Greeting Caregivers,

Welcome to the 2021 Family Caregiver Expo presented by Call for Caring, Inc in partnership with Impact Church. Today, we celebrate and honor CAREGIVERS for their heroic, tireless efforts when caring for a loved one. Thank you does not seem enough for someone who has provided physical care, created an atmosphere of love and support, and respected their loved one’s wish to the greatest extent possible. TODAY, when counting blessings, let us start with grateful praise for your caregiving heart! Over the last two years, the world has witnessed an unprecedented event, managing our day to day lives during the COVID 19 pandemic. Not only did the world come to a complete halt, but every family also experienced a change in their daily routine. Suddenly, people were faced with medical crisis, social and physical distancing, loss of jobs and loved ones. Over the last 19 months, Caregivers were faced with disruption of community based and volunteer support, and resources programs. During this time, families were faced with caregiving from a distance, relocating family members to and/or from assisted living or nursing homes to decrease the risk of illness or not being able to see each other. The pandemic created new caregiving dynamics for families from managing public health concerns, loved ones wants and needs, differing opinions about safe behaviors and the day-to-day stress associated with uncertainty and challenges of COVID 19.

Despite it all you survived! Doing the best you can with what you have available is a great way to give and receive care.

Once again, we are excited to offer a phenomenal opportunity to provide resources, virtual experiences, seminars, and educational resources designed specifically for YOU.

On behalf of the Atlanta Caregiver Expo Partners - IMPACT Church, Cigna, AARP, Pruitt Home First and Home Helpers North Atlanta, welcome to the 2021 Family Caregiver Expo.

Respectfully, The Atlanta Family Caregiver Expo Committee

Ask the Elder Law Attorney Robert M. Goldberg

West Point, 1982; University of Michigan Law School, 1990; Member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys & Accredited Veterans Administration Attorney Don’t Delay Planning After Diagnosis with Alzheimer’s Disease Question: I remarried 6 years ago and my new husband has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Is it too late to do any kind of planning? What kind of plans should we make? Answer: I’m very sorry you received such bad news with the holiday season right around the corner. Fortunately, many persons in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease are still able to think clearly and able to make sound decisions. At a minimum, your husband should plan for the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease by signing “advanced directives” – a health care power of attorney, HIPAA release, living will, and financial power of attorney. It is important to understand not all financial powers are the same. He may want to give his “agent” all the powers necessary to do Medicaid planning that may be needed. He should also sign a will and/or a trust naming the persons he wants to receive his assets when he dies. If your new husband has children from his first marriage, I recommend including them in any planning. To eliminate any dispute about his mental capacity I recommend having him evaluated by a neuropsychologist. Do not procrastinate. He may have many lucid years left. But, one never knows with Alzheimer's Disease. Also, don't neglect your own planning: revise your own documents so your husband will not have responsibilities he cannot perform. Make sure not to leave him the home or any money outright since he may need Medicaid to pay for nursing home care if you can no longer care for him in your home. A “Testamentary Supplemental Needs Trust” can be used to provide any of his care not paid for by the Medicaid program.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The national non-profit, Second Wind Dreams® (SWD ® ) was founded in 1997, growing out of the work of geriatric specialist P.K. Beville, M.S., who has served in eldercare since 1983. The organization’s name is derived from a novel, Second Wind , by Beville who wrote about the wonderful and colorful people who live and work in a nursing home. Over the last 20 years, Second Wind Dreams has made monumental strides to change the perception of aging through the fulfillment of dreams and the offering of educational programs that help us understand the challenges facing those with dementia.

The Dreams program serves over 600 eldercare communities around the world by making dreams come true on an average of six per day. In addition to fulfilling thousands of dreams, the non-profit has built an award-winning program that includes training and support for Dream Weavers, educational programs for eldercare professionals, a monthly newsletter, and ongoing publicity efforts with local and national media. This program is a part of the

Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives in many corporations nationwide.

In addition to the Dreams program, Second Wind Dreams is the home of the internationally recognized Virtual Dementia Tour® (VDT®). The VDT, created by Beville, is a scientifically proven method of training designed to build sensitivity and awareness in individuals caring for those with dementia. Presently in 20 countries and experienced by over 3 million people worldwide, the VDT is changing how dementia care is provided. Second Wind Dreams is recognized as the first in the United States to focus on enhancing the quality of life for elders and changing society’s perception of aging by making elder dreams come true and creating the patented educational program, The Virtual Dementia Tour. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit is governed by a Board of Directors that provides the guidance and support necessary for Second Wind Dreams to continue its mission and expand its impact. Financial support comes from individual contributions, memberships, eldercare industry associations, religious organizations, grants, corporate philanthropy, and revenue generated from the Virtual Dementia Tour.

Supporting Caregivers Supports Our Nation Gwenyth Johnson MS. RDN. LDN CEO Second Wind Dreams Caregivers are one of our most precious national resources. There are nearly 40 million caregivers providing care to older adults in the United States. Simply from an economic standpoint the value of this care is estimated at $500 billion annually. They are the backbone of our aging and long-term care health system. Once we understand this, the need for caregiver support is easy to understand. Caregiver stress is a primary issue and one that has multiple impacts. Caregiver stress occurs for any number of reasons. According to Rhonda Montgomery and her work developing Tailored Care for Caregivers®(TCARE®), caregivers’ identities can become confused and even change to identify with the position of care provider rather an individual. Identity confusion causes stress, as does the increased intensity of care provided over time, financial stress, and so on. As this increases the caregiver may find that they are considering placement for the loved one. Montgomery and her work maintain that the provision of resources to manage these stressors can help to prevent placement and reduce the physical and emotional impact on the caregiver. What are these resources and where to we connect with them? The good news is that there are supports in every community. Here in Georgia, we have a community aging network consisting of the State Unit on Aging and 12 Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs). This network provides direct services along with a statewide >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 9 Page 10 Page 11 Page 12 Page 13 Page 14 Page 15 Page 16 Page 17 Page 18 Page 19 Page 20 Page 21 Page 22 Page 23 Page 24
