Alexander Millar

Fascinated by the small details he saw in everyday life Alex would stand in awe at something as insignificant as an old man getting off a bike, a woman with bad hips struggling onto the bus, or the way a drunk would stand by the local pub negotiating a chip to land somewhere in the region of his mouth. He describes it all as a street dance, produced for him only and made what seemed ordinary and mundane quite fascinating. “I guess that is the whole premise of the work that I produce in that I still take delight in turning the 'ordinary' into something extraordinary. ‘A Time and A Place’, transports Millar's 'Youth and 'Young Manhood/Peaky Blinders' characters to iconic city locations throughout the UK and further afield, from the High Level Bridge in Newcastle to the Trocadero Gardens in Paris.The location of each painting is highly significant in his life and most see the introduction of female figures into these scenes. The places featured are very special to Alexander and include New York, Paris, London, Glasgow, Birmingham and Newcastle. Having built a reputation on painting traditional working class men in flat caps and old, baggy suits as he always loved painting wool and tweed, so portraying figures in the dress code of the 1920's and 30's was what partly inspired Alexander to paint these characters in well-know places.The old black and white photos from the 1930s of his Grandfather - showing him as a young dapper Dan, dressed in his finest for a night on the town also motivated Alexander to imagine his well-kent 'gadgies' as younger, romantic figures.

Jonathan Truss Supporting the conservation of many endangered species, Jonathan has raised thousands of pounds for wildlife causes. Frequently in the media spotlight, he has made over 100 television appearances and has been featured in many national and international magazines. He is a member of the prestigious American organization ‘The Society of Animal Artists’ and also the US-based ‘Artists for Conservation’, and his paintings have been sold through major auction houses, including Christies and Sotheby’s. Jonathan has won an impressive array of accolades for his artwork; recently he was a finalist in both the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year and the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year. Jonathan is also one of the co-authors of a major artbook entitled ‘How to Draw Wildlife’. “Nothing seems more natural or enjoyable to me than painting wildlife. Nature has already painted its masterpiece… it’s all the inspiration I need!”

Michael Parker "Having now found interest in colour relativity, I have changed my palette to a joyful set of colours bringing in violets, cadmium hues, reds, greens and blues to my paintings. My knives give me the opportunity to create a scene of abstract fragments depicting the scene but not in its perfect form. I paint in the 'plein air' as much as in my studio. I first start with an idea and draw the composition. Then I begin applying paint in large bold strokes to the background. My intention is to be deliberately strong and well placed with my strokes. I cannot go back. And what develops is there for the eye to behold. I work wet into wet and when entering my figures I have one chance – changing in mid-stream may ruin all that I have created in the background.I enjoy painting most human figures, animals, and also still life, But the horse is my favourite. I strive to achieve movement in my paintings, even within the static still lives, conjuring up the excitement of all life. Bathed in light from any particular angle. Having now won many local competitions throughout the South of England. I have moved on to also sell my work in print form".

Daniel Hooper

With an aim to make people think about their surroundings he notes that, whilst most people are alienated by phones and busy lives, they can still be transfixed by nature - highlighted by TV shows such as David Attenborough documentaries. “We’re on Planet Earth and nature is all around us, we just don’t see it,” he muses. When creating his artwork, Dan calls upon techniques from his construction background. By initially painting in blocks, he is able to slowly build layers up to add movement to the finished product. The end result, and the reaction from his audience, is what drives him to continue creating art.

Neil Dawson Reading newspapers and seeing images of faraway cities on TV instilled a passion for travel, which in turn became a spring board to creating his stunning artworks. Experiencing new cultures, surroundings and events, he photographed madly and widely and returned home to create amazing and vibrant international cityscapes which had become part of his own life experience. In addition to London these cities include Edinburgh, Paris, New York, Sydney and Venice. Painting in oil, the moods of his work changes from vibrant and dramatic to calm and serene as days unfold into night. Neil says “I am inspired by the energy and colour of cities. I love to paint iconic architecture and imagery - hoping to spark a connection with the viewer, recreating memories of happy times spent in these dynamic cities”.

Michael Sole Michael says he is striving to achieve a state of "Involuntaryism" a concept of the built up knowledge in the artist's hand is permitted to come through in an instinctive approach to the application of the materials in this case include oils, bitumen, PVA and emulsion. "'Involuntarylism' is the act of allowing the paint and gravity to create the painting itself. Involuntarylism is subject to the artist 'puppeteering' the paint, using built up knowledge and past experience, to create the final painting. The artist's involvement is purely to manipulate the paint and canvas so as to exaggerate as strongly as possible the resulting organic textures and marks. The whole idea of involuntarylism is allowing the paints characteristics to produce the marks, creating organic patterns, atmosphere and substantiation, allowing the painting to have a life of its own. However, this is not enough. Through the study of impressionism and the art of Van Gogh "the man - the artist" has recently become as important to me as the paint itself. To show the presence of the artist and to merge one with the other created the inspiration for this body of work."

Tony Black Having moved from Australia to Ireland and then Scotland, Tony eventually became a journalist in Edinburgh, writing his debut novel in 2009. The media storm that followed in Europe resulted in him writing two Gus Dury books a year and, almost burnt out, he retreated to Melbourne having banished his hero to Edinburgh. Returning to Scottish capital via Ireland and the Isle of Arran ten years later, Tony found he could happily re-connect with Gus Dury. “Gus eventually crowbarred his way back into my affections, and before I knew it a new novel was finished”. Tony’s latest book, the fifth in the series, is called Wrecked which he says is “the grittiest of the lot”! Other forays into historical and literary fiction only seemed to reveal the limitations of the form to Tony and just didn’t quell the urge to pursue his visual art more fully. He now paints every day, following a spontaneous style that, although at odds with the rigid pre-planning of his novel writing, seems to draw on many deep-rooted aspects of it.

Wendy Satchwell Born in Birmingham and studying Art and Design at Redditch College of Art, Wendy then went on to attend Birmingham University gaining a BA Hons Degree in Fine Art & Textile Design. “My work stems from a love and passion for texture and colour, the strong movement of colour, line and space on the canvas draws the viewer in, into a “ Dreams Journey” my journey through very moving, powerful images. The depth and richness of colours, composition and form in my work represents emotions, not only my emotions and feelings, things that have happened to me past and present, but also feelings and situations that all of us can relate to at some point in our lives." Wendy has always been influenced by the great Impressionist artist, Claude Monet for his mesmerising palette, which achieves the seemingly impossible by conveying strength and softness as one. She also finds the bold confidence of Mark Rothko and the beautiful texture and patterns of Gustav Klimt a constant source of inspiration. It’s this depth of colour, composition and form in Wendy’s work that represents emotions. They are not only her emotions and feelings, but also events that she has experienced, past and present.

Seeking inspiration from her surroundings and her own personal life experiences, Wendy’s painting style and method is instantly recognisable.
