CREATIVE REVIEW: A LOOK BACK AT 2015

Since its launch, IN:SIGHT has taken on a life of its own, and I invite you to read more about two of our favourite ‘success stories’ in the coming pages. As with any project, its ongoing relevance and credibility will depend on our determination as a Creative Team to evolve and grow with it. Keen to start as we mean to go on, we approached the selection process with a view to leaving our comfort zone behind and immersing ourselves in art that is not currently represented within our existing portfolio. As a result, this exhibition comprises a vast array of mediums, styles and subject matter; an amalgamation that one would normally not expect to see curated into one display. Arguably, we have inadvertently initiated and adopted a genre of our own, one that challenges and delights in equal measure. Thematically, ethics, politics and charity are all represented for the first time this year, and we are also seeing fresh processes take their place in the final line- up, from the application of decommissioned weaponry to paint in water suspensions captured and engineered through cutting edge digital media. In the spirit of a traditional Summer Exhibition, our artists hail from all walks of life, and each bring something different to the table. The standard of submissions this year has been exceptional, and the final display has the vivid colour and explosive energy that one would expect from a Summer Exhibition. We are very excited to gauge visitors’ reactions to the assemblage, and see what lies in store for the artists in the coming months and years.

IN:SIGHT is a unique opportunity for us as fine art publishers to reach out to contemporary painters, photographers and sculptors, with a view to curating a Summer Exhibition that represents the very best that the art scene has to offer. Following a nationwide call for aspiring visual artists working in any field or medium to submit their work to a panel of art reviewers, a final selection of 16 British and international artists was made. In reviewing the work submitted by so many gifted aspiring artists, we were pleased to see such diversity of subject and medium. Their combined submissions have been brought together into one beautifully curated display of more than eighty individual artworks. Powered by IN:SIGHT and driven by the vision and experience of Washington Green’s dedicated Creative Team, this year’s Summer Exhibition boasts a wonderfully varied spectrum of art. Designed to allow all disciplines a chance to shine, we hope to introduce audiences to previously unfamiliar styles and subject matter. We hope visitors to the exhibition will derive great enjoyment from not only how the various pieces complement each other, but also the contrast that the work provides when viewed as a collection in its entirety. NIGEL MASON

Nigel’s star has been on the rise since coming through IN:SIGHT 2015 and taking part in the Summer Exhibition. After being offered a contract by Washington Green, he has climbed the ranks to become one of their most popular originals artists in the last year and gained admirers far and wide. Such is his growing international acclaim, he was invited by Miva Fine Art to have a solo exhibition at their Stockholm gallery in August 2016. Artist Statement: “When I was selected to exhibit in last year’s Summer Exhibition, I could not possibly have foreseen where this would lead. This past year with Washington Green has enabled me to work exclusively on my painting. I have been able to develop my personal practice in terms of quality of materials, presentation of work, time management and developing a steady

studio practice. But the main effect of being fnancially independent as an artist is the ability to concentrate on my own work and develop fner technique, work through ideas and, most importantly, to fnd my own ‘voice’. Through Washington Green, I have taken commissions for collectors, attended promotional events, had interviews with media, written and given talks about my work and had limited editions of my work published. These activities are far removed from the refned atmosphere of the studio but are absolutely crucial in obtaining a wider understanding (and appreciation) of an artist’s working life. I now appreciate the symbiotic nature between the creator and the promoter of artwork. When asked to attend the ‘Meet The Artists’ day at the Summer Exhibition, I didn’t know what

to expect. When I started out as an artist my experience of previews and artist appearances were of short lived, sparsely attended do’s with little effort from gallery staff. The Summer Exhibition at Castle Fine Art was the polar opposite. Upon arrival, the gallery staff were welcoming and upbeat - they had a positivity and energy that was infectious. My work had been beautifully displayed to the best advantage, and this played a major part in the successful sales. It was a pleasure as well as informative to meet the Washington Green directors, founding members and head offce teams. I learned the history of the company and an insight as to its workings, its systems and ethos. I also enjoyed meeting other artists, putting faces to the names and swapping stories of the trials and tribulations of being a working artist. The exhibition was a sell out for me. This had

a positive effect on me in regards to pointing a direction for future work, promoting a professional practice and giving me a feel good factor that has stayed with me all year. On a personal note, I have had a blast this past year! I have grown as an artist and feel welcomed amongst my fellow artists. I feel confdent and optimistic about the future and I intend to work hard for the mutual beneft of everyone involved.

