Mother’s Day is by far the most celebrated holiday of the year. Honoring love of country or an historic political figure never seems to match up to the attention of Mom. There is a sense of duty on Mother’s Day. From the moment we wake up, until we are ready to turn in, we work hard to make it special. A day to show our appreciation for the person who has the toughest job on earth…balancing family and for most, their careers. What is it about Mom that war- rants such pampering and attention on this day? The answer is clear. She delivers life; the one that carries and nurtures from our birth till her death. A life's journey that has driven her to care for us; to encourage and devote her life's work to us. It's a big job to keep it all tied together. Mom is the iconic anchor with its deeply rooted foundation that keeps family values intact. One of my earliest memories of Mom was her coming to open school day. It was a time when parents had the chance to observe our class, while it

was being conducted. I was eight years old. As my mother entered the classroom, I remember saying to myself, how beautiful she looked! How blessed I was to have such a Mom. I'd say to my buds, "Yup, that's my Mom," as I proudly showed her off. Though my mother worked a full time job, there was always a deliciously prepared home cooked meal on the table every single day. It was important back then, for the family to join at dinner time. Yes, we live in a different world today; It's getting even harder today to be a Mom. I also remember the times when I was unsure of myself. During moments when there was doubt about my ability. She helped me realize and understand that life has it's obstacles. Mom always was reassuring that with a positive attitude, new doors of opportunity would open. For me, it was her belief in me and encouragement that has left an indelible mark on my character. Mom was my best friend. She was my confidant, my support system. The one person above all, that would unselfishly sacrifice her time and love to nurture. The maternal mission of Mom is to keep her family strong. It is why I raise my arm and proudly salute all Moms for their love, devotion and faith in keeping the sanctuary of family alive. T here are so many lash enhancing beauty treatments available today, why not swap out your mascara and those sticky drug store falsies for one of these longer lasting options? The most popular trends today are eyelash lifting, tinting and extending. Each process varies, but all are designed to make your lashes appear thicker, darker or longer – and they’re 100% smudge- proof. Not only do they accentuate your eyes, but eyelash treatments can also simplify your daily make-up routine and will last for many weeks with proper care. A fairly new trend is the lash lift . It’s less costly than a full set of extensions and doesn’t require the use of any dyes or adhesives on the eyes. The process involves the use of a small silicone curling rod with a solution, sort of like a perm used on your hair. The result is like that of a manual eyelash curler. It won’t add volume or color to your eyelashes, but the curl of a lift can last for weeks. Another quicker and less costly way to enhance your lashes is to have them tinted. For an eyelash tint , a semi- permanent color is brushed onto your lashes for 15 to 30 minutes. The darker color gives the illusion of wearing

mascara, however, tinting does not add length or volume. It may sound simple, but don’t try this at home! Some people find the use of dyes near the lashes to be irritating, so this may not be the best option for those with skin or eye sensitivity. The gold standard for the most dramatic lashes of all is a full set of eyelash extensions . What used to be the exclusive treatment for celebrities is now available to anyone who desires long, dark, luxurious lashes. Eyelash extensions come in various lengths and thickness; your technician can recommend different styles to suit your eye shape. Applied individually with a special adhesive at the base of each lash, the extension process is not a quick

procedure and can take up to two hours. However, the results are the most intense and can last for many weeks with care. The lashes fall off naturally or you can extend the life of your set by returning for a touch-up (which takes less time and costs less than the initial application). You can also return to your stylist to have them removed at any time. It’s important to find a beauty technician with skill and experience. Read reviews, get recommendations and look at before and after photos. It’s always a good idea to go in for a consultation and discuss any concerns you might have beforehand. You can also ask for a patch test to see if you have any allergic reactions to the glues or dyes.

bars for pull-ups and hanging leg raises or the swings to strengthen your legs—this will get your heart pumping. Add in squats and reverse lunges while you’re there. Bodyweight exercises are effective for building muscle and burning fat; the beauty of these is that they can be performed anywhere. When you exercise outdoors, you get the soothing benefits of being in nature, the mood-enhancing effects of the sun, and if you’re surrounded by greenery and trees, you’re likely to have cleaner oxygen to breathe in. For an added bonus, outdoor workouts are free. So, get your favorite sneakers and hit the pavement to burn calories, build muscle, and boost your mood.

