2021 Memory Book Final Final

We join together for a season of wishes. Gathering to remember, to reflect, and to support one another as we honor the victims and survivors of drunk, drugged, and dangerous driving crashes.

MADD Colorado Statewide Sponsor

We would like to thank our Statewide Sponsor Bachus & Schanker, Agren Blondo for printing this year’s memory book and the many volunteers who helped make this event possible.

A special thank you to Kyra Hoffner for the creating the cover artwork.

Some days I can be strong, I can be weak, I can be proud, I can be meek, I can be gentle, or I can be tough, I can explode when I’ve had enough, sometimes I laugh, sometimes I cry, sometimes I lose, but I always will try, I always get up, when I get knocked down and make a smile, out of any frown, I hope God likes me, the day that we meet, if only for a chance, to sit at His feet and be by His side, year after year while all of the bad things just disappear, so when life gets tough, and it’s hard to be strong, I’ll never forget...HEAVEN IS WHERE I BELONG Submitted by: Peggy Cano

Harold W. (Tres) Adcock III March 11, 1984 - August 1, 2014 In Remembrance of...

Tres was everyone’s “best friend.” He loved hiking and enjoyed the outdoors. When he walked into a room you couldn’t help to be drawn to him and your spirits lifted. Tres lived to love. He lived for the joy he got out of life and in turn inspired joy in others. His light shined bright and it was obvious to all who were blessed enough to know him.

Rebecca (Gumtow) Allen June 23, 1976 - July 22, 2008 In Remembrance of...

Rebecca Gumtow Allen was a beautiful person both inside and out. My daughter loved life and everyone in it. She was kind, caring, strong, generous, smart, ambitious and friendly. On July 22, 2008 at 5:00 a.m. she was an innocent young woman riding her bicycle in a bike lane. She wore a helmet and reflective clothing. She obeyed all the rules, but that didn’t matter because she was struck and killed instantly by an underage young man who chose to drink and use drugs while driving and use his car as a weapon to kill. Rebecca is gone. The world has lost a bright start and our lives will never be the same.

Matt Angel May 13, 1974-October 31, 2016 In Remembrance of...

My Memories of My Beautiful Son Matthew Angel

Matt, or Mateo as we sometimes called him, was our only child! Although he was not a child by age, he was extremely close to his family and friends. Most everyone who knew him loved him and had nice things to say about his love for others! He loved being around people, especially to the ones he cared about and loved, and was always taking care of others, being almost anyone and everyone he knew! He was usually happy as a child growing up, and this continued until his death. He never said a bad word about anyone. He recently had become a grandfather of Jayden and was sadly killed while Jayden was only four months old, not long enough to enjoy his grandson! We assume that everyone is entitled to a long life, but we have nothing to say about when we are born the beginning of life, and in the end when we die, but Matt in his life had a lot to say about the middle and how he lived his life! Please DO NOT take anyone you love for granted! If there is someone who needs to hear I Love You then please DO IT NOW! Matt did! He always told us how much he loved us every day and for that I will always cherish in my heart of memories! Matt, we love and miss you every single day! And know we will be together again in Heaven with our Jesus!

January 13, 1991 - June 14, 2014

It’s already been two years, but time has stopped in our lives, we miss you so much. I wait for the day I get to see you and hold you. I miss you so much “Mi Muchacho” Thank you dear son! For all of these beautiful memories you left us and that still live on. One life is too short for all of the things I would have liked to live with you. Your acts of love are here in our hearts and in everything you touched. How I miss you! People say that you have to die for them to love you. This is a big lie. I loved you since before you were born. And I was always with you so that nothing and no one would ever harm you and that you could have a better future. Until that day, that I wish I would have been the victim and not you.

Katherine Rose Banzhaf April 16, 1986 - January 13, 2013 In Remembrance of...

Kate was an amazing and beautiful young lady who loved nature, gardening, outdoor adventures, dancing and all types of animals. Growing up in Texas, she always looked forward to family vacations in Colorado where many hiking and skiing adventures formed her love for the state that she chose for her adult life. A graduate of UCCS, she was an extraordinary teacher who hoped to one day work at the Black Forest School in the Woods. Kate had an amazing ability to cope with life’s disappointment and always forged on when faced with difficulties. She is missed dearly by her family and friends. The world is a little less complete without her wonderful smiling face and huge loving heart.

In her memory please contemplate the following:

“Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass…. It is about learning how to dance in the rain.”

