The Howard School

Thank you for your interest in The Howard School.

We have a new exciting state of the art Science & Technology building which will be opening soon. As a school we are investing in a cutting edge digital strategy, which will include every student having access to a leased digital device. We are a community based on mutual respect and where we treat each other with dignity. We are passionate that all our students will be highly successful adults, who contribute to their local and global communities. We are acutely aware of our moral duty as educators, to give young people the qualifications and experiences they need, to have the best life chances.

The Howard School is consistently one of the most successful non-selective, non- denominational boy’s schools nationally. As a school we enhance the life chances of our young people by maximising their educational achievement. Our local and national reputation is excellent; we support our students to make outstanding academic and personal progress. We are a school where GCSE, A-Level and BTEC outcomes are consistently strong, both locally and in the context of the national picture. We are a traditional school with clear values and practices, with good discipline, smart uniform including a blazer, high quality teaching and a house and rewards system. We offer a warm and well ordered environment, with high expectations of our whole school community. We know that young people learn best in a structured and purposeful environment and this is what we have created at The Howard School. This is enhanced by our outstanding pastoral and careers programmes and our many extra curricular activities.

Enrichment

Activities

There are many opportunities for students to be involved in enriching activities outside of the ‘traditional’ curriculum. Students in the past have had the opportunity to explore locations in Italy, Amsterdam, New York and Iceland. Many more local visits occur to galleries and theatres in London, Margate and Canterbury. Students are also involved in the Duke of Edinburgh award and we have plans to launch a ‘World Challenge’ experience. We have outstanding and diverse PE and Sports clubs. The Howard School is committed to providing high quality careers education, information, advice, guidance and work-related learning, including work experience. Our priority is to equip students to manage the choices, changes and transitions affecting their future lives. Our careers programme is designed to meet the needs of all of our students. It is differentiated to ensure progression through appropriate activities, therefore strengthening motivation, aspirations and attainment. It is tailored to meet the needs of individual students. 06

The Howard School is proud to have achieved the Rights Respecting Schools Award at Gold Level, one of the few secondary schools in Kent and Medway to gain this prestigious accolade. The Gold award is at the highest level and only granted to schools that have fully embedded the principles of the Convention into their ethos and curriculum. We are proud to have maintained the Gold award which offers an external validation of The Howard School. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is based on an analysis of what children need in order to thrive. These needs can be grouped into four categories:

• To survive as a fit and healthy person • To be protected from harm and abuse • To develop physically, mentally and socially • To participate as an active citizen

Getting

Results

We are proud to be the most successful non- selective, non-denominational boy’s school in the South East. All groups make good progress so that students’ attainment, as measured by the proportion gaining five 9-4 grades including English and Mathematics, is in line with the national average, and above average when measured across a wider range of subjects or solely against boys progress nationally and in the South East. Our students make good progress from their relative starting points. Attainment in vocational courses is above average, and in line with national averages at A level. We are a consistently high achieving, well disciplined and happy school. Awhole-school emphasis on developing students’ communication skills means that our students are confident and articulate in sharing their opinions. Reading is promoted often, such as in tutorial sessions, and students’ good literacy skills are evident in the quality of their written work. The school steadily reduces the attainment gap between students eligible for the pupil premium and others as they move through the school.

School

Uniform

A high standard of personal appearance is expected from all our students. Anyone arriving at school in non-uniform clothing can be sent home to change or to Pastoral Support where uniform can be borrowed for the day. Students may not wear jewellery to school, and adornments relating to any piercings are forbidden.

All students in Years 7-11 must wear:

• A black blazer with school badge and year ribbon • Plain white shirt with collar and school tie • Black or dark grey trousers (not skinny fit, denims, cords or jean style) • Black shoes (not trainers, sports shoes, fabric or suede) • Jumper, if worn, must be a black Howard jumper with school badge • Plain black, grey or navy socks • Belts, if worn, should be plain black without large buckles.

PE and Games Kit:

• Embroidered polo shirt, shorts and socks, rugby shirt • Embroidered sweatshirt (optional)

Please note that caps and hooded tops are not allowed and must not be worn on the school site. If they are found, they are likely to be confiscated and a parent/carer may need to collect them from school. The

Admissions and

Extra Information

The arrangements for coordinated admissions in Medway will be set out in detail in the Medway LA booklet for parents/carers ‘Admission to Secondary School’, a copy of which will be available from the school or from the Admissions Team at Medway LA. The Planned Admission Number (PAN) is 250. Offers of places will be posted to parents/carers by the LA on behalf of the school. Places must first be offered to those children with statements of special education needs where the school is named. If the number of preferences for The Howard School received via the Medway coordinated scheme is more than the number of places available, places are allocated in the following priority order: i. Looked After Children or previously looked after children as defined in the Medway coordinated admission scheme. ii. At the time of application where a child has a brother/sister including adopted siblings, stepbrother/sister, foster brother/sister and those who live as a brother/sister in the same house currently attending the school and will still be on roll at the time of entry. iii. Child’s health reasons. Medical evidence must be provided which demonstrates a specific health reason which requires a child to attend the preferred school. iv. Where the child resides within the access area. Priority given to those nearest the school.

v. Nearness of child’s home. Distance will be measured by the shortest available safe walking route between home and school as measured by Medway Council’s Geographical Information System.

We are a part of The Howard Academy Trust - a larger community of schools with a shared moral purpose; to make a positive difference to the lives of the young people in our community.

As a Trust, we currently comprise of Medway secondary and primary schools. We have future growth plans extending into North Kent and have been selected by the DfE and Kent County Council to open a new secondary presumption free school in Margate in September 2023. Learning and growth are at the heart of THAT ethos. We recognise and value the unique talents and expertise within our community and aim to create a culture of dignity, respect and ambition, where all can thrive.
