cleanser. Once that shower is done, step out and pat your face and body dry – no rubbing. Patting dry will also help lock in moisture that rubbing will pull away. Winter is the season to take extra care with moisturizing your skin. Start with sunscreen, the one thing most people forgo in the cold. Winter sunlight can damage your skin, so the added protection will serve you well. Next, move on to a serum and moisturizer that contains a thicker consistency and provides more hydration. For a fresh look, I’m partial to using a Vitamin-C serum to brighten and tighten the skin. There are many great options out there so choose the one that best suits your skin type. For daily moisturizer, I’m using a new formula (Ole Henriksen StrengthTrainer Peptide Boost Moisturizer, $48) that feels great and is keeping my skin well-nourished. (I love getting a good recommendation.) Be sure to use a gentle eye moisturizer all around the eye area to avoid premature aging. Finally, add in a weekly mask that is designed to enrich the skin with loads of moisture. Don’t forget to moisturize your body every day. If your skin is particularly dry, twice a day is a must. Aveeno’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion is great if you’re on a budget and excellent on the skin. Everyone needs a little extra TLC here and there. For your skin, both face and body, winter is that time to pamper yourself. Opt for lush, rich moisturizers all winter long. Your skin will thank you as the days get longer and the temperatures rise.

The cold weather each winter brings the annual skin care dilemma. How do you protect your skin from the harsh, cold outdoor weather followed by the dry heat indoors? Outdoor conditions tend to leave the skin raw, red, and in pain, while home and office heating units dry out the skin, drawing out natural moisture. It’s a vicious cycle that we repeat daily, but can be prevented with a few changes to your skin care routine. First things first, you need to hydrate from the inside out. For all of you who drink the recommended 64oz of water daily...kudos! For everyone else, this is the season to add to your water intake. Your cells will be more nourished and fight the cold from the cellular level. A humidifier will add moisture to the air in your space (whether home or office). This will do wonders for your skin – both body and face. For an added boost on the face, consider a mister to open the pores. A good friend of mine is a dedicated user of Aira’s Ionic Face Steamer as part of her daily and weekly routine. Hot showers may seem like a great way to add moisture to your skin all over, but they actually draw moisture away from the body. During the winter months, you should both look to shorten your showers and lower the temperature to avoid stripping your skin. Next, pass on the bar soap and grab that bottle of shower gel instead. For the body, perfume free and oil based are better for this time of year. And for the face, find a gentle, oil-based

reduces stress levels, gives you a higher level of alertness, increases your metabolic rate and, as a result, your immune system. For yoga, the 20 Minute Home Yoga Workout with Adrienne (youtube.com) is a comprehensive guided video for beginning practitioners. No equipment is needed: just an open hear t and an open mind. For more activity, a walk through the woods is always an antidote for a healthy mind and body. Recently, I became a vol- unteer at Caleb Smith State Park in Smith- town (581 W. Jericho Turnpike). It is a 543-acre nature preserve which includes: hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing trails. The pond is a wonderful place to meditate by. Bird watchers come here to watch for osprey, warblers, and Virginia Rails. On my walks through the park, I often come across a family of deer foraging for greens. I leave feeling peaceful and energized. For a less solitary experience, invite a few friends over for dinner, or game and movie night. You can also bring in takeout or host a potluck dinner. Last week, we played Scattergories at our friends’ home and had so much fun tweaking our brains for that perfect word or phrase - the laughter was endless. As it is said, laughter is the best medicine!

If this year’s goal is to simply make the best of each day given its challenges, then I believe these techniques and get- togethers will help keep you grounded, focused, healthy and stress-free, confident and complete. As my mother used to say, “Don’t forget to eat your fruits and veg- etables and get a good night’s sleep!” Wishing you all a year filled with good health, peace of mind, and prosperity. One breath at a time.

As I write this piece, I am looking out- side at the first snowfall which blankets the trees and the streets, and reminds me of the oppor tunity to star t the year off on a clean slate. During challenging and ever-changing times, how can we set healthy and realistic goals for ourselves and our families? Here are some ways that I believe can keep us on a healthy path moving forward this new year. To destress, practice deep breathing and yoga. For beginners, the Wim Hof Method of Guided Breathing (youtube.com) is an excellent video that guides you through three rounds of slow-paced breath- ing. If you adhere to this daily practice, you will feel more centered and able to deal with the day’s challenges. He also has a YouTube video touting the benefits of taking daily cold showers. This practice

There are but a few business owners on Long Island, that own three successful restau- rants, each with their own unique charac- teristics and style. In 1996, brothers Joe, Frank and John Mannino began their journey with the opening of their first restaurant on Com- mack Road. Since then, their vision has grown to three locations, that include Smithtown and Oakdale. Five years ago, they took a leap of faith and decided to re- locate the Commack restaurant to a new property, built from the ground up, on Jeri- choTurnpike. By most standards, it has be- come their flagship restaurant and is clearly distinct from any other establishment for miles around. I’ve known the Mannino’s since their in- ception, and have grown to appreciate what it takes to build a family brand syn- onymous with distinctive quality and ex- ceptional service.

