WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO CATCH A BREAK

MAKE A GOAL TO TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF IN 2021

H ello, friends. I hope you’ve all had a wonderful holiday season! As the holiday break ends and we start to kick back into gear in the new year, it may seem tempting to take our ambitious New Year’s goals and push ourselves to the absolute limits of our motivation. Motivation is certainly not a bad thing! However, we should give ourselves a chance to ask: Are we pushing ourselves in a sustainable way?

And, since my kids go to sleep by 8 p.m., my wife and I will always have a couple hours to hang out and catch up on the day’s events.

Second, although it requires that I dedicate almost a full day to myself, I love playing golf. Why does golfing take a whole day out of me?

Well, the amazing (and frustrating) thing about golfing is how psychological it is. Golfers know that you can’t golf when you have a lot on your mind. The key to golfing is ignoring all your obstacles — bodies of water, trees, etc. — and calculating how you’re going to make the ball land in the hole. You don’t want your phone blowing up while you’re trying to golf. Work can be a huge distraction from the game, and I’ll always prefer to golf on an open day with nothing else scheduled. When I can’t get those days, I also love watching golf, and I catch a few games now and then. Some people get bored by it, but, for all its psychological and technical facets, I think it’s one of the most fascinating sports out there.

WITH EVERYTHING THAT’S BEEN GOING ON IN THE WORLD, THERE’S A GOOD CHANCE THAT YOU’VE BEEN MORE STRESSED THAN EVER, SO I HOPE YOU GIVE YOURSELF REGULAR CHANCES TO UNWIND TOO.”

I’ll admit: When I’m busy, it’s hard for me to take a break. I just want to go, go, go, then go some more. I’m sure many of my business-owner clients can relate when I say that I’m expected to wear a lot of hats. Trust me, I’m not complaining! However, I can say being a landscape designer while running a nursery simply keeps me pretty busy. Three months might pass before I realize: Hey, wait a second. I think I’m pretty overwhelmed right now. How can we possibly keep up with work while preventing ourselves from overworking?

First, it’s important to have daily activities that help you decompress, especially if you’re a parent. When you get home, your kids and your partner want you to be emotionally available for them. That’s certainly not a bad thing; and, in fact, being emotionally available doesn’t have to be draining. You just might have to allocate that time for them. For example, although I may be still concerned with work by the time I get home, I’ll always be available for my kids by dinner and while I’m washing dishes. I won’t lie — I love listening to an eclectic mix of Led Zepplin and ’80s love songs. (“Ramble On” will definitely play at my funeral!) After dinner, we’ll put my 18-month-old daughter, Juliet, in the dining room with her high chair while I wash dishes, and she starts to dance before I even turn on the music. It’s very cute and heart-melting for sure.

Lastly, ever since COVID-19 happened, my wife and I have been watching one or two “Seinfeld” episodes a day. It’s a perfect show for having a hearty belly laugh every day! We also love the Learning Channel because it’s shows help take our mind off work while still being super educational and relaxing. Anyway, with everything that’s been going on in the world, there’s a good chance that you’ve been more stressed than ever, so I hope you give yourself regular chances to unwind too, friends. Have a wonderful start to your year!

WE MAKE YOUR OUTDOOR AREAS BEAUTIFUL

Our Niche as a Full-Service Landscape Company CHOOSE BLG TO GET EVERYTHING YOU WANT

It can be a lot of work to coordinate your outdoor remodeling project. Jumping between several different teams and specialties, plus inconsistent pricing, can cost you

hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars. So why go to five different companies to work on your yard? Why not choose one company, one professional designer, and one team? While some landscapers claim to save you money, you might not save money at all. We wanted to offer a completely streamlined redesign experience that could make your dreams into reality — HGTV worthy, but not exclusive to television. That’s our secret at BLG Environmental: We do a lot

more multifaceted work than people expect. Not everyone realizes that an amazing landscape also needs hardscaping, irrigation, and outdoor lighting. We do it all!

If you need proof, take a peek at our campaign of newsletters. We’ve featured many products in this newsletter, from Wi-Fi-enabled lighting fixtures to pavers. Not every landscaping company can work with that technology or those materials.

