Give Back to Strathroy and Volunteer with CMHA At CMHA Thames Valley Addiction and Mental Health Services, our volunteers impact the lives and the quality of life of our clients every day. Today we have more than 300 volunteers! And, we continue to welcome all applicants to join the team. Volunteer With Us! Our organization has a robust volunteer program, including opportunities for volunteers to participate from the comfort of their homes. In fact, two of our largest volunteer-powered programs are conducted over the phone – Friendly Callers, and the Support Line. These programs are immensely valuable to the community, and we are so grateful to have an inspiring group of volunteers to ensure we can continue offering them to those in need. The Impact of Our Volunteers The impact of these programs cannot be overlooked. In 2021, the Support Line received more than 27,000 calls. That’s more than 73 calls every day of the year! The Support Line is a 24/7 therapeutic listening line that offers help when you are experiencing distress, which is a personal experience unique to you. Our volunteer leadership team conducts thorough, helpful training as part of the onboarding experience for all new volunteers so everyone feels prepared and comfortable from their very first shift. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our team recorded a 43% increase in calls to the Support Line, many coming from older adults who were feeling anxious, lonely and isolated. Seeing a gap that we could address, our agency launched Friendly Callers in partnership with United Way Elgin Middlesex. Participants of this program are matched with a volunteer who will provide weekly check-ins, supportive listening and assist with access to community and social supports. Since its launch, there has been a large amount of positive feedback, with one participant saying she feels very supported, that her Friendly Caller helps her a lot and that she loves chatting with her. To date, there are 100 unique individuals participating in the program. Our volunteer team continues to welcome and encourage Strathroy residents to give back to their community by connecting with individuals in need. Throughout the pandemic, one thing has become clear to us – that social connection is infinitely important to a person’s mental and physical wellbeing. Through the Support Line and Friendly Callers, our volunteers are delivering support to those in need, whether that is through encouragement, sharing resources, or offering a friendly, non-judgemental listening ear. “I do not know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” – Albert Schweitzer Thank You Volunteers!

Reed’s Sports Corner April 2022 Caradoc Sands Golf Club Wins Heart Award
LondonOntarioGolf.com announces that Caradoc Sands Golf Club in Strathroy is the winner of the 2022 London Ontario Golf Heart Award. The semi-private golf club (est. 2003) is the 12th winner of the Heart Award, established in 2011 and presented annually to a member of the Southwestern Ontario golf community who unselfishly gives back to local golf.
To advertise here please contact [email protected] According to Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc Mayor Joanne Vanderheyden, “London Ontario Golf has discovered what we’ve known for many years: that Caradoc Sands is “We’re thrilled to be recognized for our commitment to the Strathroy-Caradoc community,” said Caradoc Sands GC general manager Denton Hackney. “Growing the game of golf has always been our passion, and it lives today through our Kids Play Free program. We also donate 100 rounds of golf each year to groups and not-for-profits raising money for charity, in addition to offering other financial support to those causes. Our entire team is proud to add our name to the London Ontario Golf Heart Award.” Award-winning publication London Ontario Golf (est. 2004) – The Voice of Golf in Southwestern Ontario – is now published in its entirety at parent publication, LondonOntarioSports.com – London’s Trusted Source for Sports News & Information. London Ontario Golf launched the Heart Award in 2011 in order to recognize a community member who gives back to the game through unselfish efforts. The award honours those within the categories of golf professionals/instructors, golf mentors, golf course owners/operators, golf course architects/ designers and members of the media. Caradoc Sands GC is much more than a popular, pristine, parkland-style golf course measuring from 5,094 to 6,303 yards in the heart of Southwestern Ontario farm country. In fact, from the moment owners Frank and Ann Toth opened their Bill Fox Jr.-designed course for play in 2003, the entire Strathroy- Caradoc community has embraced the club as a vital part of its identity. And in turn, the family-owned club has supported Strathroy-Caradoc through unparalleled philanthropy and through initiatives aiming to grow the game of golf. This year, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, LondonOntarioGolf.com wished to recognize a grassroots member of the Southwestern Ontario golf community who not only provides a great fitness offering and outdoor escape from the realities of life, but also who continues to grow and support the game as it sees record numbers of rounds played in Canada. We are all familiar with the Rogers Hometown Hockey initiative. But in fact, a golf club within a small-town Ontario community like Strathroy-Caradoc also acts as the heartbeat of that community. Caradoc Sands GC has supported hundreds of local groups and not-for-profits, provides free golf for junior golfers and their families, offers immaculate playing conditions and is the hub of local sports, leisure and business activity through golf, hospitality and special events.
an important part of Strathroy-Caradoc and a great support to the community. Through their hosting of charity events, continued donations to the community and focus on youth sports, the team at Caradoc Sands continually open their doors and their hearts. “Through these pandemic times, Caradoc Sands has been a hub of fun and recreation, dedicated to providing us with a venue for fun, exercise and family time, and a continuation of something positive in our lives,” Vanderheyden said. “With this award, Caradoc Sands joins the notable ranks of previous honourees like Mike Weir who have truly embraced the game of golf and its impact on communities across Southwestern Ontario.” Award-winning journalist and author Jeffrey Reed of Strathroy has covered sports in Southwestern Ontario since 1980. He is publisher and editor of LondonOntarioSports.com.