As the warmer weather approaches, you might find yourself drawn to being outside, for a good reason. The sun is a natural mood booster, and there are studies to prove it. One 2013 study published in the “Innovations In Clinical Neuroscience” journal found that serotonin levels were higher when people were exposed to sunlight. Serotonin is one of the “happy chemicals,” or

been needing. Many people are still leery of getting back into a crowded gym, and the springtime offers prime weather for taking that workout outside. Sure, a light jacket may be necessary, but the benefits are worth covering up. Walking, jogging, and running outside won’t just burn calories; if you pick a time when the sun is shining, your exercise routine will give you more of a double mood boost. Warmer, brighter weather, and chirping birds have a way of lifting the spirits. However, you don’t have to limit your workout to cardio. Strength training outdoors is easier than you may think. At the beach, you can enjoy the ocean breeze as you practice mindful yoga. Or, you can feel the sand beneath your forearms as you practice 30 second planks. Walking lunges are another great movement to perform in the sand, no weights needed. Just find a bench and get your step-up on. Can’t get to the beach? Find a playground! You can use the monkey

neurotransmitters released by your brain when exercising.

Speaking of exercising…

Combining exercise with the great outdoors may be just the boost you’ve

T he name in itself is enough for the passion- ate foodie to find out why Vespa Chophouse has become a popular mainstay for its pa- trons. Its wooded interior, inviting bar with over- sized richly appointed red booths all add to its warmth and class. An added bonus is a private party room that can accommodate up to 100 guests. Once you’ve had the chance to peruse their menu, you’ll find no shortage of creative dishes, combined with traditional southern Italian fare, crafted to appeal to a broad spectrum of cus- tomers. Notable for being an Italian Steakhouse, all adds to the allure of Vespa Chophouse. This evening, our starters included the Arancini Siciliani; app size rice balls with a crispy exterior, yet creamy within had a melt in your mouth tex- ture. No doubt, quite popular. Mussels Rosso; a spicy Fra Diavlo with thin garlic crostini has the kick without overwhelming the palate. It was so good that once finishing mussels, I aced the sauce from the rice balls and began to dunk the arancini in the devil’s elixir. One word…heaven. An oxy- moron, but true. Following suit was the Rocket Salad; Crisp, fresh and a perfect palate cleanser for what was to come. Sharing mains meant ordering a meat, pasta and seafood dish. Socially, it just makes the entire

experience so much more enjoyable. Besides, who wants to miss out on tasting everything! For me, the star attraction was their 36 oz, 27 day aged Porterhouse; presented on a hot plate, served sliced. The charred exterior was at a perfect medium rare temp. Not over salted, (like most steakhouses) allowing the it’s intense flavor profile to come through. The Pasta Con Rapini; a tra- ditional dish that Nonna used to bring from the kitchen be- fore the meats. A Cavatappi (cork screw) pasta combined with crumbled sausage, broccol i rabe, Sici l ian ol ives, in a garlic and oil complimented the steak perfectly. Don’t forget the pecorino! Our final entree was cleverly presented; Gam- beri Oreganta; Four jumbo shrimp placed on a bed of sautéed spinach, served in a bread crumb sauce was skillfully pre- sented like soldiers in a row. Plump and perfectly cooked, yet light enough to compliment the heavier beef and pasta offerings. The Rainbow Cookie Cake wi th a scoop of rainbow cookie ice cream had a light texture and tasted as if it came fresh from the bakery. With a cappuccino, sealed the deal. For the entire experience, our server Cory was right on par. He must have checked in on us 6-7 times to be sure that every dish delivered met expectations. Good food matters, but without great service, it’s not a pleasurable experience. Michael Lomanto, who also owns Harley’s American Grille of Farmingdale has dedicated his livelihood in delivering the best in restaurant hospitality. Thumbs up Vespa Chophouse!

The secret to his success is not linked to the most talked about phenomenon of visual social media nor the new concept of doctor shopping online. It is quite the opposite. His secret is the rudimentary practice of individualized patient care without the current trend of outsourcing care to other surgeons under his umbrella nor any visual social media phenomenon. These new age concepts that the current literature speaks to only gets you so far as a surgeon that relies on visual results. The intent and care of Dr. David Pincus can cer- tainly make an impression on a patient at their con- sultation, but the true talent of a surgeon can only speak to you through the results of their work. As the saying goes, his results speak volumes. Dr. Pincus does not believe in a mold or ideal of the human shape. His objective is to empower his patients by helping them achieve their individualized concept of beauty and confidence. The success of Pincus Plastic Surgery is due to the unfiltered, unadulterated talent of a surgeon that was cultivated by 18 years of training in Miami, Boston, and Paris in order to achieve the expertise needed to be extraordinary. For Dr. Pincus, it most certainly did not take a decennary to become a trailblazer in his area of expertise. But as we all know, giving yourself the title of an expert in any field is completely differ- ent from proving your brilliance and talent. Dr. Pincus has most certainly proven his title as an innovator and continues to persevere. After 3 years of practicing in Smithtown, Long Island, Dr. Pincus is now opening up his 2nd office in Boca Raton, Florida.

