THE NEWSLETTER ABOUT YOUR HEALTH AND CARING FOR YOUR BODY
A s often as we can, my wife and I try to plan a big vacation with our kids. It’s difficult to top the feelings of gratitude and contentment that come naturally as you explore a fresh new destination alongside your family, so we make our getaways a pretty regular thing. But this summer, we decided to put together a much bigger voyage than usual. After a journey through Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Hungary, and India, I returned late last July, completely refreshed, though still buzzing from the excitement of the trip. Even now, I can’t stop thinking about it. Our Recent Month-Long Trip Overseas A EUROPEAN ADVENTURE
for something like 200 years, and I realized that I’d been there before, 20 years earlier! We had just popped in to find a nice dress for our daughter, and a flood of memories from my previous time there suddenly popped back into my mind. Like much of Europe, it was almost as if it was preserved in amber, all these old ways and buildings somehow coexisting with the modern world.
I experienced a similar kind of shock in Zurich. When we landed there at noon, with only two days to check out the city, we immediately began bustling around, trying to cram in all the sights. To expedite the process, we got on a tour bus, where this incredibly experienced guide explained everything we were seeing in five different languages to accommodate everyone in attendance. When he pulled over next to a shopping complex and told everyone that they needed to go inside and check it out,
It had been about 20 years since I’d last been to Europe, so I saw everything with fresh eyes. Between the picturesque, winding paths of Zurich, the pre-medieval charm of Salzburg, and the old, elaborate architecture of Vienna, I was thrilled to just walk around and take it all in. People keep asking me what my “favorite” part of the trip was, but as cliche as it sounds, it’s impossible to pick just one — it was just landmark after beautiful landmark. We experienced all these new sights
many of us didn’t really believe it — we were in a hurry and didn’t have time to shop! But we took his advice and went inside, only to see one of the oldest Roman bath houses in the world smack- dab in the middle of the complex, preserved in plexiglass. It seems everywhere you go in Europe, there’s some hidden beauty to be found if you just look around. It was an ambitious project and probably the biggest trip we’ve ever gone on as a family. So it felt good to come home. But honestly, I just feel grateful to be able to share these kinds of experiences with my wife and kids, traveling around the world and connecting with each other on the deepest imaginable level. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
and sounds without a single moment to get bored. Though we took a month off, we spent only the first week in Europe and the rest of the time with our family in India, so it was truly a whirlwind attempting to fit everything we wanted to do and see into our schedules. It’s always funny the things that stick out in your mind. Though I’d been to Vienna two decades before, I could hardly remember anything from my previous visit. But the entire time I was there, I kept feeling this sense of deja vu, or the feeling that there were memories just out of reach at all the locations we visited. Once, we went into an Austrian shop that had been selling well-made jackets and dresses

HOW TO BOOST YOUR RETIREMENT FUNDS When Your Funds Are Lower Than They Should Be Having money saved is crucial for adults aged 50 or older who plan to retire in the near future. Some people are prepared for retirement, having saved a sufficient amount throughout their lives. However, there are people who, despite having tried to save, come up short in their retirement funds. This can send them into a panic. Women account for the largest percentage of people who don’t have enough money in their retirement savings by the time they reach the age of 50. A survey produced by the nonprofit Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies shows that many women who reach retirement age will not have adequate funds to support themselves. Despite having a higher savings rate, the average amount women have saved at the age of 50 is about $35,000, compared to $120,000 for men. What’s the reason behind this? According to the survey, women often have a large gap in their financial savings at some point in their lives. They are more likely to work part time or stop going to work to take care of family members in need. By working less, women tend to earn less money, which prevents them
from putting away sufficient funds for their retirement. This also affects whether or not they are covered by their employer’s retirement benefits, since most employees are required to be full-time in order to receive any benefits. If you’re nearing retirement age, don’t fret — you still have options available to you. If you’re working, look into your company’s retirement plan, especially if they offer a 401(k). According to the IRS, those who qualify (i.e., someone who joins the plan and is 50 years or older) can contribute up to $24,500 a year. To learn more about what options are available, it’s crucial you speak to a planning specialist. By working with someone who understands retirement, you’ll create a solid plan and ensure that you successfully enter and enjoy your retirement.
BOOK A CARIBBEAN CRUISE Safe Sailing This Hurricane Season
After last year’s devastating storm season, would-be tropical travelers are undoubtedly hesitant about purchasing those discounted plane tickets to the Caribbean Basin. No one wants to face a possible evacuation during their vacation — or worse, be forced to weather a hurricane at a beachfront resort. If you want the most bang for your buck while enjoying the turquoise waters of the Caribbean this fall, consider booking a cruise.
out of a storm’s path with ease. For all their ferocity, hurricanes move slowly across the Atlantic and have relatively predictable trajectories. Meanwhile, modern cruise ships carry the most sophisticated weather-tracking instruments, allowing them to bypass even small storms and inclement weather. FLEXIBILITY IS A MUST The flipside of this ability to dodge storms is the fact that your ship may not be able to stick to its original itinerary. You may have to anchor at an island you weren’t expecting to or miss out on seeing a port you were supposed to visit. If you have your heart set on seeing a specific location, cruise travel this time of year may not be for you. But if you are simply looking for a safe, affordable vacation to a beautiful region, then it doesn’t much matter which white-sanded beach you wake up to next. While unpredictable weather will always be a concern for any vacation, the safety and variety cruises offer make them great options for anyone looking for a Caribbean getaway before the holiday season. So if you have a flexible schedule and a healthy sense of adventure, it’s time to call your travel agent, pack your sunscreen and bathing suit, and head to paradise!
Cruise-ship travel is a fun and adventurous way to explore any time of year. After all, what could be more magical than a floating hotel room where you fall asleep in one country and wake up in another? This charming mobility is also what makes cruise travel the safest option for visiting the Caribbean and the coast of Mexico this time of year. SAFETY AND SAVINGS Much like resorts and airfare, cruise lines discount their Caribbean fares significantly during peak hurricane season, from August to October. However, unlike a traditional hotel, these massive ships have the luxury of navigating

