PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE April is finally arriving and not too soon after the late winter snow and cold in March. In addition to hopefully warmer days and green grass, April brings us to the time to recognize our wonderful employees atWilmington Country Club by contributing to the Centennial Scholarship Fund. Our Club seeks contributions to this fund every spring and fall. This fund was started as part of our Club’s Centennial Celebration in 2001 with the first awards being made in 2002. Under the direction of the Centennial Scholarship Committee, chaired by Jamie Murray, this fund has grown to over $523,000. Each year, applications are received from Club employees, their family members and caddies requesting support for their educational costs. Since September 2016, we have added $41,825 to this fund from 258 members. In the past year, 487 Club members have generously contributed to this fund. At the June 2016 meeting, the Centennial Scholarship Committee determined that 21 applicants were deserving of awards and awarded a total of $49,250. This coming June, the Committee will again meet to consider applications and award scholarships.Therefore, your contribution now will be available to help our employees and their families with their educational expenses. In the next few weeks, our members will receive a request from the Centennial Scholarship Committee to support this scholarship fund. I urge all our members to join me in supporting our employees and their families by contributing to this scholarship fund. As always, thanks for reading. Joseph F. Hacker III President

A NOTE FROM PHIL

April Greetings! Traditionally, this is the time of the year when outdoor activities begin to take precedent from those of a winter nature, and this year should be no different. Although, that late season snow event and sudden drop in temperatures did end up making preparations for the upcoming spring/summer season a bit more challenging than we anticipated. Nevertheless, we are ready to take full advantage of any good weather

keep up with the group ahead of you. Our Golf staff will once again be charged with the duty of monitoring the progress of play to ensure the experience is enjoyable for all players. April is also the time of year when many of our members return from their winter domiciles. It’s always great seeing them and welcoming them back to their Club. Invariably, one of the questions that gets asked is the classic, “What’s new?” When that happens, our usual response is something like “not much, what’s new with you?”Well not this year.This year, we are prepared to give you about 70 things that are new. In fact, our communications team has prepared a pamphlet of sorts that highlights, department by department, all the changes. Some are minor, some are major, but all are the result of our efforts to continually adjust Club facilities and operations to satisfy the wants and needs of the membership. If you think your Club never changes, you’ll be amazed. Let’s spend a moment and talk a little about Food and Beverage. First of all, we resume full food service operations on Tuesday, April 4th so please adjust your plans accordingly. In looking at the schedule, the most significant event in April will be our Easter weekend activities. On Saturday, the 15th, we have invited the Easter Bunny to Breakfast to be followed by a traditional Egg Hunt. Sunday is our spectacular Easter Brunch Buffet. A little earlier in the month, on Thursday, April 6th, we are holding the Bouchaine Wine Dinner in the Dining Room. The menus for both these events are posted on our Facebook page. (As of now, almost 300 of your fellow members follow us on Facebook – if you aren’t, why not?) Speaking of menus, during the month of April, every dining venue will be getting new menus. We’ll start with Café 1901 and the Pub, then move to the Tavern/Grille, followed by the Dining Room. Watch for details of a social event when we offer a “welcome back” party that features tastings from all the new items. April promises to be an exciting month. Hopefully, the forsythia and tulips weren’t damaged in March. I’m sure if you find the time to enjoy the beauty of spring at your Club, you’ll be glad you did! days that come our way and have every intention of meeting the spring schedule for golf and tennis events. This month’s Bulletin contains all the detail on spring programs, events and activities. I hope you’ll take a moment to review it thoroughly. There is a lot going on. I’ll begin my comments by focusing on a few golf related topics. First of all, many of you may have noticed a small modification to the Breezeway. One of the objectives for this year is to enhance our guest experience, especially as it pertains to golf. To accomplish this, we will be providing greeting and bag assistance services at the Breezeway for the majority of the golf season. It is necessary for this individual to have a location that will support their duties and provide some degree of shelter from the elements. While this service will be a nice addition for our guests, we expect it will also prove quite beneficial to our members. Picking up or dropping off your clubs will get a lot easier. There are two additional golf initiatives that will be focal points of upcoming communications. Neither are new.The first has to do with ongoing efforts to control cart traffic and minimize turf damage from their use. The Grounds Committee has received the blessing of the Board to restrict cart traffic to the fairways on the South Course. Additionally, traffic approaching and surrounding the greens will be tightly controlled. When the South opens (April 11th), players will see the new cart path extending from #3 Green all the way to #5 Tee has been completed.All cart traffic will be restricted to this new path this year.The second “not new” focus, is arguably just as important as maintaining the best possible turf conditions. We’re talking about pace of play, specifically the need to play “ready golf ” and

