SEPTEMBER 2019 the Beauty BOOK

Women are at a slight disadvantage here because their muscle mass is typically less than men’s. This means you need to eat less than your boyfriend or husband to maintain your weight. It also doesn’t mean you should avoid muscle-building exercises. On the contrary, at least a couple times a week, include a strength-training class or workout in your routine. This will help you build muscle and burn off your food more efficiently. When it comes to diets, don’t expect a miracle. You might find one you like — many people have success doing keto, paleo, or low-carb diets. You can try one of these, with the approval of your doctor, of course, but, ultimately, balance is key. Eating a lot of vegetables and focusing on lean proteins and whole grains is going to be more sustainable. If you’re a new mom, first off, congratulations! Continue to eat properly and take your prenatal vitamins. Get back to exercising as soon as you can. Maybe, at first, you can walk around the block with your baby. If you gained some extra pounds during your pregnancy, you’ll need to be strict now to get back to your regular weight. Eating a lot of carbs will only ensure you maintain your new weight. If you feel like you’ve been doing all the right things — eating balanced, proportional meals and exercising — and are still overweight, a hormone imbalance could be part of the issue. When we’re young, our bodies generally work pretty well. As we age, some of our functions start to slow down, including our production of estrogen and testosterone. That’s where hormone testing and hormone therapy can be helpful. If you can maintain a healthy weight, it will be much easier than trying to lose it year after year. Don’t use the holidays as an excuse. Be consistent, find a diet-and-exercise routine that works for you, and talk to your wellness team about treatments that can help you stay healthy and fit.

Weighting on a Miracle

Why We End Up Overweight and How to Stop It

Have you ever struggled with your weight? For many Americans, it’s a lifelong battle. I recently talked to a colleague of mine about this issue. We discussed how many people in the U.S. are 20–30 pounds overweight. “But why?” I wondered. My colleague had a good point: Each year during the holidays, we put on weight. Maybe it’s just a few pounds. In January, we try to lose it, but it’s tough to get rid of all of it. Over time, a pound here and two pounds there add up. As years fly by, the weight accumulates, and you end up with an extra 30 pounds weighing you down. There’s more than just appearance at stake here. Being overweight vastly increases your risk for cancer and many other diseases. It’s a more frequent cause of breast cancer than radiation. So, it’s crucial that we find a way to maintain a healthy weight.

Finding the Right Workout for Your Diet

How to Match Your Routine to Your Plate What you eat and how your body performs are two intimately linked aspects of your overall fitness. That’s why distance runners carb-load on spaghetti before marathons and yogis skip breakfast before a 105-degree Bikram class. However, this nuance is easy to neglect in a world of fad diets and food trends that move at whiplash speed. If you’ve jumped on the keto, vegan, or paleo bandwagons but are still slogging through the same workout routine, it’s time to take a closer look at your body’s needs and tailor your gym time accordingly. Here are a few tips for matching your diet to the optimal workout. Keto This high-fat, low-carb diet is currently booming among athletes who relish the opportunity to chow down on pork rinds and cheese (a perk that comes at the expense of giving up chips, bread, and most fruits). Shape magazine recommends moderate-intensity workouts for people eating keto because they won’t have the ample supply of glucose the body relies on for high-intensity exercises like sprints and HIIT. On the plus side, if you go keto, you’ll burn more fat during cardio because you won’t have a store of glycogen to compete with it as an energy source. Vegan Plant-based diets are generally associated with slow-moving exercises like yoga, but VegNews reports that short, high-intensity workouts are actually the best option for people who don’t eat meat or dairy. Choosing quick workouts means your body won’t use up as much protein (which vegans generally consume less of), and the ample glucose in a vegan diet is ideal for powering intense workouts like sprints, stairs, body-weight lifts, and CrossFit drills. Paleo The paleo diet is unique in that it actually comes with its own exercise plan, though many paleo eaters probably don’t know it. According to Paleo Leap, “The paleo lifestyle emphasizes natural movement (preferably outside) over machine- based exercises and brief but intense strength training workouts over extended sessions of steady-state cardio.” Above all, paleo advocates advise listening to your body and choosing a workout plan that leaves you feeling good.

