Welcome to the Bristol, Tennessee Parks and Recreation activity guide. Summer is here and we've got lots of new opportunities for you to make the most of the season! Join our fast growing kickball League, or help your child find their new favorite pastime by splashing through the splash pad or playing Nerf Games. Up your child's golf game at our Golf Course with professional instruction in the first tee program. You can count on a variety of new camps and classes at the Steele Creek Nature Center. Location: Slater Community Center Gymnasium Days & Time: Tuesdays & Thursdays at 6:30 pm Instructor: Taffie Barb Fee: $30.00 for 8 weeks or $8.00 per class The class combines toning, sculpting, strength, cardio & stretching using weighted and bodyweight exercise. The class is open to ages 16 & over and can be modified for all fitness levels. Starts August 16

Location: Slater Community Center Gymnasium Days & Time: Mondays & Wednesdays at 6:15 pm Instructor: Becky Olinger Fee: $20.00 for 8 weeks or $8.00 per class The class is all about challenging the body so it achieves better endurance, strength and flexibility. Strength, balance, endurance, and coordination will be challenged each Saturday because every workout will be different. The class is open to ages 16 and over.

Friday, July 8th, 10:00 am Flight Science: Meet Don at the Nature Center for an introduction to powered flight in the Animal Kingdom. Learn about birds, bats, and bugs, and make and fly your own kite! Friday, July 22nd, 10:00 am Butterflies, Dragonflies, and Damselflies: Meet Don at the Mill Creek Park Entrance (on Broad Street) for an easy walk in search of these gems of the summer skies. Tuesday, August 2nd, 4:00 pm Bones: Intro to Osteology: Meet Lance in the Nature Center Classroom for an engaging presentation (and activity) on the science of bones. Then, take a tour of the Center’s newly renovated research and collections area! Friday, August 19th, 4:00 pm Honey Bees! In honor of World Honey Bee Day, meet Jeremy at the Nature Center for a talk on these important pollinators, then we’ll take a walk to the apiary and see what’s buzzing! Friday, September 9th, 4:00 pm Fungus Among Us: Meet Mike at the Nature Center for an easy walk in search of neither plant nor animal, but mushrooms!

Summer Nature Camps 2022!

FLIGHT-ology Camp – This camp will explore powered flight! We’ll look for birds and bugs of Steele Creek Park while learning how and why animals fly. We will also explore physics and weather phenomena (including making and flying kites) related to the science of flight! Ages 7 - 9 July 11th-15th Nature’s Clean-Up Camp – Who are the creatures that keep nature tidy? We will learn about decomposers, detritivores, and scavengers and explore what they do and why they’re important. Campers will be guided through nature on a series of hikes and activities in search of these organisms. Ages 10-12 July 18th - 22nd All camps operate from 8:30 am until noon Monday – Friday and space is limited. The registration fee is $50.00, which includes a t-shirt and all materials for the camp. Parks and Recreation Commission The City of Bristol, Tennessee Parks and Recreation Department manages athletic and community programming activities as well as maintaining park facilities located within the City of Bristol. The City of Bristol, Tennessee City Council appoints residents to the Parks and Recreation Commission. The volunteer Commission acts as advisory board to the Department and City Council. The Commission helps to establish rules, regulations, functions, goals, policies, and procedures for the performance of its duties and for the use, operation, and conduct of all facilities and programs.