ROBERT OXLEY

An alumnus of Summer Exhibition 2015, Robert’s career has gone from strength to strength. His work has featured in both Autumn 2015 and Spring 2016 collections, and he now has several sell out editions to his name. With wide demand for artist appearances at galleries across the UK and a rapidly growing collector base, we predict great things for Robert! Artist Statement: “In April 2015 I entered IN:SIGHT and sent Washington Green some samples of some work I’d produced over the previous few months. I’d been following the career of the American artist Josh Keyes; his work features wildlife in surreal settings so I was instantly drawn to him. I was reading an article of his in Juxtapoz magazine where he talked about his work, what’s going on and what was on the rise in the art world. The interviewer asked what Keyes thought would be coming up in the future and he said that anyone making

psychedelic paintings should hold on to their hats. I remember thinking ‘yeah right, if only!’ Only two days later I had a reply from Washington Green. I remember my partner Nicola running out into our garden almost screaming ‘Washington Green have sent an email’ and at that point just hearing back from someone was enough to surprise me, let alone being invited to their Head Offce to discuss my work, future plans etc - especially after all those years trying to get someone even to look at my work. I hadn’t given up but I had come to accept that the status quo of emailing everywhere and being ignored was a normality. I had absolutely no idea what to expect on the train journey down to Washington Green’s Head Offce. Meeting everyone was overwhelming, and to hear that they loved my work blew me away. We had a chat about the upcoming Summer Exhibition and off I went feeling happier and more excited than I thought possible. It occurred to me that if nothing

who wanted to hear about my work was a revelation – these people had made an effort, had given up their Saturday afternoon to travel to the gallery to meet me, it left me speechless.

else came from it, at least I would have had work exhibited in a major gallery. It was after I returned home and was working on my pieces for the exhibition that it all began to sink in. I had purpose, hope, a chance, things were moving. I was invited down to Castle Fine Art in the ICC to take part in the ‘Meet The Artists’ day, which allowed people to visit the gallery and chat to all of us artists exhibiting, which was an incredible experience for me. Seeing my work in a beautiful exhibition catalogue, my name in print, was just magic. I used to sit and look at artists in magazines at their shows and wonder what that would be like, wanting that recognition so badly I’d physically ache for it. Meeting visitors to the gallery who wanted to hear about my work was a revelation - these people had made an effort, had given up their Saturday afternoon to travel to the gallery to meet me, it left

me speechless. Not only that, but then to be told that most of my work had already sold and the exhibition still wasn’t over, I couldn’t have wished for more. Chatting to the other artists and trading stories was great fun, and spending time with the Washington Green head offce and Castle Fine Art gallery staff was invaluable. These guys work hard to help us artists, to promote us and build our brands, and you can tell that they genuinely love what they do. Following what was such an incredible start to my relationship with Washington Green, things have gone from strength to strength. I’m so relieved that I entered IN:SIGHT and would urge anyone else looking to pursue their art career to do likewise. For the frst time in many years, I have nothing to complain about and everything to look forward to; life feels pretty good right now.” - Robert Oxley, 2016

This year, they have taken their lead from the PANTONE® “Colour of The Year” for 2016, with a palette that centres on the winning combination ‘Rose Quartz’ and ‘Serenity’. This is an absolute frst for the much revered Pantone Color Institute® headed by acclaimed colour specialist Leatrice Eiseman – never before has a combination of more than one colour attained this status. Joined together Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and

complexity” of the colours in their art. Interestingly, the blend of ‘Rose Quartz’ and ‘Serenity’ lends itself to myriad incarnations, from achingly cool urban design, to the most delicate and pure of subject matter in nature, illustrated perfectly when viewing Tom Bird’s photographic piece ‘Luminous Tower Block’. The sky captures a spectrum journeying from dusky pink tones to vibrant blues, and beautifully juxtaposes the élan of nature against the brutalist style of the inner city tower block. All of which reinforces the contextual statement issued by PANTONE®: 'Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance' and further reinforces exactly why this branding is an extension of the curated equilibrium of artwork on display in the Summer Exhibition 16.

Widely regarded as an indicator for trends, attitudes and concepts in current culture, the PANTONE® Colour of the Year 2016 insightfully encapsulates movements in gender fluidity, mindfulness and self-expression. Never has a colour scheme been more appropriate on branding for a collective of artists such as those in our Summer Exhibition. Kim Byungkwan tells us he aims to “bring out strangeness from familiarity” and “reconstruct habitual vision”, stepping outside any self or socially imposed constraints to force an audience into discoveries beyond their comfort zones. Colour as an entity is also a key theme in the work produced by art collective, Plume. Their main desire is for the viewer to be captivated and transported by the “form and

have mirrored the pivotal moments in modern history, from the role of women through the increasing prominence of contributing female artists, to themes of imperialism, politics and warfare, as reflected in the subject matter of the work within the collections. Further, it is often possible to track the shifts within the selection committees based on the fnal collections they present, and the ensuing critical writings that the exhibitions attract. In short, it is not hyperbole to state that the Summer Exhibition acts as a thermometer for what’s hot and what’s not, a barometer that measures socio-economic pressures and a compass that sets the path for our next direction of travel.

