The Benefits of Using SPF Daily

The Benefits of Using SPF Daily The purpose of sunscreen is to shield the body from Ultra-Violet rays which have several harmful effects like sunburn, ageing, pigmentation, and skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis, damaging collagen, and elastin fibers. This damage causes increased production of abnormal elastin. The unusual amounts of elastin result in the production of enzymes called metalloproteinase. These enzymes, which rebuild damaged collagen, often malfunction, and degrade the collagen, resulting in incorrectly rebuilt skin. As this process is repeated with daily UVA exposure, the incorrectly rebuilt skin forms wrinkles, and the depleted collagen results in leathery skin. Skin cancer cases have increased by 45% in the last decade. Skin cancer is the 5th most common cancer and is the biggest killer in the 15- 34 age group. Melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer kills 7 people a day. But there is some good news, 86% of skin cancers are preventable by adopting sun safe habits and using broad Spectrum SPF daily. UV rays are separated into different types, determined by their wavelengths. • UVA (320-400nm) These rays penetrate deeper into the skin and damage collagen, resulting in premature aging and wrinkles. It may also damage DNA and thus play a role in the development of skin cancer. UVA rays are not visible in the damage they cause but they’re extremely detrimental to skin health. • UVB (290 -320nm) Shorter wavelengths with more energy than UVA. They cause damage to the superficial layers of the skin, resulting in reddening of the skin (sunburn) and DNA damage, which can also contribute to skin cancer. UVB rays are visible in the damage they cause, such a sunburn and accelerated aging. • HEV / Blue Light (450-500nm) The most harmful of all rays are surrounding us every day. They are emitted through our devices (phones, laptops….) and cause inflammation, pigmentation and weaking of the skin barrier by damaging the skin’s collagen, elastin, and H/A supplies. HEV rays are invisible and can cause extreme skin stress and free radical damage.

• Uneven thickening of the skin called solar elastosis, resulting in coarse wrinkling and yellow discoloration. • Blood vessels become thinner, leading to spider veining (telangiectasias) on the face.

• Pigment changes such as freckles and age spots. • White spots appear on the body as melanocytes are progressively destroyed. • Skin cancer – Too much UV can damage cell DNA which can cause cells to start growing out of control.

• Premature ageing – breakdown of Collagen. • 90% of skin changes are due to UV exposure

What to Look Out For When Buying A SPF When looking for an SPF, the best formulas to go for are broad spectrum SPFs – they protect against both UVA and UVB rays that come from the sun. Look out for both Physical and Chemical , packed with antioxidants, non-irritating and breathable formulations such as the Solarium or DIBI Milano UV protection products from ALFAPARF. The DIBI Milano products that contain SPF are Acid Infusion, Defence Solution and Pro Cellular. Physical sunscreen are fine particles of minerals that sit on the surface of the skin and reflect, as well as absorb, UV radiation. Mineral actives alone often offer less protection from damaging UVA radiation than chemical filters therefore offering both is best for full protection from UV rays. The best Physical ingredients are Titanium dioxide and Zinc as they work by scattering the sun’s rays, preventing potentially damaging ultraviolet radiation. It won’t break down when exposed to sun and it’ll hold up through sweat and swimming for longer. Chemical sunscreen contains organic (carbon-based) compounds that create a chemical reaction and work by changing UV rays into heat, then releasing that heat from the skin. Sun Protection Facts • All the hard work you’re doing with anti-aging peptides and the rest of your skincare routine. You’re basically undoing it all if you don’t wear an SPF during the day. SPF has been scientifically proven to reduce the early onset of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots, so make sure to add it to your routine! • Solarium and DIBI Milano SPFs are packed with an array of antioxidants and hydrating ingredients and care for the skin as it protects. So, whilst your SPF is working hard to protect against UVA and UVB rays, the antioxidants inside are also helping to defend against the free radicals and environmental aggressors that we are all exposed to daily. • Wearing an SPF decreases your risk of developing skin cancer. Although it may sound scary, it’s the reality, and wearing an SPF massively reduces your melanoma risk and any damage to your body that may come with it. • SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays. So, the difference between 30 and 50 is about 1 percent.
