Introduction
Dear Parents/Carers,
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome back the Year 11s. We know this has been a very difficult time for all of our students and some may feel very anxious about the outcome of their GCSE results in 2022. We are committed in ensuring that every student leaves with the outcomes they need to go progress next year to our Sixth form, College or Apprenticeship. We know that every minute of every lesson will count for our Year 11 cohort. We want to reassure you we have a comprehensive programme of support planned for our students to ensure they achieve the best outcomes possible.
This document includes information on the additional measures we will provide during the year to support our students plus details of key contacts and important dates.
Please do contact the school (Ms Jaiyeoba in the first instance) if you have any queries or concerns about the forthcoming academic year and we will do our best to support you and your son.

The THS11 Offer
At The Howard, we are committed to providing the very best support possible to our Year 11 students, both academically and pastorally. Our support strategies include the following:
Intervention Groups Throughout 2021/22 academic year, we will run a number of additional revision classes and interventions. Many students already attend booster sessions in core subjects during form time. After school intervention classes will be offered in selected subjects until Christmas. Focused intervention groups in all subjects will begin in January after the mock examinations. Parent Evenings and Reports There are two consultation evenings this year, allowing parents / carers to discuss a student’s progress. In addition there will be tracker reports issued at Christmas and Easter breaks. Academic Review Meetings (ARM) Selected students will receive a one to one meeting with a member of staff to explore their ambitions, current grades, attitude to learning and any additional support needs. Study Skills Workshops – Students Students that will benefit from additional support will be offered the opportunity to attend study skills workshops that will cover planning for revision and an introduction to a range of revision techniques and motivation. Saturday Morning Maths The Maths department will offer Saturday morning revision classes in the run up to the GCSE exams in May. Easter Revision Sessions Students requiring support will be invited, by letter, to attend revision classes during the Easter break in many subjects and during May half term in subjects with examination dates in June. Pastoral Care Students will continue to benefit from exceptional pastoral care, led by Ms Jaiyeoba as Head of Year. Ms Jaiyeoba has an excellent understanding of students’ needs and supported by Mr Daburn will guide our Year 11 cohort through the challenging year ahead. Mentoring We monitor the progress and well-being of all our students closely. Where we believe students will benefit, they may be offered a mentor to provide regular one to one support. Study Skills Evening Parents, carers and students are invited to attend an evening where information will be provided on how to revise, revision resources will be issued by departments and workshops will be available for parents to attend.
Study Skills Programme As part of the CDW programme in form time students will participate in a comprehensive study skills course equipping them with the tools to plan and carry out their revision effectively.

Why Parents/Carers Are So Important It has been shown that parental support is eight times more important in determining a student’s academic success than social class. Students spend 15% of their time at school per year, and 85% of their time at home. Please don’t feel like you have to be an expert in any of the subjects your son is studying in order to make a real difference. There are simple, practical things that you can do, all of which can be summarised in three key concepts: support them, encourage them and take an interest in what they’re doing . In addition to this, it is essential you make sure your son maintains excellent attendance. Missing school is a common cause of underachievement and can also be a causal factor in stress and anxiety when students return to school and have to catch up with missed work.
How much work should my son be doing outside of school?
Students are set regular independent study in the GCSE years. Each piece of homework is designed to take between 30 minutes and 60 minutes. Your son should be working for around 2 hours beyond the school day, whether that be in school, in the ELC or at home. If independent study does not take this amount of time, students should be spending the remaining time on constructive activities such as reading their lesson notes, making corrections to previous work, reflecting on their learning or making revision resources. If they tell you they do not have any work today, please encourage them to engage in one of these activities. Independent Study Students who study outside of lesson time on a regular basis will achieve significantly higher grades. To support students, staff will set regular independent study tasks that should be completed and returned in a timely manner.
We will monitor the completion of independent study and we will inform parents / carers of any concerns raised. There is an after-school provision for students to study quietly in the ELC each day.

How Can
Parents Help?
• Provide a suitable quiet area to study. • Be positive – give praise for all their hard work at every opportunity to build confidence. • Promote a balance between academic studies and other activities each week. • Encourage them to take regular exercise or participate in sporting activities to relieve tension and stress. • Feed their brains - check they are eating regularly (breakfast, lunch & dinner) and have a healthy diet. • Make home life as calm and stable as possible. • Encourage sensible sleep patterns – research suggests young people need 8-9 hours sleep every night. • Make sure there are no distractions when studying – phones, tablets, games consoles, TV etc. • Reduce time in front of a screen. • Encourage them to write in their own words, not just copy from the internet. • Help them plan their time: a weekly time table with slots for independent study and revision for each subject will help them focus (don’t forget to schedule in plenty of social time too). • Make sure revision is completed in small chunks – a session should last no longer than 30 minutes with breaks in between. • Suggest using a range of revision techniques rather than sticking to one method – note taking, hi-lighting, flash cards, quizzes, mind maps, text a friend, post-its, memory journeys etc. • Encourage study buddies. • Check they have the revision books / resources needed for each subject. • Be encouraging, a good listener and show understanding of what they are going through, help them deal with their emotions and feelings.
