First the Private Practice Journey

Although this time, we’re ready for it…

You know the story…

Howmany lives can we touch? Or people can we serve? How do we protect our team members? And leave a legacy? Along the journey, we’ve likely built something of value in the marketplace. Maybe we weren’t necessarily planning on it - but nowwe have a practice that’s worth something.

An ambitious and young Physical Therapist wants to change the world with PT.

She or he sets out to change the world (or at least their area) with their own unique brand of high quality of care PT. Reality quickly sets in as the young PT didn’t know what he didn’t know - being an amazing PT in the clinic does not equate to being an amazing business owner. Hiring the right staff, negotiating leases and employee compensation, billing, financial management, managing a growing team, marketing - those things were not part of the Physical Therapy education and degree. The young PT eventually compromises to a financial focus. “Maybe I can’t change the world as quickly as I thought - but if I just made double my staff PT salary (let’s say $140k), then owning my own practice is worth it.” This is a significant moment most of us face in one of our first major crossroads in the Private Practice journey.

What Should I Read If I’m Thinking About Selling One Day?

For mindset of the transformation you’re about to go through as a business owner - I’d start with Built to Sell: Creating a Business That Can Thrive Without You by John Warrillow. This is a quick fiction read with a handful of important mindset principles you’ll want as you go through the process. For taking your financial game to the next level - the simple answer is Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits! 4 Keys to Unlock Your Business Potential by Greg Crabtree. That’s the easy answer. For many - if you’re not well read in business finance principles and are looking for something more basic, it’s Rich Dad’s Increase Your Financial IQ by Robert Kiyosaki. For personnel - sticking with Who by Geoff Smart and Randy Street. This is the #1 problem in any business to solve and stay ahead of. The playbook contained within works. For marketing - well, if you’re reading this - you’ve likely heard more marketing book recommendations from me than you’ll ever need. So let’s go to operations. For basic business operations, go with Traction by Gino Wickman. For advanced business operations, go to Verne Harnish’s Scaling Up. If you need to build systems, it’s Work the System by Sam Carpenter. I promised 5 and gave you 7. Wishfully thinking that’s more over-delivering than overwhelming… Realize the key is this - the more you have your teams and systems honed in, the more valuable your practice is going to be in the marketplace. Almost counter- intuitively, you’ll be employing more people and helping more people as well - leaving a bigger impact in the world.

Then we figure it out.

We figure out how to build a practice of value - or at least earn more - usually by working 65-80 hour weeks. (This is really 2 full time jobs - think about it). We can put up with this so long before we start to feel it. Maybe we realize our body can’t possibly do this for the next 20 years…our energy and motivation dips a bit.

Now we hit the TIME crossroads.

“How can I keep earning decent money and keep my doors open - but not work like this? I’d be happy if I was just working 40-50 hours a week.”

Then we figure TIME out.

We get our schedule under control through disciplined time management. We start hiring and training better team members (if we didn’t get lucky early). We start learning and building better business systems - so our practice doesn’t completely rely on us. We replace ourselves.
