DeSoto City Lights How Would You Like to See Community Development Block Grant Funds Spent?

As a part of the City of DeSoto’s Annual Action Plan for the expected $296,637 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, DeSoto hosted two public meetings, the first Town Hall at the DeSoto Senior Center, and the second in the evening at Council Chambers. The Town Hall informed citizens of the opportunity the grant provides and received community feedback on how the funds should be allocated. Patricia Santa Cruz from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development presented the history and future of the CDBG in DeSoto. The City of DeSoto has been a recipient of this grant since 2015 to assist residents, business owners, and community members. In the last fiscal year, DeSoto received $320,000 which funded transportation assistance, side-walk and homeowner repairs, and down payment assistance for homebuyers. Santa Cruz indicated that the CDBG funds are allocated to Public Service projects (15%), Administration cost (20%), and other projects that are funded due to a low/moderate income populations (65%).

A central part of the Fiscal Year 2022 Community Development Block Grant Action Plan is citizen participation.

At the Senior Center, citizens were able to fill out surveys, ask questions, and make comments about the CDBG funds. At the evening Town Hall, questions were asked regarding what constitutes as low/moderate income, what programs were successful, and why the meeting was conducted. Santa Cruz answered these questions and provided additional information. Recording of the evening Town Hall can be found at https://fb.watch/dIgErGTr3L/. More information and the online survey can be found on the City's CDBG site, and paper copies of the survey can be picked up from the Action Center in City Hall.