Popular Diets And What They’re Really Like

FRESH FINDS Coming out of the summer season, you can capitalize on that bronzed look with one of 2019’s biggest beauty trends: total body glow, achieved with skin prep and luminizers. More products are available than ever in the body-glow department, with tones and varieties to match every type of skin. One of the best ways to achieve this look? Exfoliation. So, look to body scrubs to slough off dead skin and follow up by using hydrating moisturizers to give those luminizers the optimal surface to shine. Visit our BeautiStore for the latest in beauty care! Total Body Glow For the last couple years, the words “keto” and “paleo” have been floating around the interwebs. Promising better health and a slimmer waistline, these two diets have taken the world by storm. You’ve probably seen them out there, and maybe you’ve tried them or heard about the great results a friend got. Then, there’s Whole30, a 30-day diet that avoids sugar. So, what do these different diets entail? Are they really all that different? Paleo = high protein + low carb + high fiber Based on what may have been the diet our ancestors ate, paleo focuses on reducing carbs and eating more protein, fiber, and fats. Think plenty of meat, seafood, vegetables, fruit, and healthy fats like avocado. Dairy, whole grains, and legumes are out. Keto = high fat + high protein + low carb The keto diet aims to put the liver into the ketosis stage, when it’s burning fat as energy rather than carbs. This is accomplished by eliminating carbs and upping your fat intake. It’s similar to a paleo diet but slightly more restrictive regarding carbs, resulting in fewer vegetables and fruits being consumed.

Whole30 = whole foods – sugar Created by dieticians, Whole30 is intended to be an intensive, 30- day diet that aims to get the body off sugar and identify any food sensitivities you might have. By avoiding sugar, alcohol, dairy, soy, legumes, and grains, the diet attempts to reset the foods you crave. In comparison, keto, paleo, and Whole30 are all low-carb diets focused on cutting down the number of calories we consume from carbohydrates and increasing our fat and protein intake. Whole30 is more focused on reducing sugar for 30 days to return balance to the body, though all three diets restrict refined sugar. If none of these restrictive diets sound appealing, there are treatments we offer at Beautique, like ULTRASLIM, that help you slim down and keep off the weight. Talk to Dr. Sanchez or a Beautique team member to find out if one of our weight loss treatments is right for you.

3 Fall Trends to Try Now

New York Fashion week never fails to inspire a season’s worth of looks. And these aren’t just limited to the wardrobe; often, what happens behind the scenes inspires us most. Backstage, makeup artists are hard at work creating the perfect palette to combine with designers’ limit-pushing looks. Lucky for us, we can reap the beauty benefits of fashion without the need for a closet overhaul. Here are three forecasted fall trends you can test out right now. 1. Pumpkin Products There’s a reason pumpkin remains a popular ingredient fall after fall in things like lattes and face masks. This variety of squash contains enzymes and vitamins that make it the perfect addition to scrubs and masks that brighten and exfoliate the skin. Make it work for you: Try a nourishing facial that utilizes this prime ingredient — you can find pumpkin facials and products at Beautique Medical Spa! 2. ‘70s Inspired Looks This trend popped up in several shows in the form of flared pants, big hair in curls or afros, and winged eyeliner with touches of gold and purple.

Make it work for you: Play with aspects of the look rather than going full-on disco (unless you’re going to a themed party). Try a winged eyeliner with a touch of gold and purple shadow and play up your natural hair texture with volumizing products. 3. Liquid Exfoliators How do makeup artists get such a smooth palette to start with? They make sure a model’s skin is smooth and hydrated, and exfoliation is a key step in this endeavor. If you haven’t tried liquid exfoliators that utilize specialized acids, this is the season to do it.

Make it work for you: Turn to your esthetician to find treatments (like facial peels) that are right for your skin type and beauty goals.

What’s always on trend? Flawless skin. In the fall, opt for soothing seasonal products that give some extra attention to your most visible organ.