BOOK CLUB For our Tuesday, April 4th selection, we chose The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis, the New Castle County READS 2017 author who will be speaking at the Riverfront on April 26th. Mathis protagonist, Hattie Shepherd, is seventeen, living with her husband in Philadelphia and the mother of 7 month old twins who she named Philadelphia and Jubilee, names of promise and hope. She is looking forward, not backward, to the Georgia she fled when her father was murdered by white men who then took his blacksmith shop and nailed their own sign above its door. We meet Hattie when she is in a heartbreaking struggle as pneumonia is sucking her twins’ breath away. They are the first two members of her tribe, and they die, killed by poverty and the harsh winter in the north. These deaths seem to have stolen the tenderness out of Hattie and her hopes for a better life in the North. Yet, she continues to have children, and each succeeding chapter deals with an occurrence in the life of one of her other nine children and of one grandchild she helps raise - all stories that relate to the legacy of slavery and the trials blacks experienced as they migrated from the South to the North. Racism, the complexities of sexuality, marriage, mental problems and addictions are all here, and yet the novel is compassionate and beautiful. It pulsates with the driving force of the American Dream in the face of adversity. Our May selection is Anthony Summers’ and Robbyn Swan’s superbly researched book, A Matter of Honor Pearl Harbor: Betrayal, Blame, and a Family’s Quest for Justice . This book is a nail-biter as the tension in the days leading up to the catastrophe at Pearl Harbor increases and the Washington higher-ups fail to keep the commanders at Pearl Harbor in the loop. Don’t miss this heartbreaking story of politics and war.

Our spring and summer event schedule will soon be in full swing and the Club will be bustling with activity. While a new spring menu is part of our annual traditions, our “Tasting Party” to kick off the new menu is an exciting new event and is complimentary to all members and guests. The Tommasi estate has grown steadily over the course of years and today owns vineyards and estates in 4 different Italian regions including Masseria Surani in Manduria, Puglia. MANDURIA is in the Salento wine region, which belongs to the city of Taranto. This part of Puglia was founded and colonized by the Ancient Greeks back in 700 B.C. This red wine is marked with notes of red fruits and black cherry on the nose with a strong, medium-bodied agreeable flavor, soft tannins and balanced acidity. It is very aromatic with a full, juice driven finish. The Ares is composed of 50% Primitivo, 30% Negroamaro and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine sees 6 months aging in oak casks. The Ares is a fine accompaniment to robust appetizers and red or roasted meats.

This white wine is marked with notes of white flowers, tangerine and lime. It is very aromatic with a full, juice driven finish.The Arethemis is composed of 90% Fiano and 10% Chardonnay, fermented in stainless steel tanks and matured in inox tanks for about four months contributing to its lively varietal characteristics. This wine is a perfect complement to many of our appetizers, soups and salads as well as a fine pairing with fish entrees.

