THE Recovery Review

YOU CAN BECOME YOUR BEST SELF!

July 2020

As a physical therapist, my job is to help people overcome their pain and become their best selves. When

I know our health care system is broken. I see examples of this every day. So many people are not getting the care they need and are actually getting the opposite. I have several doctor friends in general practice and a variety of specialties, and they are saying the same thing. Now, we know that many of the pills prescribed to help with a variety of issues are actually contributing to the problem. That isn’t to say that certain medications don’t have a place in our medicine cabinets. When it comes to acute issues, such as infections, many medications save lives. They are necessary for recovery and maintaining good health. But other medications have gotten in the way of good health. Anxiety, for example, was treated for decades with certain pain pills that didn’t work. Instead, they made things worse for a lot of people. I saw it happen to a veteran friend of mine. He was severely injured while in the military and was left with a physical injury, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His doctors treated his anxiety and PTSDwith pain pills, and like so many Americans, he became addicted to them. Eventually, he went through rehab, and the Department of Veterans Affairs developed a new philosophy of care: meditate not medicate. It’s a philosophy I can get behind. In many ways, it’s part of the philosophy we practice at Accelerate Therapy & Performance. You can’t be your best self if you’re covering up the problemwith medication. When you come to Accelerate, you have a goal in mind. You may want to get rid of your pain or restore motion to your knee or shoulder. We’re here to listen to your goal, develop steps that will get you there, and guide you every step of the way. We want to know you . I’ve learned that when I get to know someone and their goals, I can better help them become the best version of themselves. I can support them and give themwhat they need to achieve their goals and get back to doing what they love.

people come to us for care, they are usually living in pain or dealing with a part of their

body that is not working right, often after an accident or an injury. They are vulnerable, and their lives have been disrupted, leaving them unable to do the things they love. Sometimes, it takes a lot of hard work and consistency to become your best self. In fact, it can take months. But that effort is worth it. We’ve helped people transform their lives and rediscover themselves. The type of care we offer focuses on fixing the true source of the problem, not just treating the symptoms.

4Ways to Reuse Instead of Recycle

Toys or Art Supplies Kids tend to play with the box their new toy came in rather than the toy itself for a reason. Cardboard boxes spark creativity, and the possibilities are endless! Boxes can be used as forts, spaceships, building blocks, art canvases, and more. Empty boxes can provide hours of fun with a little help from a vivid imagination. Storage Boxes are meant for holding items, so use empty ones to organize a cluttered garage or attic or safely store less frequently used items like winter jackets or holiday decorations. If the brown cardboard aesthetic on a shelf just won’t cut it, paint the boxes or wrap them in eye-catching gift wrap, then label them. If you’re not sure how you want to use your boxes, just hold on to them until you’re ready. The beauty of cardboard is that you can break it down, store it easily, and reconstruct the boxes later when you find a use for them.

As more people opt for online shopping, the number of home deliveries is skyrocketing. Almost every item ordered comes in its own cardboard box, and nearly 20% of these boxes end up in landfills, while the other 80% require significant amounts of energy to recycle. Here are four ways to reuse those boxes instead of just tossing them out. GardenBed Starters Because cardboard boxes are loaded with carbon and not contaminated by many other chemicals, they’re great for starting new plants or flower beds. They help reduce weeds and protect weak or young plants from the elements, and when the carbon in cardboard combines with the nitrogen in the dirt, a nutrient-rich soil emerges for plants to flourish in. Compost Clean corrugated cardboard —what most Amazon boxes are made of — is another great source of useful carbon. Cut your boxes into pieces and place them in your compost pile so the carbon combines with the nitrogen from food scraps. The process helps break the pile down into nutrient-rich humus for healthy soil.

The Source Isn’t Always What You Think

Shoulder pain can be incredibly uncomfortable and affect many everyday tasks. Youmight not be able to lift, carry, or push objects, and it may sideline you frommany of your favorite activities or even take you out of work completely. When you feel shoulder pain, it’s easy to assume that the source is in the tissue surrounding the shoulder. It makes sense, right? The pain is coming from the shoulder, so the problemmust be there. However, that isn’t always the case. Though youmay feel pain in your shoulder or experience a reduced range of motion, the issue may not be in the shoulder itself. Shoulder pain can stem from issues in the neck, elbow, or thoracic spine, the longest segment of the spine in the upper back. How you respond to this pain can make all the difference. When you feel persistent pain or range of motion loss, your instinct may be to consult with an orthopedic surgeon. It’s not uncommon for people to pursue surgery before seeing a physical

therapist, but this can lead to other problems.