Chad was an amazing, bright, spirited kid who never had a frown on his face. He brought so much happiness to everyone in his life. He was addicted to eating any and everything and then working it off at the skate park for hours. Chad loved spending time with the people who mattered most to him. He was loved by so many, and he taught so many how to love! He lived such a carefree, happy life. He was always being goofy, and he had big dreams. Wesley Brodt December 20, 1911 - January 17, 1977 Wes Brodt was a very hard worker, he held many jobs through his teens and young adult years. He worked at National Cash Registers for over 15 years. Not wanting to transfer again, he decided that he could do it alone, so he created Wes Brodt Business Machines. Dad’s life was family, bowling, the Elks Club and being a friend to his customers for over 40 years. He traveled a radius of 60 miles taking care of all small business machines. The shock of learning that my Dad was also killed by a teen drunk driver gives me even more determination for a future of

NO MORE VICTIMS .

Dad was tough but I look back and say “thank you Dad”, all that I have been through over the years, I wouldn’t have made it without you.

Mom loved to crochet, chat with friends and play bridge. Mom’s life was not easy but she really loved my dad. Through the years she really tried to do her very best.

Remember Me

Don’t remember me with sadness Don’t remember me with tears Remember all the laughter We’ve shared throughout the years Now I am contented That my life it was worthwhile Knowing that I passed along the way I made somebody smile When you are walking down the street

And you’ve got me on my mind I’m walking in your footsteps Only half a step behind So please don’t be unhappy Just because I’m out of sight Remember that I’m with you Each morning, noon and night

My grandmother was and still is my hero. She spent most of her life in the service of others. Her favorite act of service was to cook meals for families or individuals in need of extra support during hard times. My grandma was a woman of strength, unconditional love, charity, compassion, loyalty, trust and friendship.

Forever in a Memory A memory is not something anyone can take. Not through pain, hurting, or just one mistake. We hold on to them because we cant let it go, But when we think of them tears start to show. The world wants us to be strong, fearless, brave but all we really want is to be saved. We miss them because their gone. but through memories they can live on. Ill never forget all the moments we shared And each time you told me how much you cared. When you tucked me into my bed at night Or how you would hug me tight. In my heart you'll always be And I'll see you in each memory.

At the end of my life, my Dad will be the best thing I get back.

She was loyal and easy to please, there were no expectations from her of anyone. She loved and wanted to be loved. She was proudly serving her country in the Navy. During that

time, Ana made a horrible decision to drink and drive, which ultimately took her life and left my family with a lifetime of grief and heartache. She will forever be loved and missed.

Right now I'm in a different place, And although we seem apart, I'm closer than I ever was... I'm there inside your heart. I'm with you when you greet each day And while the sun shines bright, I'm there to share the sunsets, too... I'm with you every night. I'm with you when the times are good, To share a laugh or two, And if a tear should start to fall... I'll still be there for you. And when that day arrives That we no longer are apart, I'll smile and hold you close to me... Forever in my heart.

On January 4th, 2009 our lives changed forever, in a way we would never have imagined... and in a way we would never forget.

Our beautiful Samantha (our Samantha Sunshine) life was taken by a drunk driver. At the mere age of 20, her life came to a sudden end.

Her memory will forever remain in our hearts and her smile forever in our minds. We look forward to the day we will see her again and watch her finish her unfinished life.

Craig “Huggy Bear” Highline April 1, 1956 - October 16, 2008 In Remembrance of...

On October 16, 2008 - a wonderful light in my life was extinguished forever. Not a day goes by when I don't think of, miss or wish I could talk to my dear Officer Craig "Huggy Bear" Highline. As I have become an empty nester - I am angry that we don't have this time together. I still hear the words from the poem “The Folded Page” - “Teacher says to leave the page folded as some things are hard to understand” echo in my head. There are no words to comprehend. Dear Craig - I love you, I miss you. But most of all I miss being able to share my day to day with you. I wish you could see the wonderful people our children have become as well as meet and enjoy all the grand kids! You will forever be in my heart! In the words of Rose Kennedy, " It has been said that time heals all wounds. I don't agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens, but the pain is never gone.”

Curt Holland August 13, 1983-October 16, 2020 In Remembrance of...

Curt was an incredible person who touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with. He always made people laugh effortlessly - like ordering pancakes at a Mexican restaurant. He loved his family and friends hard, he was his daughter’s best buddy and couldn’t wait to teach his son how to play baseball. He had an infectious smile that lit up the room and made everyone feel welcome.

He accomplished his dream of becoming a police officer, like his dad, and served his community as a detective honorably.

He was my best friend and the love of my life. We had a lifetime left of dreams to fulfill and memories to make. - Amanda Holland

Karter Grey Hopkins August 24, 1995-January 8, 2017 In Remembrance of...