Democratic and diverse at its heart, the Summer Exhibition is acknowledged as the most popular open-submission occasion in the art calendar, where works by established names sit alongside those by emerging and aspiring artists. As we open our very own Summer Exhibition, we reflect on the history surrounding this bastion of the art world, and explore its contemporary guise, appeal and function. Beginning within the context of the British art scene, we must look to The Royal Academy for our baseline. Champions of the Summer Exhibition tradition, their own is the undisputed longest running of its kind, having been held without interruption since 1769. Such is the reverence for this institution, the Academy is already working towards a major exhibition in

2018, to celebrate the 250th anniversary, devoted to its history and the legacy it has bequeathed. Indeed, the concept of a Summer Exhibition has translated and evolved in recent times, adopted as a practice by industries with little or no connection to the world of art. We have seen many institutions embrace the tradition, from Goodwood to The Royal Society, architectural faculties at leading universities and local historical societies. These occasions, much like our own Summer Exhibition, are held to celebrate the achievements of the participants and promote competition and collaboration. Since its emergence in the 18th century, the Summer Exhibition has chronicled social change. The carefully curated displays

ADRIAN THOMPSON–BOYCE:

Using the humble pencil, Adrian creates intricately detailed, lifelike depictions from the animal kingdom. Having studied art in college, he then found his way into the world of work and fne art took a back seat as a hobby which allowed him to combine his deep fascination with nature with the relaxing, meditative qualities of drawing. Adrian says he has dabbled in many mediums, but always returns to the pencil saying it “concentrates the eye and mind on the subject without diluting the composition with colour.” His works are drawn on society journals about the preservation of flora and fauna. Adrian discovered the journals, which date back as far as the 1920s, gathering dust in an antique book shop, and has given them a new lease of life with his art. Adrian says: “I hope that by drawing on these pages it does two things; frstly it exposes the page, which in all likelihood would not have been seen again. Secondly it highlights the fragility of nature, and that the struggle to preserve it has been in our minds for many years and should be for many more to come. That is something that we should all care about.”

CARL MCCROW:

In 2011, Carl McCrow’s close friend lost both legs and an arm in an explosion whilst on tour with the British Army in Afghanistan. It was one of the catalysts that turned a distant fascination with guns and weaponry into questions about individual purpose, morality, hidden stories and the ability of one person to make a difference. McCrow set up the charity ‘One Less Gun’ to change the way the world deals with surplus and illicit small arms. He aims to destroy 1,000,000 guns through his charity work, with each gun destroyed and given new life as a unique and provocative piece of art. His controversial, thought-provoking art embraces the contradictory views that come with guns and refocuses them with a fresh perspective and a heartfelt purpose. Carl says: “The art of disarmament is to acknowledge the human stories that share their history with each weapon, question individual purpose and our own morality, challenging our sanitised views of guns, and the ability collectively to make a difference.”

DAMIEN MCGINLEY: Born in Ireland, Damien studied in Coventry and Bristol, before going on to exhibit internationally in countries including Belgium, Germany and France. Combining oil paint and collage, he says his urban realism mixed media works are inspired by “the stuff that binds us”. Having been painting and exhibiting professionally for over 20 years, he counts the Culture Ireland Exhibitions Award and English Arts Council Exhibitions award amongst his accolades to date. Damien has refned his work over recent years, aiming to look more intently at the dialogue and relationship between humans and the persistent urban realism that envelops them. Damien says: “As each component is propelled to component, they begin to influence one another. Hard edges with concrete, architecture, man and machine merge into blended essences. Constantly changing associations are inevitably released in these environments, and the observer is gradually pulled into the process of continuous transformation, in a melting pot of man, modernity, and dynamics.”

DAVID WELKER: David is a New York based contemporary artist known for his elaborate posters, murals and paintings, ranging from surreal landscapes to urban realism. His work over the last two decades has built a devout following from private collectors and celebrities to some of the top musical performers in the world. Welker is now setting his sights on the gallery world as he continues to express his deep appreciation of early 20th century surrealism combined with his love of pervasive pop culture.  David says: “My style mixes Depression era surrealism with a contemporary take on underground comix. My career has followed a path of experimentation moving from working in the landscape mural scene to the modern poster scene in just a few years.”

