FLAME The ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020 | 5779-5780

DEAR LEVINE COMMUNITY, Because of your generosity, Ann & Nate Levine Academy continues to thrive and evolve. Our aim, always, is to grow and strengthen our school’s mission: providing a superior Jewish day school educational experience; encouraging enrollment growth; making the school a first choice within the broader community; and giving our graduates the foundation to flourish and lead in the best schools throughout high school and beyond. Our focus during the 2019-2020 school year was todeliver on four key pillars outlined in the Strategic Plan: INCLUSIVITY – to broaden the reach of Levine across a wider spectrum of normative Judaism, while enhancing the sense of feeling “at home” in our school for all of our families. EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM – to increase the attractiveness of the early childhood program and to align the programwith the 21st century learning programs in the lower and middle school. ACADEMIC INNOVATION – to elevate Levine’s competitive position with respect to other private, selective schools in Dallas. FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY – to ensure the long-term sustainability of the school and provide the resources to permit continued innovation of the curriculum and overall Levine experience. These pillars were the result of interviews conducted to include a broad spectrum of constituents in the community: current parents, parents of students that exited the school, parents that did not consider the school, community rabbis, school faculty, administration and the board of directors. In each of these areas we made great strides: we bolstered our STEM and global education throughout the K-8 curriculum. In support of inclusivity, we completed plans to expand curricular options in our Judaic Studies program in the Middle School. We are solidifying curricular goals between Early Childhood, Kindergarten and First Grade. Additionally, we are growing our professional development for teachers and investing significantly in innovative curricular areas, such as coding, robotics and engineering through our new Makerspace laboratory. As Spring approached, we were forced to deal with unprecedented times and a unique teaching environment. The COVID-19 pandemic infiltrated our community, our schools and our everyday lives. Levine had to quickly pivot and embrace this new challenge and deliver to our families the continuity in education and connectivity that makes us special. We are so very fortunate that our teachers excelled, our students evolved and, although it was not our first choice, we ended the 2020 school year with parking lot graduations, banquets and send-offs. We are grateful that we have your continued support as, without our donors, we would not have been able to support our students and faculty as effectively as we did in such a short time. We rely on you—your commitment to investing in our students, keeping our school on its continuum of excellence, and bolstering our importance in the community. We know that the road ahead will have unique challenges. Our commitment to you, our students and community is steadfast, and with your ongoing support in our annual fundraising efforts we will continue to offer a premier educational experience that is a beacon for our community. Sincerely,

TOM ELIEFF Head of School

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION We continue to perfect our proficiency in Differentiated Instruction (DI) - an initiative we started four years ago. DI tailors instruction to meet the individual student needs. Teachers differentiate content, process, products, and the learning environment; they also use ongoing assessment and flexible grouping to customize the learning experience for their students. THEY DO THIS BY: • Presenting ideas through auditory and visual means • Meeting with small groups to re-teach an idea or skill for struggling learners • Extending advanced learners thinking and skills • Varying the length of time a student may take to complete a task in order to provide additional support • Providing opportunities for an advanced learner to pursue a topic in greater depth • 21st century classrooms with flexible seating • Giving students options of how to express required learning (e.g., multimedia presentations, artistic representation, oral or written presentations) • Allowing students to work alone or in small groups • Helping students understand their unique learning styles • Teaching students empathy, helping them understand their peers’ needs

ELECTIVES A wider variety of academic elective choices have been offered to students including: • Chinese • Biomedical Sciences • Genius Hour Passion Project • Creative Writing & Poetry • Art • Music • Show Choir • Environmental Engineering • Makerspace • Global Studies • Robotics • Israel Around the World • Coding

Although the end of the year was not what any of us expected or hoped for, this group of 8th grade students remained positive and celebrated an outdoor graduation ceremony we will all remember forever featuring pre-recorded videos made by our students, a video including all graduation speeches, and socially-distant participation from their family members. This year’s graduating class also had the opportunity to leave its mark on the school wall, so their imprint will remain forever a part of our school. The twenty-two members of the Class of 2020 will soon be attending the following high schools: Yavneh Academy of Dallas, Greenhill School, Parish Episcopal School, Shepton High School/PISD, J.J. Pearce High School/RISD, and Science & Engineering Magnet/DISD.