Plus, having only one team to keep in contact with means a lot less stress for you. Not to mention it’s far easier to keep track of your project. At BLG Environmental, our

They say that your school days will be some of the best of your life. I don’t really know what they mean by that yet — having class (and a juice box) at 8 a.m. sharp is tough work. Luckily, digging up trenches isn’t anything like school. Besides showing up early, of course. But it’s different. Imagine doing multiplication tables at 8 a.m. Yeah, I’d rather be outside too. WHAT IT’S LIKE TO WORK IN THE TRENCHES GAVIN’S GUYS

You might be wondering: Why did you need to dig trenches, Gavin? Don’t you have

guys? Great question. You see, trenching is a unique strategy my dad is using for his tree nursery to feed and replant them. My guys trench all the time. But for my dad’s nursery, I gotta do it myself. It requires masterful precision, which my guys could do, but, hey, my dad gave me a free

ride last Saturday.

Anyway, it never hurts to get in the soil yourself, even if the trench you’re digging is deeper and taller than you. That’s a great metaphor for life, too. Man, I’m getting good at this newsletter thing. But, there’s another reason why I’m proud to be working in the trenches. My dad was right beside me. Whenever you find yourself working on a big project — or a big trench — sometimes it’s best that you don’t go at it alone. You might even need a guide to know how to accomplish what you want. My dad is a trench expert, so I know he’s the right guy on the job and I trust him easily. Sure, it might be his trench to begin with, but it still makes all the difference for your team when you don’t need to think twice about their qualifications. Trust can be a big component on a project done well and done fast.

Thanks so much for reading, friends. I can’t wait to come by again soon! Happy 2021!

OUR CLIENTS SAY IT BEST!

expert coordination helps make your outdoor home aspirations come true. Not only will your project be more streamlined, but it’ll also be

more affordable than hiring several companies. Landscaping projects have several components, and certain ones need to be completed before others. Of course, we don’t expect you to know the right timeline, that’s why we offer our expertise! Our expert craftspeople are on your side every step of the way and know just the right sequence of steps for your project.

We recently asked BLG Environmental Services to provide a back yard landscape that would include a play space for our three large dogs as well as a space for people to

enjoy being outside. The result is amazing — the creative layout included a paver patio and pergola as well as a water feature set amongst a variety of plants and also included the much needed play area for the dogs. Robert listened to us regarding our needs and desires and gave us a yard that is as gorgeous as it is functional!” -Lisa Searls

From expansive and ornate front yards to cozy gardens, we’ve done it all. Thank you for all your support. Our team is looking forward to continuing to serve you this year!

THE FIRST DOG TO WIN A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

Foxtrot’s Heroics With the World Food Programme

Just this past October, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to what can only be described as one the world’s goodest boys — a dog named Foxtrot, known also to his Instagram followers (of which there are nearly 7,000) as humanitarian_pup. While Foxtrot wasn’t responsible for improvements to auction theory (like Paul Milgrom and Robert Wilson, who won the Nobel Prize for economics) or for a standout career in writing poetry (like Louise Glück, who won the Nobel Prize for literature), this incredible canine shared the Nobel Peace Prize with the World Food Programme (WFP) for their work in combating world hunger. As the organization’s official mascot, Foxtrot shared in the win with the thousands of other WFP workers worldwide.

Foxtrot lives in Bangladesh (one of the most densely populated countries in the world) at a WFP outpost that works to supply one of the world’s largest refugee camps. According to an NPR article that spotlighted Foxtrot and the efforts made by his WFP humans, they worked not only to get food to refugees but also to flatten hillsides to make room for shelters for Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar. Foxtrot himself became part of the effort to combat world hunger during a WFP beach cleanup in his home country. Workers found him as a 4-week-old pup, and after failing to locate his owners, took him in as one of their own. For the past two years, Foxtrot has helped however he can to further the WFP’s efforts to end hunger in

Bangladesh. This usually includes accompanying his humans while they work, wearing an adorable custom-made WFP cape, and taking to Instagram to raise awareness about how anyone can join in the WFP’s mission. After learning that he and his humans had won the Nobel Peace Prize, Foxtrot didn’t waste the opportunity to share his excitement with his followers. “Woweee,” the pup said. “I … think it would be even more amazing if we didn’t need any peace prizes because peace was the status quo in our world.” If Foxtrot and his humans keep up the good work that won them the Nobel Peace Prize, it seems like that status quo could be within reach.