GORDON HARRIS: Self-taught artist Gordon is gaining a strong reputation as one of Ireland’s most promising fgurative painters. Working with oil on board, often embellished with genuine gold and silver leaf, Gordon’s contemporary realism work is inspired by artists such as Van Ike and Caravaggio. With his influences ranging from the masters of the Renaissance to contemporary art, his work fuses classical and modern interpretations within single works. Gordon says: “Today’s society has a huge influence on most of my works. Every day I look into my children’s eyes and realise what they have to face in society - it triggers the creative drive in me and the need to communicate what I envisage to others. It is important that my works sit alongside some of the best artists in their feld. The IN:SIGHT exhibition is a great opportunity to showcase my works to a wider audience.”

IAN POLLOCK: A self-taught artist working exclusively in bronze, Ian currently works out of Dublin’s Cast Foundry, a reputable foundry which casts work from many of Ireland’s most prominent sculptors. With nearly twenty years’ experience, the technical skill and creative energy found in his sculptures sees him regularly exhibiting alongside Ireland’s fnest artists. Inspiration for his sculptures comes from all aspects of his daily life - Ian sees his work like a three dimensional diary, letting his art reflect his emotions and imagination. He recently completed a life size bronze of James Joyce, now located in the centre of Dublin, and his work is in many private and public collections in Ireland, UK, France and the USA. Ian says: “It’s a powerful gift to have, to be able to bring out emotions in a person just by shaping a piece of wax and casting it in bronze to look a certain way, something I will never ever take for granted.”

To me, my self- portraits are not really portraits – they are moments of self- reflection which capture a momentary stillness in time “

IRINA STARKOVA: Born in Moscow and currently residing in London, Irina combines elements of realism, pop art and portraiture in her striking works. She draws inspiration from a multitude of sources, including natural history, Russian literature and photography, and cites painter and photographer Chuck Close as her favourite artist. She has enjoyed a number of successful exhibitions both in the UK and abroad. Irina says: “The main themes of my work are time, fragility and death. In my work, especially the portraiture, I want the viewer to connect with these themes. To me, my self-portraits are not really portraits – they are moments of self- reflection which capture a momentary stillness in time. Doing a self-portrait isn’t to make yourself look beautiful, it’s to look at the human condition through yourself, and encourage the viewer to reflect upon herself/himself and their different emotional and psychological states, and it is this moment of self-reflection that I would like to share with the viewer.”

KATARZYNA BULKA-MATLACZ:

Warsaw-born Katarzyna graduated from The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1991 and has been exhibiting her surreal, captivating sculptures for over 30 years. Having undertaken work for global brands such as Kraft Foods, Credit Suisse and AXA, as well as exhibiting her work throughout Europe, she is now looking to expand her audience within the British art market. Using the ancient technique of lost wax casting, Katarzyna’s fascinating sculptures combine elements of surrealism, grotesque and fairytale, drawing inspiration from artists such as Henry Moore and Salvador Dali. Katarzyna says: “These elements are used to show the complexity of the human condition, man’s ambitions and limitations, his advantages and drawbacks. Depicting animals, humans and ordinary objects in unusual situations, Katarzyna’s sculptures are imbued with hidden meanings, metaphor, subtexts and secrets and she says: “I have a desire to awake the imagination of my audience and provide them with food for thought.”

KIM BYUNGKWAN: Based in Seoul, South Korea, Kim studied art at Hansung University before going on to build a career as an artist. Kim’s work primarily seeks to disrupt everyday familiarity – he is renowned for breaking up his portrait and fgurative paintings with scribbles and smears of paint, mainly over the subjects' faces. For Kim, familiarity is a form of habitual vison which essentially creates comfort, but in doing so, shuts down other opportunities and limits possibility. Kim says: “My work is trying to destroy, tear up, and reconstruct habitual vision so that our vision can be extended to other images. The unfamiliar image I draw works to break up the way we see things usually. I think that one of the important functions of art is to show a new vision to the world.”

LINDA CHARLES: Born in the South East of England, Linda has always had an overwhelming attraction to colour, saying: “I always felt it to be something tangible both physically and spiritually.” She frst developed an interest in abstract art during her years studying textiles and fashion at Scotland’s Herriot Watt University, and has enjoyed a successful career as an artist working with prestigious galleries across the country. Using collected materials, Linda structures patterns, texture and colour to emerge organically in her work. She says: “My aim is to bring the feel of the street and its overdose of colour and design indoors. My inspiration comes from things often overlooked and taken for granted. I love raw beauty, peeling paint, old weather-beaten doors and window frames on buildings, rusted metals and old tarnished mirrors and mixing the old with the new. I like to work on distressed surfaces with multiple layers to create a depth to my art.”