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about & so miss my beautiful son, Karter! From the time he was little he had such a tender heart and an old soul. He always wanted to make people smile, laugh, be happy & he also put others first. This didn’t always work so well as I discovered when he was able to drive…he would often be late for school or work because he was too busy taking his friends where they needed to be! Karter had a contagious smile and also such a funny, funny side coming up with some crazy things that always cracked us up! In his youth he played baseball, football & lacrosse. He always gave his all, but winning or losing didn’t really matter to Karter. What mattered to him were his teammates & often the opponents. It wasn’t unusual during baseball games when he was covering a base that he would strike up a friendly conversation with the opponent he was covering. Karter also loved snowboarding, art, children & his dog Charli. He talked about becoming an elementary teacher & I have no doubt he would have been great! Karter was at the beginning of a new, positive chapter in his life when he was taken from us. We talk about & remember him all the time

with tears and also with smiles & laughter!

I love and miss every single thing about Karter-his smile, his eyes, his great hugs, his humor, his smell, his sweet & caring side, his sassy & stubborn side, his intense love & respect for his sister, his love for all of his friends & family, his future & what that would look like…I love you infinity and beyond, always and forever my Karter Grey!

Until I See You Again- Love, Mom xoxoxo

Haron Horton January 22, 1979 - October 2, 2015 In Remembrance of...

My fondest memory of my only son Haron is when I found out he was a chef. He made me fresh crab cakes. It was so good that we went back to the store to get more crabmeat. We ate crab cakes for two days! He made everything himself — sauces, dressings. I told him he should write the recipes down into a book. I never dreamed I would never get to see him again or taste the wonderful food he cooked.

In Honor of... Joan Constance James Christopher James Injured July 31, 1973

Joan Constance James and two-year old Chris were both critically injured July 31, 1973, on a street in Tulsa, OK, by an alcoholic driver who had previously been hospitalized for alcoholism. Driving at a terrific rate of speed, this indigent unin- sured alcoholic driver ran a red light and rammed her huge old car into Joan’s small car. Suffering multiple injuries, Joan was left in a deep coma and given little hope for survival. Chris suffered the loss of a kidney and his spleen. Joan was always a good student; at the time of the accident, she was studying at the University of Tulsa to earn a degree to become a children’s social worker. She was a talented musician, playing second harp in Tulsa’s Philharmonic Symphony. It only took a “minute” for Joan’s future to be destroyed, her life shattered. The subsequent years have been difficult. Deserted by her husband, Joan was determined to make a normal life for herself and her son, despite having emerged from a deep coma (of approximately four months) suffering brain damage. Joan eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts degree over a period of 15 years but was never able to find employment. Discouraged, she attempted to end her life three times. Through the years, Joan endured multiple corrective surgeries. She was also hospitalized in psychiatric hospitals many times, but no amount of counseling seemed to be effective. Mostly her stays in the facilities resulted in her being heavily sedated, which left her even more depressed. Joan and I came to Colorado in 2010, and she was able to live with her brother until she broke her leg approximately five years ago. At my age of 90, it was deemed that I could no longer care for her. She now resides at Aspen Living Center in Colorado Springs. Chris has fared better. He was able to recover from his injuries as much as possible, but during early childhood he suffered many hospitalizations. Chris is married, has two sons, and a granddaughter. He is a skilled mechanic working at American Airlines.

Stephen your presence on this earth is truly missed. Your infectious laugh, huge heart and big smile meant so much to those around you that being without it has left us all heartbroken and empty and the void is agonizing. You were the most amazing father and being robbed of the opportunity to fulfill that job has been devastating; I hope your daughter will always remember how wonderful you are. You always loved spending time with friends and family and always went out of your way to make time for us. A summer time Bar-b-que was always your favorite way to get people together and celebrate life and no better of a person to celebrate life with than you. Your craving for fun, laughter, life and living in the moment has taught us all to be better at it. You were a legend in your own way. It’s because of the traits that you carried with you daily that left us all crimpled by your loss and craving to have you back. I know that we will all be together again one day, but while we are down here living… it’s always for you! You will always live on in everything beautiful!

Do not stand and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am in a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the fields of ripening grain.

I am in the morning hush I am in the graceful rush.

Raymond Michael Lack June 28, 1972 - February 6, 1994 In Remembrance of... My beloved brother, he had a smile that could go on for miles, a laugh that filled the whole world. He could brighten up anyone’s day with his wonderful sense of humor. He was well on his way to being a talented DJ. He loved music and life itself, he could never be too serious about anything, which is what I loved most about him. Raymond was enlisted in the Army and he was on his way to his next station in Fort Hood, Texas when we so tragically lost him because a drunk driver driving down the wrong side of the road on the other side of the hill he was climbing in his brand new car on February 6, 1994. The day of his funeral couldn’t have been more fitting for him on February 14, 1994, Valentine’s Day.

