6 Easy Steps To Reducing Falls Here are six easy steps you can take today to help your older loved one reduce their risk of a fall: 1. Enlist their support in taking simple steps to stay safe. Ask your older loved one if they’re concerned about falling. Many older adults recognize that falling is a risk, but they believe it won’t happen to them or they won’t get hurt. 2. Discuss their current health conditions. Find out if your older loved one is experiencing any problems with managing their own health. 3. Ask about their last eye checkup. If your older loved one wears glasses, make sure they have a curent prescription and they’re using the glasses as advised by their eye doctor. 4. Notice if they’re holding onto walls, furniture, or someone else when walking. A trained physical therapist can help your older loved one improve their balance, strength, and gait through exercise. Make sure to follow their advice. 5. Talk about their medications. If your older loved one is having a hard time keeping track of medicines or is experiencing side effects, encourage them to discuss their concerns with their doctor and pharmacist. Suggest that they have their medications reviewed each time they get a newprescription.

PATIENT SPOTLIGHTS

“I have more confidence in walking!” Success Story: Leota Bowen “This has been a wonderful experience. Before coming here I was having a difficult time with my balance and mobility. I could not walk down a narrow hall without touching the walls for balance. I could not scoop down to pick up my shoes without losing my balance. It was difficult to walk across grass. I could not sit long periods of time. Now I can do most of these things with little or no problems. I have more confidence in walking, in standing, and bending down to pick my shoes up.”

“My awareness of the body function of feet and legs is so much better!” Success Story: Robert Dure “Before coming here, I had fallen twice within 3 weeks, walking to the car once in the driveway and carrying groceries from the car to the house. Since receiving therapy sessions, my confidence has increased greatly with no indications of falling. My awareness of the body function of feet and legs is so much better.”

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Hi, my name is Joe Lucio. I grew up on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. I am new to the area, and have been living in Valparaiso a little over a year. My wife, Jamie, and I moved here last July. My mom is a nurse and when deciding on a career, I wanted to follow in her footsteps. I was going to school to become a nurse, however when working with the geriatrics population as a Certified Nursing Assistant, I became more interested in exercise and wellness for the elderly population. That’s when I became very passionate for physical therapy, and wanted to pursue my career in physical therapy. My favorite hobbies include fishing, playing sports, going to White Sox games, going to baseball card shows with my father and doing anything outside to enjoy a nice day. I look forward to meeting you!
