DeSoto City Lights The City Is Asking For Your Cooperation in Conserving Water The City of DeSoto recently called on residents to conserve on outside water usage as a part of our Drought Contingency Plan that kicks in when water usage goes beyond 80% of capacity for a set period of time. There are many things that residents can do to conserve water, but the first tier of response under DeSoto’s required Drought Contingency Plan centers around outdoor water use and finding ways to scale it back.

The most impactful immediate steps that you can take to reduce water consumption include:  Limit the irrigation of landscaped areas to no more than once every five (5) days  Limit outdoor watering to between the hours of 9 pm and 5 am.  Set automatic sprinkler systems to provide thorough but infrequent watering. Rain

shutoff valves can prevent watering in the rain.  Use drip irrigation systems for bedded plants, trees and shrubs, or use soaker hoses or sprinkler hoses turned upside-down.  Water slowly for better absorption and never water on windy days.  Do not scalp lawns when mowing during hot weather. Taller grass holds moisture better. A better-looking lawn will result if grass is mowed often so that only ½ or ¾ inch is cut off.  Use a watering can or hand-water with the hose in small areas of the lawn that need more

frequent watering, (near walks or driveways or in especially hot, sunny spots).  Do not clear walks and driveways with the hose. Use a broom or blower instead.  When washing the car, use a bucket of soapy water and turn the hose on only for rinsing. Thank you for your attention to this important request. By working to temporarily cut back DeSoto’s water usage, the Public Utilities Department will be able to ensure that you and your neighbors have the water needed to get through this summer season.