SPRING INTO SHAPE BY APPLYING THE 10% RULE

Our Fitness Staff is on site with our group exercise instructor s and per sonal trainer s. Spring is here! Soon enough we will all be going outside riding bikes, walking the beach, and playing more golf and tennis. Before we do, it is important to consider the 10% Rule of exercise progression, which applies to the principle of frequency, intensity, and time (known as the FIT Principle), and tells us to increase by no more than 10% each week the frequency, intensity, or duration (time) of exercise (not all three!). The 10% Rule, therefore, helps us to conservatively increase any one of the FIT components by 10% each week. For example, if you have been hitting golf balls for 20 minutes twice a week, you should increase either the walking to 5 or ten minutes, or the golf from 20 to 22 minutes, or the twice a week, to twice a week to 2 and a half times per week, but not all variables at once. If you have been keeping fit all winter (you have, haven’t you?) then your increase in

time can be more substantial.The take home message is to not overdo it now, leading to nagging injury that will limit your ability to do the activities you love to do for the rest of spring and summer. Restorative Yoga greatly enabled me to regain fluidity of motion and a sense of well-being after back surgery and then a herniated disc. I gained confidence in my ability to move without pain and was able to safely increase my exercise program. Going forward, RestorativeYoga will be an integral part of my routine.

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS

With the opening of the South Course in a short time signaling the active schedule of the 2017 playing season, we in Grounds are picking up speed looking forward to the upcoming months with renewed energy. South Course aerification is behind us and the North Course will be done in a few weeks. As we stretch our legs and work through the growing pains of normalizing many new seasonal staff, we would like to make you aware of some full time personnel changes in the Grounds Department that took place over the winter months. Tony Kowalski is now South Course Superintendent. His promotion took place with the departure of Nick Larrimore following his acceptance of the position of Course Superintendent at Plantation Lakes Golf and Country Club in Millsboro, DE.Tony spent last season as North Course Superintendent where he certainly proved his abilities with great presentation throughout the

season. He spent the previous four seasons as South Course Assistant Superintendent working with Zach Nicoludis, now with the USGA, a period of time in whichTony managed the irrigation system for our entire property.Tony is a graduate of the Penn State Turf program. Sean Whiston has been promoted to North Course Superintendent. He handled the duties of North Course Assistant Superintendent last season in his first year atWilmington Country Club. During that time as Senior Spray Technician as well, he was principally responsible for supervision of our plant protectant and fertilizer program including ordering, inventory monitoring, and daily application recording. Sean was responsible for all calibration of spray equipment and coordination of tank mixing for every spray operation performed. Previous to his employment here, Sean was Second Assistant Superintendent at Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, MD. Sean is a graduate of the University of Maryland Turf Program. Justin Lewis will be continuing his role as South Course Assistant Superintendent and has replaced Tony as basic irrigation system manager. He is entering his second season withWilmington Country Club. Before joining our team, Justin gained valuable experience as Assistant Superintendent at Bent Creek Country Club in Lititz, PA., and previously spending two seasons at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, PA while completing his turf education. He too is a graduate of the Penn State Turf program. Matthew Hilts is a new addition to our department and will be filling the role of North Course Assistant Superintendent under Sean Whiston. He spent the last three years at Ed Oliver Golf Club in Wilmington, DE during which time he too gained valuable experience not only in fundamental course maintenance operations, but also played a key role in the renovation/ construction project there which included new irrigation system installation and new retention ponds for additional water storage. Matt is currently pursuing his Turfgrass Management Degree at Rutgers University. There will be a Men’s Opening Cocktail Party on Friday, April 28th with a 1:00 pm shotgun start.This year the event will be held on the South Course and feature a Two Best Balls of Four format at 90% of handicaps in effect. This season we are offering our juniors the chance to spend their afternoon on the golf course. Whether they are looking to brush up on some skills and prepare for this summer season or just beginning to play the game, we are welcoming them to join us for some after-school fun!  The clinics will take place Tuesdays through Fridays and will go until Saturday, May 27th. Clinics will start at 3:30 pm every day and go until 5:30 pm. Each day will consist of a short lesson that will be focused around various topics such as putting, chipping, pitching and full swing. Following each lesson we will warm up and play some holes, applying what we learned that day on the course. The cost of the clinics per day is $25 or $75 for four days (these four days, or more, can be from any week of this program).