MALCOLM BARRETT: Born in Chester, now living in Devon, Malcolm is a self-taught fne art sculptor. With no formal training in art, Malcolm honed his skills in sculpture through unconventional methods, originally training to repair car bodies as a professional panel beater and sprayer. After this, he worked in a boatyard, becoming profcient in all aspects of fbreglassing and mould making. It was these two jobs that helped Malcolm achieve his dreams of becoming an artist. Using car body fller, fbreglass and rubber moulds Malcolm creates his uniquely smooth and tactile sculptures. Malcolm says: “My journey into sculpture started many years ago. I was unaware at the time that the trade that I had decided to train in would lead me into the sculpture that I create today. I hope my artwork makes people smile.”

NIGEL HUMPHRIES: Born and bred in Stoke-on-Trent, painting has forever been a big part of Nigel’s life and he always has a number of pieces in production at any one time. His oil on canvas works are inspired by comic books, movies, soundtracks, music and all things nostalgic. In this way, Nigel hopes to spread happiness through his work. Nigel says: “My style is a combination of many influences. Being self-taught I have studied many artists particularly the techniques of the Old Masters which I have adapted to suit my own way of working. My style, I think, would be considered as quite traditional but with a quirky element. I suppose my main aim is to bring a smile to people’s faces. Nostalgia is a driving influence in all of my work.”

OTTILIA AVIRAM: Ottilia has enjoyed an award-winning career in design and advertising, working with both commercial clients and private customers, however her true passion is collage. Combining carefully sourced vintage ephemera with hand- drawn illustrations, she creates intricate, unique canvases which evoke a sense of a bygone era. Each work is structured and sketched before the collage is created using a range of mixed media techniques and materials including screen printing, image transfer and hand cut collage using gold leaf, resin and foil. Ottilia says: “I would hope that the viewer would see the intricate details behind each collage, as well as having a moment of nostalgia. The viewer would have a moment to be transported to a different era and experience a past that they can be part of. Images that might be forgotten will be seen. It will be a momentary escape from the digital world as each piece is hand created using traditional techniques.”

Inspired by artists such as Giovanni Bellini and Cosmé Tura their work conveys a sophisticated and translucent hyper-realism in which pop style meets the latest trends of ‘new fguration’. Their works feature in many important private collections around the world and have been exhibited at a number of prestigious venues. The duo have been commissioned by high profle brands such as Swarovski, Fendi Casa and Dolce & Gabbana among others. Casagrande & Recalcati say: “We want our paintings to convey the sensation of dreams. Just as in dreams we would like that the ultimate sensation is one of mystery, the more everything seems explained, narrated, magnifed as if under the lens of an investigator, the more the fnal meanings of what the viewers see escape them, remaining remote and elusive.”

TABULA RASA BY PLUME: Plume is the Birmingham based artist collective featuring Ernest Otoo and Andy Pilsbury. Plume artwork focuses on organic processes which are predominately presented through digital media in order to create visually stunning work. The works featured in IN:SIGHT come from Plume’s successful Tabula Rasa project, a multifaceted art project combining high-speed photography, moving images and ethereal soundscapes to create surreal flourishing landscapes. Their work is a voyeuristic look at the hypnotic behaviour of different coloured inks in water. Plume say: “The process starts with getting all the lighting set up around the fshtank. After cleaning to make sure we don’t pick up any blemishes, it’s flled with water. Then Ernest drops the inks in and builds a composition while Andy starts shooting. The fnal stage involves vetting the images to select what we want for a collection then some slight re-touching to enhance the images and bring out colours and vibrancy.”

TOM BIRD:

Born in Wellington, Tom is currently living in Birmingham. Having studied an Art Foundation course in Birmingham before going on to gain a First Class BA Hons degree at Birmingham City University, Tom’s work seeks to give the viewer a new, different perspective through the medium of digital photography. His photographs often highlight the beauty that can be found in industrial settings such as the Queensway tunnel in Birmingham city centre. Tom says: “Most of my work removes the subject from its environment allowing pure focus in its entirety of that subject. Allowing colour, texture, form and shape to take precedence in the piece so that the subject almost falls to the back of the mind allowing its aesthetic to take over. It is this impact I want to have on a viewer, an alternative vision that they perhaps had never seen before.”