He would’ve been the best Uncle to my three children and my brother’s one. He loved playing with his little brothers when they were small, my most favorite thing to laugh about is when he would crawl around on the floor with them meowing like a cat, and they thought that was the greatest thing. No matter how much time has passed he will always be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. He will be forever held in my heart and never forgotten. We Love and Miss You so much, Raymond!

Silent Tears

Words that are meant to bless you- I am not sure where to start; But somewhere in those words… I would like them to touch your heart! I can feel your loneliness, I can sense your despair There is no way I can know the hurt, But there are so many that care!

I remember the headlights, Then there was an awful crash- Finding the children with no pulse… And my husband through the dash! The silent tears… Came unbidden, flooding my face; Though those tears are often hidden- Can I lean on God’s grace? They took me to the hospital- I did not want to go. I was on a ride I could not get off of, A twilight zone kind of show! The funeral… Each new battle from day to day; Silent tears no one will ever see, God, do you hear me pray? Why did I survive? Why did You allow me to live? Help me to beat the devil Lord… Show me what I have to give. I can tell how much you miss them, By the silent tears that you don’t cry; But only God has the answer, To all of the times that you ask why! - L. Watson, 10/10/2016

You may wonder if there is a purpose, In that broken and confused life…

God, I did not ask for misery; I sure did not ask for strife!

Well, all things work together sis, And is sufficient in His grace; The devil wants you to quit, He wants you out of the race. The silent tears come spilling down; They threaten to leave you bare. They conjure up a hurt so real… Does anyone really care?

It seems only yesterday- That horrible unforgettable night.

But after nearly two years; How do I stay in the fight?

Dalton Makepeace McCreary March 28, 1994 - August 22, 2016 In Remembrance of...

He was not my son. He did not grow in my womb but when he was an infant with colic and my sister and my mother grew frustrated with his cries I put his bloated little tummy over my knees and gently rocked him until he fell asleep. I helped make so many of his Halloween costumes. I harped on him endlessly to get his taxes done until he finally showed up on April 14 th and let me do them for him. My daughter was his sister. But he was not my son. He was not my brother. We were not born of the same parents but it was my parents who helped to raise him. Together we worried about my mother’s health as she slowly succumbed to Alzheimer’s and I watched him tenderly care for her and worry and dote over my father. He would call me and ask me to

check up on Paws, worry about his diet, if he made it to his doctor appointment, or if his insulin levels were ok. He even just worried about whether or not his Old Man was happy. Dalton helped me find my new home. He helped me hang the Christmas lights and make home repairs, and even tore my motorcycle apart and then couldn’t get it put back together. He drove down my street all the time just to make sure everything looked safe. He approved of my boyfriend and he was my protector. We argued like siblings. But he was not my brother. He was not my friend. Our DNA, our name, our blood is the same. He was more than my friend. He was not just my nephew. I went with him to his first Bronco’s game. I took him to his first Red Rocks concert. I was his Auntie. But he was not just my nephew. He was my back up in life. The guy who bailed me out of a jam; broke into my car when the keys were locked in it, even though he was the one locked the keys in there to begin with. Picked me up when my car broke down. Took my mom to the hospital with me and kept me company on long nights when things weren’t going so well. We took long walks through the cemetery and he knew exactly what I wanted done with my ashes when I died, and promised he would take care of my girls. He was not any one of those things he was all of them. And now I am without my son, my brother, my nephew, my friend, my back up in life and the world is a little less beautiful than it was on August 21 st . Heaven is a time machine. And if you want to know where Dalton is right now, I’d like you to close your eyes for just a moment. It’s 1973. There is a transistor radio blaring the Who, Pink Floyd, and some weird Japanese techno band you’ve never heard of. Off in the back ground is a 1973 Scout made of real steel. He is there sitting on the ground building a café racer out of some old Japanese bike he found in a garbage pile. His garage is a mess, and he probably can’t find his 11 millimeter wrench. If you come across him there and you feel lost, just go up to him and ask him for directions. He’ll offer you a drink and point you in the right direction because he always seems to know where everything is, except his 11 millimeter wrench because that’s under a pile of manuals that he’s collected, read, and memorized. He’ll offer you a drink and a handshake, and that handshake means something to him because a man is as good as his word, and his name means something. At least to Dalton it does. He’s there right now in his messy garage and he’s building whatever he wants. There are no lap tops and cellphones to get in his way, and if there are, he’s lost his by now so don’t bother trying to call him. He’s got a couple of cats and a little white dog to keep him company for now. He’s got plenty of manuals full of facts and figures to keep him busy. And when it’s your turn. When it’s my turn. He’ll come pick you up at the gates so you won’t have far to walk and he’ll take you wherever you need to go. He is there, patient and kind. Taking care of all of us from heaven just the way he took care of us when he was here. - Erin Garcia Submitted by: Bradi McCreary
