though, are anything but new. We see this most clearly with the grains we turn to in the name of health. Westerners generally wouldn’t be familiar with quinoa, amaranth, teff, or kamut if it weren’t for their presence in the hippest healthy-eating Instagram feeds. Many of these foods hail from Africa or the Far East, so it’s understandable we don’t know them all — but there’s nothing really new about them. People in the Americas and the Old World have eaten quinoa for 3,000– 5,000 years. Teff, which is technically a grass seed, was one of the first domesticated plants, emerging thousands of years ago in what is now Ethiopia. Alternate sources of protein and fiber show a similar trend. Seaweed — the perennial favorite of Twitter dieters everywhere — has been consumed in China, Korea, and Japan since before recorded history. If you know anything about recorded history in Kale, Seaweed, and Other Not-So-New Superfoods

those regions, then you know that’s a long time! And kale, whose reputation precedes itself, has been cultivated since at least 2,000 B.C. in Greece, Asia Minor, and other parts of the Mediterranean. So, the next time you dig into your favorite health food, take a moment to Google what you are eating. You might be part of a long line of human beings who have turned to that food for sustenance over the millennia!

Fluoride varnish is a medication we paint on the teeth. Fluoride is a natural mineral proven for decades to prevent dental cavities! It adds back all the minerals to our enamel that have been lost from eating and drinking sugary and acidic foods. Fluoride cannot remove decay, but it can prevent it from penetrating the deeper parts of the tooth. Building a nice strong enamel with fluoride treatments every six months at your dentist can drastically help reduce your chance of needing a filling!

FLUORIDE VARNISH: IT’S NOT JUST FOR KIDS!

So why is it important for adults to get a fluoride treatment?

There are several reasons, but the most crucial reason is dry mouth. Dry mouth causes tooth decay because it allows harmful acids, plaque, and food to stay on the teeth . Our saliva helps buffer these acids to a neutral PH and coat and protect our teeth. Without enough saliva, acids left on the teeth as a result of dry mouth can lead to enamel erosion and cavities. Many prescription drugs cause dry mouth. In fact, most do! The average number of American adults on medication is 50%, and of those, at least four drugs are taken per day by the average adult! Fluoride is also excellent for adults who suffer from sensitive teeth and tooth root exposure (receded gums). Tooth roots are highly susceptible to decay, but fluoride treatments will protect the exposed root surfaces and minimize their sensitivity.

Fluoride varnish takes one minute to apply and can be done at your six-month checkup!

There’s no better way to learn how to put together a motivational playlist than to ask a pro. Peloton’s bikes and treadmills are wildly popular,

will push themselves when they’re moved by the feeling of a song or how the music makes them feel,” she says. It doesn’t matter if it’s ambient electronic music or a lilting Johnny Cash tune, both of which can be found routinely on Hainby’s cycling playlists. MAKE IT THEMED Whether you’re obsessed with ‘90s pop, classic rock jams, or David Bowie, you

but now, users are working out through their app because of the high-energy instructors, many of whom have become known for their amazing playlists. Here are two instructors’ tips to put together a killer playlist. MIX IT UP Instructor Leanne Hainsby is known for the eclectic, feel-good songs that keep people pedaling hard in her cycling classes. Hainsby credits her vast musical tastes to her time as a dancer, which expanded her playlist for workout music.

can use a theme to create workout playlists you’ll love. This is a great trick pros like Peloton instructor Christine D’Ercole use. D’Ercole is beloved by many for her themed classes, which range from an indie rock beginners’ ride to a fan-favorite all ‘90s ride. She also has holiday-themed playlists, like the one for her Women’s History Month ride in March that featured only female artists. You can always hop onto Spotify and check out the Peloton page to see all of their instructors’ recent playlists. Use this for inspiration to create your own list or stream whichever compilation catches your attention for your next workout.
