A celebration of a life well lived Our aim is to help you achieve a meaningful and personalised funeral that is a celebration of a life well lived. We appreciate every service is individual and are happy to discuss ways in which personal tributes and reflections of your loved one can be a focal point of the funeral service. We accommodate funeral services for any culture and ethnicity as well as alternative forms of farewell.

An idyllic and peaceful setting Set in 8.5 acres, The Oaks Crematorium is surrounded by beautiful ancient semi-natural woodland and wildflower meadow, providing a picturesque setting for the Crematorium building which has been sensitively designed. As well as creating a space that is relevant for all cultures, ages and beliefs, it provides a tranquil sanctuary for the bereaved, inspired by its natural setting. The low level oak cladding and flint walls, combined with a green ‘living’ sedum roof give the building the appearance of rising from its wildflower meadow setting.

Built to the highest environmental standards The building utilises the latest techniques in cremation and clean air technology to prevent pollution to the air and surrounding environment. Low level energy efficient lighting minimises light pollution from the site and a green sedum ‘living’ roof provides additional habitat for wildlife. A sustainable heating and cooling solution is used throughout the Crematorium building, reducing its energy demand and environmental footprint.

A site of importance for nature conservation The grounds of crematorium are home to an ancient semi-natural woodland, designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC). We work with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to create additional habitats for wildlife. We are proud of our sustainability and conservation achievements including a wildflower meadow and mound area that has allowed a species-rich habitat to develop. These areas support a range of insects including butterflies and bumblebees. In the woodland pond, rare floating club rush thrive and birds are utilising our bird boxes. Additionally, our bee hives are doing well in partnership with our Local Flavours supplier, Sinah Common Honey. The tree planting and landscaping blends seamlessly with the woodland surroundings and a tranquil memorial garden and wildflower meadow provide a haven for pollinators like bees and other wildlife.

Services & facilities On arrival

The main public entrance is identified by the floating structure of the porte cochere. Once in the fully glazed entrance lobby, you will find restroom facilities and a waiting area which offers a comfortable space to wait with views across the woodland. Free parking is provided immediately in front of the building for 90 cars (including disabled spaces). We also have 6 electric car charging points.

Service hall The wonderfully spacious double height service hall has floor to ceiling windows with beautiful views across a planted courtyard and ancient semi-natural woodland beyond. The service hall has individual seating for 86 people, with additional standing room for a further 50 at the side and rear of the hall. The glazed vestibule offers additional standing room with an integrated audio and visual feedback system so that everyone can see, hear and experience the service taking place. Using all of the above areas allows approximately 200 people to be accommodated at any one time.

Flower courtyard Following the service, you will be led directly into the flower courtyard where floral tributes are displayed under a sheltered canopy. The focal point of the flower courtyard is a large water feature where the subtle sound of trickling water adds to the calmness and tranquillity of the area. From here you may walk through to the memorial gardens, wild flower meadow and woodland glade for further peace and reflection.

Music and visual life tributes The music played at the funeral is an important choice and for many it remains an abiding memory. Music does not have to be limited to classical pieces or a hymn. Favourite pop songs, musicals and even music recorded by a family member can help personalise the funeral service. Wesley multi media The Oaks Crematorium has joined tradition with technology and has the Wesley Media system which provides an extensive music library with multi media screens in both the service hall and vestibule area. The state of the art system provides video/audio playback, recording and live web casting facilities. Music selection The Wesley Media library covers all styles and genres, ensuring the music you require will be available. Wesley Media can help you select the appropriate track or even arrange for recordings of personal performances or very old recordings to be placed on the system. Holding pictures A special picture of your loved one can be a lovely way to personalise your service and can be shown on screen during the service. Alternatively you may wish to use an image from our library, ranging from national flags to soft landscape scenes. Visual life tribute A personal visual life tribute is the ideal way of adding an extremely personal touch to the funeral service. A combination of family photos, images and home video of your loved one is then overlaid with favourite music from the Wesley Media library.

Webcasting of services A live broadcast of the service can be transmitted securely over the internet to invited guests, allowing absent family and friends to view the service from anywhere in the world. Webcast audio and video images can also be recorded and copied on to a professionally edited DVD/USB to share with family and friends.

Live music All forms of live music are welcome and our team will be pleased to offer any advice or help that may be required. A digital piano/organ and high quality Bose sound system is provided for live performances. The provision of an organist is available on request. Audio and video recording The funeral service audio or video can be recorded on to a professionally edited DVD/USB as a personal keepsake.

Cremated remains and memorials The final resting place of cremated remains is an extremely important decision and careful consideration should be given to all options available. To help with this process we can hold cremated remains for up to three months free of charge, allowing you time to think about how you wish to remember your loved one. We have a number of peaceful and tranquil areas within the grounds for you to choose a fitting memorial, and where cremated remains rest; including landscaped memorial gardens, a woodland glade and memorial mounds. Stone memorial orbs Each orb comes with a granite inscribed memorial plaque with gold or silver leaf inscription and can hold from one to four sets of cremated remains within a special steel casket inside. Alternatively, these orbs can also be used as a memorial for scattered cremated remains. Using natural Cumbrian limestone, the stone memorial orbs are designed to weather and age to create the established look of ancient stones amongst the various plants and flowers. Ornamental memorial orbs

Ornamental memorial orbs continue the theme of nature with a choice of elegant designs that can be inscribed and placed within the memorial gardens. These are used as an individual memorial or for complimenting an existing stone or woodland orb.

