Smart People

The Smart People of Tamarin are men and women who…

...

shake

up

conventional

thinking. Like Corine, Sandhya and Virginie, who have made a career in the predominantly male construction industry. ... constantly innovate. Like Johan Gallet, who turns algae from our lagoons into an invaluable resource. ... take care of others. Like the employees of Le Pont du Tamarinier and Cheshire Home Tamarin, who support vulnerable families and disabled people.

... promote circular economy. Like Marie Anne Perrier and Anik Bergonzoli, who organise flea markets. Cap Tamarin Smart & Happy Village focuses on education to foster a new generation of great citizens. We tell you more about this in our special report on the Smart People component of our smart city.

We hope you enjoy this issue.

Let's meet

Construction These women who pave the way

In a predominantly male-dominated industry, Corine, Sandhya and Virginie prove that gender doesn’t matter when it comes to skills and added value!

Today Corine is the intermediary between property developers and stakeholders of the different projects. She is responsible for obtaining permits from local authorities and coordinating with land surveyors, architects and engineers. What she appreciates the most in her job is the ability to build a network, to meet with new people and to give life to projects.

Corine Grizzell Administration Officer

After starting her career as a Project Coordinator inhotel construction, Corine changed course to become a Personal Assistant in the cosmetics industry, but over the past six years, she has returned to her first love: getting real estate projects off the ground.

Let's meet

Sandhya Suddul Project Manager

Sandhya plays a key role in the management and implementation of the Group’s projects. Her job consists of daily monitoring of site management and ensuring that technical objectives, suchas delivery deadlines and budget, are reached. Sandhya began her career at Keystone Project Management, where her passion for that particular field developed. During her career, she never stopped training, culminating into aMasters inProject Management. She enjoys this field because it is dynamic, there are constant challenges to overcome and the ultimate satisfaction of obtaining results andgetting things done motivates her to excel.

Virginie André Project Coordinator

Virgine, a real-estate lawyer and legal expert in town planning and construction, joined the Cap Tamarin team in September of this year. Her first missions consist of improving the client experience and participating in the delivery of newprojects, fromthe administration till the handing over of keys to the new owners. Attracted to property matters since her university days, today, she enjoys building new homes and lifestyles that are rooted in time. In this new role, one of her challenges will be to align the requirements of the construction industry with the wishes of marketing.

Sealife Organics When the sea nourishes the land

Let's meet

Sea life

Sealife Organics was launched during the first lockdown by Luc-André Gallet and his son Yohan. This small, innovative, environmentally friendly and 100% local enterprise is based in Tamarin.

What exactly do you offer ?

Why algae as a raw material ?

we have developed a blend of organic materials that produces a high quality compost

We offer seaweed-based natural products like compost, fertilisers and potting mix. Other ideas are under development.

Tell us more about how your products are made. We wait for the algae to wash up on the coast to recover them because taking them directly from the sea would damage the marine ecosystem. Gardenwaste and manure also collected from individuals. We can’t disclose our recipe, but we can say that Seaweed is a natural source of trace elements. After some research, it was found that no one was exploiting this resource on the island. It is also about turning a problem into a solution: removing algae that are a form of visual and odor nuisance and using them to nourish the earth in a healthy way.

Who did you create these solutions for ?

For individuals and farmers who want to reduce their use of chemicals as much as possible andgo organic. We also advocate for food self-suff iciency in Mauritius.

How did this project get started ? I had wanted to start a business with my father for a long time. I studied to become a pilot but the pandemic turned everything upside down and the family project became a priority.

Let's meet

Tamarin isn’t all seaand surf. It is also home to abloomingart scene. Along the coastal road, in the alley leading to the bay, in hotels or at bus stops, eye-catching murals have been splashed around town. We had a chat with three of the artists behind them.