An orthopedic surgeon is going to take a close look at your shoulder to determine where (and if) they need to

operate. Theywill focus onwhere you feel pain rather than look at the potential sources of your pain.

If the true source of the pain is coming fromone of the areas adjacent to the shoulder, the orthopedic surgeonmaymiss this. Theymay operate and provide temporary relief —or no relief at all —but then you’ll be back to square onewhile also recovering fromsurgery. It is important to consult with a physical therapist before putting surgery on the table. At Accelerate PT, we look at the shoulder and everything surrounding it to determine the true source of your pain or discomfort. You may be able to avoid surgery altogether! If you or a loved one is experiencing shoulder pain, you won’t want to miss our next virtual workshop on July 23 at 6 p.m. We’ll be talking all about shoulder pain and what you can do to get your pain under control. The Red Hot Mamas Run for 24 Hours!

On June 5, the Red Hot Mamas — a running group right here in Salisbury and the surrounding area — completed a 24-hour relay! They ran from 6 p.m. on Friday, June 5, until 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.

This workshop is for you if ...

• You’re losing sleep or can’t find a comfortable position to sleep in. • You’ve missed work because of shoulder pain. • You’ve missed out on a family vacation or you’ve given up your hobbies such as golf, bowling, or tennis because you’re afraid of aggravating your shoulder. • You’ve found yourself worrying more about your shoulder pain than living your life. You’ve had enough and just want to be back to normal.

Red Hot Mamas is a group of dozens of women (and men!) who run for fun and to support different causes. One of the runners is Accelerate’s very own Delaine Fowler! The group was started in 2010 when a group of women got together to run the 210-mile Blue Ridge Relay, a course that takes participants from Grayson Highlands State Park, Virginia, to Asheville, North Carolina. Before June’s 24-hour run, the group ran a virtual relay, the COVID-19 Miler. It was one of the group’s first fundraising events, and they ended up raising nearly $10,000. With the 24-hour run, their goal was to raise money for Rowan Helping Ministries in Salisbury. With the pandemic continuing to impact our community, only two runners were running at a time, but over the 24-hour period, 48 runners participated in the event. Because Red Hot Mamas is an independent running group, they were able to deliver 100% of donations raised to Rowan Helping Ministries. Being able to donate all the proceeds of the event means more can be done to help our community. More than ever, Rowan Helping Ministries needs our community support. In the wake of the pandemic, many people are out of work and out of their homes. Many families have nowhere else to turn. Rowan Helping Ministries ensures those families don’t go without the basic necessities. If you would like to learn more about Rowan Helping Ministries or would like to donate or volunteer, visit their website at RowanHelpingMinistries.org for more information. Accelerate Therapy & Performance was thrilled to sponsor this great event, and we look forward to supporting many other causes in the coming months!

BE YOUR BEST SELF WITH THE HELP OF OTHERS

How to Implement a Virtual Wellness Challenge

A lot of people struggle to keep up with a regular wellness routine because they lack accountability to hold them to it. Whether it’s exercise,

participating, andwhen the challenge is carried out virtually, participants havemore freedomand flexibility in their routines without missing out on any of the social interaction that makes it fun.

Get Started Every challenge should have a quantifiable goal depending on the theme. Challenges like working out for 30minutes a day, getting seven hours of sleep at night, eating 1 cup of leafy greens with every meal, or meditating for 15minutes every day are all great examples. Whatever it is, the target should be clear and reasonable in order to encourage maximum participation and low burnout. Stay Accountable Treat the challenge like you would a weekly book club. Set a time every week to meet via a video call to share wins and setbacks, discuss necessary changes to the challenge, plan for the next week’s challenge, and offer encouragement. If you really want to up the inspiration, determine a prize to be awarded to the person who actively participates the most. Just be sure you have a tangible way to record and share those results, like video evidence of the activity.