Woodland memorial orbs Each orb comes with a granite inscribed memorial plaque with gold or silver leaf inscription and can hold from one to four sets of cremated remains within a special steel casket inside. Alternatively, these orbs can also be used as a memorial for scattered cremated remains. Crafted from sustainable woodland timber and natural windfall sources from woodland locations nationwide, each orb is unique providing an original memorial. As the orb becomes established within the woodland it will become home to mosses and insects, contributing to the wildlife and health of the woodland environment.

Memorial scattering area A location to scatter your loved ones, there is no charge if the cremation took place at The Oaks. If you wish to use this facility for anyone cremated elsewhere a fee is applied. A member of the team will be there to support you on the day you choose to scatter your loved one. A moment of reflection is available during the scattering please enquire for more information and ideas.

Memorial benches Our range of commemorative benches, made from high quality Chiltern stone and natural timber, provide a restful place for you to reflect and remember your loved one. The memorial bench collection has a unique feature for holding cremated remains as well as a number of options for personal inscription.

Acorn obelisk memorial plaques Natural oak obelisks with a distinctive acorn design have been placed within various areas of the grounds as focal points to visit and remember. A variety of wooden memorial plaque options are available to be placed on the obelisk with a personal inscription.

Memorial mounds The southern aspect of our grounds have been set aside to develop a concept of memorial mounds. The location where the mounds have been created evokes a sense of ancient burial barrows common to the area and surrounding counties. The memorial mounds (along with various memorial options and orbs) are currently being designed and form phase two of our development at The Oaks.

Book of remembrance The book of remembrance is a permanent memorial with a page for every day of the year, within the book of remembrance room. It is a hand crafted volume of richly bound books in which names are commemorated by skilled calligraphers. The name can then be enhanced with personal text, motifs, designs and badges that may have significance to your loved one or the family. The book can be viewed daily and is open on the current day’s date, so any memorial entries made can always been seen on each anniversary.

FAQs

Q: Can I witness the placing of the coffin into the cremator? A: Yes – for safety reasons numbers are limited and up to six people can be permitted to witness. Q: Can I tour the facilities at any time? A: Yes – the memorial gardens, wildflower meadow, woodland glade and memorial mounds all have free access during normal opening hours. The service hall and crematory area however is with the permission and guidance of the team only. Q: Is the ground consecrated? A: No, any faith can be cremated and cremated remains scattered/buried here and it does not matter where you live, the charges are the same. However, individual graves can be blessed at the time of burial. Q: Are the cremated remains really that of my loved one? A: Yes – all cremations are completed individually in accordance with the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) Guiding Principles for Cremation. Each cremation service has a unique identification number and label which follows the deceased through the whole cremation process. Q: What happens to the cremated remains? A: The cremated remains are available 48 hours after the funeral unless otherwise specifically requested. They can be interred above ground in a memorial Orb or scattered within The Oaks grounds, which can be witnessed if desired. Various memorials are available, but ultimately what happens to them is the decision of the applicant for cremation. Q: How soon after the ceremony is the body cremated? A: Usually within a few hours but under guidelines drawn up by the ICCM always within 72 hours. This means the remains are cremated at the time which will cause the least environmental impact. Q: What happens to jewellery and any personal effects? A: All of the contents of the coffin are cremated alongwith the deceased in its entirety. Q: What is the definition of cremated remains/ashes? A: The Government definition of cremated remains is defined as all that is left in the cremation chamber after the cremation process. More FAQs can be found on our website.

Travelling South on A3 1. Head south on A3 and continue onto A3(M) signed for Portsmouth/Hayling Island. 2. Exit at junction 2, take the B2149 exit to Emsworth. 3. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto Dell Piece East/B2149. 4. At the next roundabout turn right and continue to follow the B2149 to Rowlands Castle/Emsworth. 5. After approx. 2 miles, go straight over first mini roundabout, at the next mini roundabout take the first exit onto Whichers Gate Road, B2148. Continue to follow B2148 to Emsworth. 6. After approx. 1.3 miles turn right into Bartons Road. The Oaks Crematorium entrance is approx. 0.3 miles on the right, just past the entrance to the Spire Portsmouth Hospital.

Travelling East or West on A27 1. Exit the A27 signed Havant/Hayling Island. 2. At the roundabout, follow the signs for Havant/Rowlands Castle, exiting onto Park Road South/B2149. Continue straight on and follow B2149 and signs for Havant Crematorium, over the bridge and straight over the next roundabout. 3. At the fourth set of pedestrian/traffic lights approx. 1.7 miles turn right onto Bartons Road. The Oaks Crematorium entrance is approx. 0.8 miles on the left after you pass the garden centre on the right. Rail Services Havant is the nearest main line train station located 1.7 miles away.