HOW TO RELIEVE THAT PESKY PELVIC PAIN DAMAGE TO THE SACROILIAC JOINT OCCURS MORE OFTEN IN FEMALE PATIENTS
While there are millions of Americans who experience pain in their pelvic area, most are unaware that pelvic pain related to the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) occurs far more often in female patients than male patients. Dysfunction in the SIJ can produce many painful symptoms due to the joint’s connection to the pelvis, which transmits and absorbs forces between the spine and the lower body. Because the pelvis is responsible for providing attachment sites for 35 different muscles as well as protection for the abdominal organs, any kind of severe trauma — or even smaller, repetitive stresses — can cause a lot of pain in the lower limbs. What’s more interesting (and frustrating for patients) is that pain stemming from damage to the bones, ligaments, muscles, or nerves in the SIJ often relocates or refers to another part of the body. So, even if you have damaged your SIJ, you may actually feel the pain somewhere else in your body! That’s why, here at Synergy Therapeutic Group, we spend a lot of time trying to accurately pinpoint the cause of your pelvic pain by paying close attention to your symptoms. GET BACK TO L I V I NG YOUR L I FE
Patients with SIJ injuries
may experience pain in the lower extremities or back,
stiffness, and instability. Females are more prone to these kinds of symptoms due to the more mobile anatomy
of their pelvises. Additionally, if our patients are mothers, then many of them will have experienced trauma to their pelvic baskets/ slings, the muscles responsible for maintaining pelvic integrity. Of course, this probably doesn’t seem like big news to the moms out there; pelvic pain and childbirth often go hand in hand. However, SIJ dysfunction is often misdiagnosed as a type of pelvic floor disorder and may end up going unidentified and untreated. Because SIJ injuries are both so prevalent and complex, we ensure that each patient receives an individualized treatment plan — one that explores the source of their pain rather than merely treating the symptoms. If you would like more information about SIJ dysfunction or would like to schedule an appointment, please give us a call at (618) 529-4360.

traditional rehab, my sciatica pain had reached the boiling point. I could not live like this anymore. The
pain had started years ago just bothering me on long car rides. Within the last year it bothered me on short rides, just sitting in a chair at home, and continuously all night — having to adjust my sleeping position when pain woke me up. “I saw on Facebook the Back Pain Clinic post at Synergy. My aunt had done therapy here years ago and they helped her! So I came. After one treatment, I slept all through the night and woke up thinking I had overslept. I was still on my back — NO PAIN!! Why didn’t I come here years ago?!” –Marilyn M.
“I can get up easier. Not as much pain as before. Hope to get pain-free.
“I can do chores now. I can walk better. I sleep a lot better — used to wake up every hour. Now I can just wake up once and then sleep the rest of the night. I am getting better at my steadiness — I was weak in my back. I had back surgery twice.
“I can stand better — in the summer, I hope to be walking more!”