Evan Sohun Illustrator

“In 2015, The Bridge Eco-Arts Festival was organised in Tamarin by Trimetys Group. Raymond Levantard, Julia Carosin, ArmandGachet and myself, among other artists, were given some space on the walls near the bay to paint on. It was my first time painting live and on that scale! I camped out on the beach for two days, while working on one of Toudim’s (my rabbit-like character) first public appearances. It was such a lovely moment of exploration and discovery!”

evansohun

Kim Siew Founder of Lakaz d'Art

“In 2018, Lakaz d'Art was invited to add a youthful touch to Veranda Tamarin Hotel. We had seven artists, three days, and multiple walls on which to depict our vision of the region. It was one of our first projects, and what a blast it was! Apart from three guiding themes (sea, surf&jazz), therestwas totally improvised. Imagine a band having a jam session and you'll get the idea. The combination of our different stylesmade for a colourful pieceof art that calls for exploration."

lakazart

Élizabeth de Marcy Chelin-Chabert Founder of My Pop-Up Store

“My Pop-Up Store painted three bus stops along the coastal road of Tamarin. Their designs hint at funny scenes that locals have surely come across: Tamarin's goats hanging out at those same bus stops! Next, we'd like to develop a collaborative project to adorn the walls along the main road. The idea behind vilaz coloriaz is to have artists draw a contemporary mural and leave it blank for people from the village to colour in. If anyone would like to help set this project in motion, we are still looking for ways to finance it...”

Home Cheshire Tamarin

Together

A West Coast institution that needs your help!

C heshire Home Tamarin opened its doors in 1964 to care for male survivors of a polio epidemic in Mauritius. 57 years later, it’s home to 17 disabled men and women. The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Ginette Lan Yee Chiu, tells us what makes this place so special. “We’re not like any other home in Mauritius”, says Ginette with pride. “We want to give our residents a voice and a life that’s actually enjoyable”. Since she took over in 1977 after managing the Mauritius Red Cross for years, Ginette has made it hermission togive the residentsmore agency. They learn new skills, they exercise, and their opinions and preferences matter. For instance, they get to choose what to eat on special occasions (“a barbecue!”, as someoneonce instructedGinette) andwhat gifts theywould like for Christmas. Before the COVID crisis, they enjoyed regular outings and events – and once even made it to Rodrigues!

But Ginette and her team are now facing financial difficulties. Between changes to CSR laws and the pandemic, which prevents them from organising fundraising events such as bingo nights, they are having to rely only on government assistance to provide for their residents and pay their carers.

Help Cheshire Home! Want to help? You canmake a financial contribution but also donate second-hand clothes, accessories and even make-up! If you have the time, why not lend a helping hand in the vegetable patch, give someone ahaircut or teach the residents anewskill? COVIDpermitting, lending the home your car for an outing or pushing one of the residents to Sunday mass in a wheelchair are great ways to help too!

C ap Tamarin regularly hosts and Anik Bergonzoli to offer a second life to old (often hoarded) items. Are you planning to take part in the next one? Here are some of their top tips to make your sale a smashing success ! Tips for a successful garage sale Vide Greniers, a flea market organised by Marie Anne Perrier

Quality is key

At flea markets, people expect a dignified shopping experience. You may be tempted to get rid of torn clothes or damaged objects, but it won’t reflect well on your stall. Be respectful and only put items in good condition up for sale. And remember that clean objects and ironed clothes sell better !

Prepare a checklist

Make sure you have everything you need ahead of time, including a chair or stool, a calculator, a pen, a piece of paper or receipt book and price tags. “We take sanitation very seriously”, add the organisers, “so be sure to bring your mask and some hand sanitizer for your customers”.

Start collecting items now

Make it a habit to collect and sort items on a regular basis. Go through the things in your house first, and then start asking friends and family if they have anything to sell.

Bring a helping hand !

It’s much easier to deal with customers and take a break if someone is there to help you out !

“Don’t limit yourself to clothes”, suggest Marie Anne and Anik. “People are looking for good deals on all kinds of stuff”. Accessories, bedding, electronics, fishing equipment, tools, musical instruments, vintage objects… The sky's the limit! Think outside the box!

A moment in time

When time comes to a standstill

Did you know? There used to be a second bridge in Tamarin. This bridge was built a long time ago and could be found further down the river, but it was destroyed by a cyclone. In the present day, we can still find a glimpse of its ruins blended with the lush nature around.

At the entrance of the village of Tamarin, a metallic bridge, built in 1934, stands proudly: the Tamarin Bridge. It has withstood the test of time. This emblematic structure is a testimony to the impressive work of its engineers. More than 50 metres long, this bridge is the only way for the inhabitants to get access to the rest of the island. It is, however, quite narrow and restricted to vehicles that weigh less than 10 tons.

The credit goes to Vintage Mauritius for the beautiful photo. Visit their website to find out more.