KOMOKA, ONTARIO Legend has it that milkmaids seemed to be immune from the smallpox plagues as they swept through Europe. English physician Edward Jenner developed a vaccine for smallpox based upon this folk knowledge. Cows can produce a ton of milk: A cow turns grass into milk within two to three days. Depending on the breed, a cow can make between 25 and 40 liters of milk per day. Milkmaid folklore led to smallpox vaccine Whether you are replacing one lant or planning new landscaping, get expert advice to help you choose the plants to suit your needs. One flowering tree can make uch a difference t a picture of your home. The gre and flowers on your ornamental tree or shrub sh wcase the lines of your yard and home. They add scare you, there is always someone looking out for you. Using simple art to help her message, Jess touches on her faith. “As my family did in raising me, I pass on to my children [my faith], which is strongly based on Christianity. I always tell my kids, ‘love and kindness always win.’ It was also important to me to not discriminate any ethnicity, so I felt the story’s angel and demon icons worked well. I hope when a child reads or is listening to the story, they will think about their own angels and that they can call upon them anytime for guidance, and that they will understand the consequences of their choices, good or bad.” Jess is now back at work on Mosta , a series of young adult novels. If you would like to pick up a copy of Angels and Creeping Monsters , it is available as a paperback on Amazon for $9.97 or for Kindle at $6.97. National D iry Month This June, celebrate National Dairy Month with your favorite dairy treat. Originally established as a grocery/milk promotion in 1937, National Dairy Month now acts as a reminder of the health benefits that dairy products provide. They contain essential nutrients — including calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and protein. They also reduce the risk of high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and certain cancers, while helping us to better manage our weight. Did You Know? Strathroy, Ontario was named for founder John Buchanan's home estate in Omagh, Ireland. The town is home to Strathroy Dairy, Ireland's oldest family dairy. Dairy is good for your bones. Calcium is crucial to the growth and strengthening of bones. A simple glass of milk, some yogurt, or a piece of cheese helps to fight off brittle bones and osteoporosis. Milk is the only food that you can survive on alone. It has every nutrient you need. Cows have friends: Dairy cows are social animals. Like people, they will make friends and bond with some, while avoiding others. Springing into the Garden with Zimmermann’s Nursery by Gloria Rae More Bang For Your Buck With Better Windows While Canadians enjoy getting outdoors for spring turf maint ance, landscaping and cleanups, they’re also turni g now to improving their homes’ windows and doors. For example, not only do window replacements greatly improve curb appeal, but also they add energy efficiency during a time when ev ry penny counts. Victor Meilutis of First Class Windows, Doors and Siding, Inc. in Komoka reminds us that new r windows should absolutely be the choice in today’s modern homes, where improved aesthetics and energy efficiency go hand in hand. “But plea e consider th t t ere is currently an extended timeframe in terms of window delivery, due to supply chain issues and the COVID-19 pandemic,” Meilutis said “Building on Ontario initiatives, the Canada Greener Homes Grant allows homeowners to get more bang for their buck when it comes to improved energy efficiency,” said M ilutis. “Canadians are energy co scious, and n w with this program from the Federal government, less money is coming out of your pocket for home improvements.”

Emerald Cedar as a 2 Tier Poodle and Spiral shapes “Most evergreens are trimmed anytime of the growing season,” the Zimmermanns advise. “The exceptions are Spruce and Pine which should only be trimmed after the new growth has flushed out, around mid June. Only trim two-thirds of the new growth. Do not trim into last year's wood, as this will caus ea -end branch and no new buds will form on this tip.” It is said that spring is a lovely reminder of how beautiful change truly can be. The team at Zimmermann’s Nursery Ltd. in Strathroy mbrace this philosophy, and remind you that now that spring has sprung, it’s time to start thinking about cleaning your yard. A good place to start is removing all of the fall leaves and branches that have scattered around your property. Then, it’s time to do some trimming. According to Tina and Tony Zimmermann, “A good rule to follow is, trim summer flowering shrubs in spring, and trim spring flowering shrubs right after they flower. Summer flowering plants such as Spirea and Hydrangea Paniculata varieties can be trimmed back one- third of the growth. Spring flowering plants like Forsythia and Magnolia are best trimmed after they flower to a size that you wish to maintain.
Juniperus ch. Spartan - Spartan Juniper - Oriental Pom Pom · If you are overseeding your lawn, again, consult with your gardening expert, who can recommend proper seed and timing around fertilizing. Both seeding and fertilizing, along with cutting at a moderate length – and lots of water, with help from Mother Nature – will encourage a thicker lawn and will crowd out weeds. · Encourage fast, even growth with fertilizer. Ask your lawn and garden expert for tips on timing and on which fertilizer to use. And be sure to use a spreader for even distribution. Emerald Ceder, 2 Tier Poodle, Emerald Cedar Spiral · The same goes for larger, motorized lawn and gardening tools, including mowers and trimmers. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to a tee when it comes to gas-, electric- and battery-powered tools. · It’s time to dig out your gardening tools, including pruners and shears. Make sure they are in working order, clean and sharp.

Many homeowners have decided to remove walls to make their main floor open concept, renovate kitchens and bathrooms, complete unfinished basements and make additions to their homes. General Contractors are key to creating a successful, smooth transition while taking stress away from clients. Each step will be carefully planned, organized and executed with materials ordered and available in a timely manner. There are many positives to hiring a general contractor. Here are a few that make the top of our list.
DESIGN + BUILD PROJECT MANAGEMENT
1) General Contractors will always come with a large network of sub-contractors. These trades have been carefully selected and carry their own WSIB/Liability insurance. 2) The general contractor is responsible for managing the execution of the project while taking care of all permits/inspections, materials and managing subtrades. They are the one point of contact to work with throughout the renovation process instead of clients dealing with suppliers and each trade separately. 3) General Contractors will come with the knowledge and experience, and will hold high standards on products and labour to get the renovation completed right - the first time. Whether you are starting from scratch or want to update your home, General Contracting is a crucial component to your projects success. Family owned, EverPine Contracting Ltd.
