BEATING ABSENTEEISM DURING THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Recent research by Kronos reveals that more than a third of employees (35 per cent) expect the European Championships to cause more absenteeism than Wimbledon (18 per cent) and the Rio Olympics (11 per cent) combined.Martin Noone, managing director at Legal & General Workplace Health & Protection says that absenteeism within a workforce has the potential to seriously affect a business’s productivity levels if not properly addressed by the employer.

‘Recent Legal & General research has shown that absenteeism costs UK businesses on average over £120,000 per year and nearly seven out of ten employers we surveyed said absenteeism was a growing issue for their businesses,’ he adds.

HIGHEST RATE OF ABSENCE ON MONDAYS

Employee absences on Mondays are almost double those on Fridays, statistics from ELAS Business Support have revealed. In an analysis of time off taken in the first half of the year, the employment law specialist found that the consistent attendance rates throughout the remainder of the week suggest people

might be taking advantage of an extended weekend.

About 21.4% of all workers polled called in sick on a Monday, compared with around 12.2% on Fridays.

February has been identified as having the highest average rate of absenteeism across the first half of the year in a survey of 8,550 people from 68 companies.

SICK DAY FIGURES – THE UK DOESN’T LIKE MONDAYS!

New statistics published this week by ELAS Business Support show sickness rates for the first six months half of this year – and they make for interesting reading. 8,550 people from 68 companies across the UK were surveyed. These rates only show sickness absence overall and do not take account of the reasons for sickness.

The average sick day rate was calculated by taking the total daily absence rate for each month and dividing it by the number of weeks in the month. January, March and May each had five weeks and, therefore, a higher overall absence rate but the weekly numbers paint a different picture.