VARIOUS CHARITIES IN ISRAEL $900

LEVINE ACADEMY MITZVAH FUND

RETT SYNDROME ORGANIZATION $730

The B’nai Mitzvah Fund has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me. I originally volunteered to help run this fund under the guidance of Wende Weinberg, z"l, starting in 2013. Watching our students recognize the needs in the community and the powerful role they can play in meeting these needs has filled my heart with satisfaction and joy. I hope that as our students move out into the world, they continue to recognize their duty to support others and the contribution they can make in helping those in need. I also hope that parents in upcoming grades will continue to support our children with this very rewarding mitzvah project and thereby honor Wende. - Michelle Lurie, 8th grade parent As a new member of the Levine community, co- chairing the two-year B’nai Mitzvah Fund program allowed me the wonderful opportunity to work with the school administrators on this uplifting project. I had the privilege of meeting my son's peers on their charitable journey which showed their devotion and each of their family's devotion to giving back to the community. Each of them had the opportunity to shine while performing hands-on volunteer projects to grow their inner Mensches! I was honored to take part in this inspirational project, established by the dearly beloved Wende Weinberg, z"l. -Shiri Gilat, 8th grade parent

REFUGEE SERVICES OF TEXAS $496

In 1998, Wende Weinberg, z"l, established a philanthropic fund at Solomon Schechter Academy with the purpose of teaching about charitable giving and decision-making. Students chose to forego Bar/ Bat Mitzvah gifts between classmates in favor of a charitable donation to the fund with the aim of helping us remember others as we celebrate our simchas. Parents and friends made donations to the fund over the course of their middle school years. Monthly meetings were held bringing speakers from different charitable organizations chosen by the students. At the end of the eighth grade year, they made decisions as to how to disburse the money. The fund may be used for both Jewish and non-Jewish organizations, but includes at least 30% Jewish organizations, one of which is always Levine Academy. This structure teaches our students that giving begins at home and expands outward to the broader community. This wonderful tradition has continued over the years and has raised over $100,000 for tzedakah. This year, the program included volunteer work at the North Texas Food Bank, Jewish Family Service food pantry, and a bake sale at the JCC. Students also gave donations of clothing, toiletries and household items to Homeless Veterans Services of Dallas. THE CLASS OF 2020 RAISED $3,912.25 THROUGH THE MITZVAH FUND TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY.

The specialist assisted the teachers with classroom management and techniques for specific challenges. The Learning Support Specialist worked closely with school personnel and parents to assess the social and emotional needs of our students. We then made recommendations for interventions and accommodations. With direction from the Learning Support Specialist, Levine Academy hired three additional classroom teachers to help execute the accommodation plans set into motion this school year. Providing a Learning Support Specialist in the classrooms helped support our students and provided ample training and collaboration for our teachers and parents. L’dor FROM GENERATION V’dor TO GENERATION

Grandparents have always been an important part of our Levine community. This year we have become more included, visible and involved than ever before. We have our own grandparents committee, which meets to suggest and create many more opportunities for involvement. Now you can see us at the special back to school night for grandparents, first Friday of themonth volunteering, special lunch with the grandchildren during the Book Fair, Grandparents and Special Friends Day, and as always, at the school Shabbat celebrations and student performances. We are so happy that the value of Jewish education really does continue L’dor V’dor (from generation to generation) here at Levine. –Emily Kern, Levine Academy Grandparent, Chair of the Grandparent Committee, and Board Member

MASQUERADE 40TH ANNIVERSARY GALA

Thank you! Ann & Nate Levine Academy was proud to celebrate this year’s 40th Anniversary Gala, Sunday, March 8, 2020. This year’s gala honored Mahra & Kevin Pailet. The Pailet/Donsky families have been involved with Solomon Schechter/Levine Academy for the last 40 years as strong supporters of our mission. We are proud to have Mahra & Kevin represent their family as we celebrate our school’s 40th year by honoring our past and celebrating our future. The evening was masquerade themed, as we were lucky to be celebrating this event during the week of Purim. The program began with cocktails, silent and live auctions, and a multi-course dinner along with live entertainment. This event raised critical dollars needed to support our core programs, innovative endeavors, provide scholarship dollars, and fund professional development for our educators.

NEW IN 2019! Summer@Levine is our newest camp program full of choices and experiences for campers age 6-12. Our amazing camp directors, Helene Berke and Marco Rodriguez, designed weekly camp programs and ran an amazingly successful inaugural summer for this new Levine program. Each week the campers chose an activity in the morning and a different experience in the afternoon. The large variety of options available included art, sports, magic, cooking, robotics, and more! Throughout the week, campers bonded while developing critical thinking skills in STEM electives or burning energy in sports, and Fridays campers went on an experiential field trip around the Metroplex. The goal of Summer@ Levine was to create knowledge and experiences to last a lifetime!

Camp Shemesh emphasized individual growth by providing each child the opportunity to contribute and grow within a group setting. Our amazing camp director, Dana Shidlofsky, personally designed weekly camps for children ages 3 months to rising Kindergartners. We fostered positive feelings and Jewish ideals in a warm and nurturing environment with caring and experienced staff. Campers developed skills through arts and crafts, physical fitness, science, drama, music, cooking and sports. Each week campers explored new activities and developed new abilities while planting seeds of friendship with memories to last a lifetime.

ESTABLISHING AN ENDOWMENT FUND CREATES A PERMANENT LEGACY OF SUPPORT FOR LEVINE.