By Marc Piperno

T he road to plastic surgery success is paved with names that have been in the industry for decades, revered for their craft, and labelled as innovators. However, with the onset of an evolving social time follows an evolution of beauty and ideal- ism. The next generation of visionaries are making their mark with the understanding that beauty is no longer coupled with the concept of perfection or fits a mold, that of a “model.’ As the next generation takes the helm of plastic surgery royalty, Dr. David J. Pincus has soared into stratospheric success by being at the forefront of innovative, impeccable work that has been catered to the most important component of any plastic surgeon’s career-- his patients. Dr. David Pincus conceived Pincus Plastic Surgery in 2018 and has since risen to colossal accomplish- ment. His patient clientele has increased over 700%. He is one of the most sought after surgeons in New York with a fully booked surgical schedule through May 2022 and an extensive waiting list eagerly antic- ipating a cancellation. Many have questioned how it is possible to sky- rocket to such a level of success in this short period of time when Pincus Plastic Surgery is a practice where one surgeon does it all. The answer goes back to the most essential and simple way of practicing medicine- sheer talent and individualized patient care.

Times change, in fact, in decorating change is inevitable. Otherwise, how would the industry stay in business? In my four plus decades as an interior designer, I’ve seen styles and colors come and go. Now finally, I’m seeing the demise of grey. Not that I dislike grey (I like all colors), but enough is enough! I’ve always cautioned my clients to select what resonates with them, not just what’s “in” which will eventually be “out”. In the 80’s, grey was hot just like now, but soon it will be gone for perhaps another few decades. This brings me to a story about a lovely couple whose home we renovated and decorated in Smithtown years ago. While the house was pristine, we heard from these clients recently requesting a small redo. They wanted some upholstery – rug cleaning and paint touch up – which we were happy to oblige. No, it wasn’t grey. The colors were of their choice and came out of timeless rug selections they had made. Interestingly enough, the colors they chose were some of the new “in” trend selections of this year! Moreover, their style of furniture was classic and comfortable – and still is. How do I know? My young design assistant (involved of course in this project), was shocked to learn how long ago this project was completed and how little it took to “refresh”.

The point of this story? If you’re a “flavor of the month” kind of person in terms of style and color, I hope you really like decorating, because you will be doing a lot of it to keep up with the changing trends. However, if you are planning a redo that will have you done for a while – consider classic and timeless as your watchwords – available in any style and color that makes you happy. No matter what, one thing is for sure, whatever you choose will always come back in style— eventually!

Lucky for me, my mom is low-maintenance. She enjoys fresh, local food preferably with large quantities of vegetables. The ma- triarch of my family is a runner and avid CrossFitter. She also works locally as a registered nurse. She enjoys her eggs every morning, and salads each evening. On the *very* rare occasion she goes out for a meal, she will usually pick Thai food. My rec- ommendations for her are usually Sawasdee Thai Elevated, Lemonleaf, Raan Thai or Sawadee Thai (our local staple). Al- though my mom may be the exception to the rule, I am sure there are plenty of moms out there who enjoy a healthy meal as well. My other favorite, local healthier spots include Wild Side, Lota Veco, The Purple Elephant, Tula Kitchen, Rustic Root, and Tiger Lily Café . If your mom is a foodie, and looking for a good ‘cheat meal’, I recommend Thyme, Salumi, Love Lane Kitchen, The Shed in Sayville, and/or One10 . For something a bit more upscale, try Bijou, Jonathan’s or Sage Bistro . Check your neighborhood fa- vorites for Mother’s Day menus, and specials. Whether you’re dining out or in, make sure you put some thought into Mother’s Day this year. Make a reservation in advance (or aim to prepare/cook an unforgettable spread), and bring along a local bouquet of fl owers. After all, our moms have supported us, fed us, and showed up for us...365 days a year.

E very year as Mother’s Day approaches, I’m giddy with ex- citement to celebrate my mom. Gifts often seem mediocre, no matter how extravagant they may be. The one thing I am sure of is that a good meal provides the perfect way to start the day. If you’re choosing to cook at home for mom, my go-to spread is brunch. Think local bagels from Country Hot in Northport , wild lox, homemade herbed cream cheese, thinly sliced red onion, tomatoes, and capers. Serve with passion fruit mimosas or spicy Bloody Mary’s for a kick. Presentation is equally important, so check your favorite food blogs for a surplus of visual tips. If you’re in the mood to serve up something hot, I recommend Challah French Toast with fresh berries and mascarpone, with a side of chicken sausage, or a homemade sweet potato and chorizo hash, served with eggs. Poached eggs are a bit more dif fi cult to master, but they certainly dress up any entrée. Whether your mom enjoys breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner – the day is likely to book up quickly, so make your reservations (or start planning your meal) before it’s too late!