Though I’ve been to their restaurants many times, I asked Joe Mannino if he would show me his culinary chops with a four course tasting menu. Included were a variety of dishes, paired with some amazing wines. Guided by their General Manager and Sommelier Giuseppe Sasso, made this 3 hour dining experience, one that I will remember for a long time to come. We began our dinner with three appetizers; Grilled Polpo ; octopus has a tendency of being a little rubbery or tough, but this starter appeared to have been braised, then Charcoal grilled, tossed with endive, roasted pep- pers, lemon and extra virgin olive oil. A colorful medley, that was light and delicious. Old World Meatballs w/ Fresh Ricotta ; a traditional southern Italian clas- sic. Tender, juicy, and flavorful in a simple tomato sauce, paired with creamy fresh ricotta, played well with the acidity of the tomato sauce. Culatello di Zibello ; one of the rarest prosciuttos from Italy, aged 36 months was a real treat. Plated with Mozzarella di Bufala was incred- ible. Its creamy, texture, complimented the savory cured meat very well, making it a winning combination. Our next course; Homemade Wagyu Beef, Porchini Mushroom Ravioli ; 2 ravioli immersed in a light cream sauce with a touch of tomato.Three words; silky, creamy, savory. Perfezione!

Main courses included; Pollo Alla Scarpariello ; every Italian eatery has this classic, but the Mannino’s put a little twist on the typical. A Half chicken was presented, uncut with sliced fingerling potatoes and sweet sausage, accentuated with garlic, rosemary in a light lemon and wine sauce. Higher notes of lemon, seem to cut through any signs of saltiness, elevating overall flavor.White meat can be dry, but this was ten- der and juicy. Cowboy Style Ribeye ; the star of the show was set in a hickory rub for a full day. A bountiful 24 oz cut was plated sliced. A charred encrusted herbs exterior, yet marbleized and juicy within, made this dish “Steak Italiano” style.The herb marinade made the steak stand apart from the traditional broil. Rib-eye is my favorite cut that packs an intense flavor profile. Mannino’s steakhouse quality meat, will not disap- point. A must on your next visit. After the preceding, one dessert was all we could handle: Red Vel- vet Layer Cake ; a generous slice, layered with vanilla cream, drizzled with an irresistible chocolate and raspberry sauce, then crowned with fresh raspberries.With a classic cappuccino, forget about it! After our meal, I sat with Joe Mannino for a few minutes and simply asked, what has been the secret to the success of the Mannino brand? In Joe’s own words;“It’s no secret at all. My brothers and I work on mak- ing our business better every single day.We are hands on operators and still, after 24 years, go into the kitchen, roll up our sleeves and cook.That aside, we keep our employees engaged and stress the importance of how to best present our hospitality to our loyal clientele.” “The goal has been and will always be, to make certain that every sin- gle plate that is placed in front of our customers exceeds expectations.” Our focus this evening was on the food. Yield: 6- 8 large pancakes HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose fl our 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup cocoa powder 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 ⁄ 2 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk 2 eggs 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

HERE IS HOWYOU DO IT: In a bowl, mix together all the dry ingredients. Whisk in milk, adding in eggs, oil, and vanilla. Spray a griddle or frying pan with cooking spray, then set on medium/low heat. When heated, pour in about 1/3 cup pancake mix. Cook until pancakes bubble slightly, then fl ip with a spatula. Cook for an additional 2 minutes or until done. Remove from pan and set on a plate; repeat until all batter is used.

I consider myself a romantic. My favorite fi lm is Casablanca, and you’ll often fi nd me cooking dinner to La Vie En Rose, or just about any French jazz-inspired playlist. I love Valentine’s Day. By Marc Piperno Business owners are fi nally coming to terms with the reality that social media is not the “end all, be all” answer to building a brand in local markets. Contemplating consumer reach and acquisition begins with; who is the targeted customer and demographic, what kinds of media does the ideal customer like and how can businesses best position their branded message. What I have learned over my 3 decades of working with small business is that maximizing sales opportunities matters. Google ads, social media, television, print, and others are there for the choosing. Interestingly enough, while traditional print media is sometimes overlooked, the fact remains, that it continues to elevate brand recognition and can be far more engaging by comparison to its digital counterparts. Since social media gets most of the attention from small business, we will focus this article on the impacts of it, as compared to traditional print. Living in a world of diversity, age and gender with a myriad of interests and habits, means that businesses must consider casting a wide net across 2-3 marketing channels. Studies show that a large percentage of digital usage occurs through mobile devices. Outbound/Inbound calling, texting, emails, ping and push noti fi cations all add to the challenge of keeping consumers focused on ad messaging. I’m sure you have heard the phrase,

“my phone has been blowing up all day and I just can’t take it anymore!” For me, it has become a daily occurrence. We are so interconnected with our mobile devices that at times, it can be stressful. As a result, social media advertisers are challenged to keep the attention of its audiences beyond the documented 1.7 seconds. As index fi ngers swiftly scroll from one feed to the next, its no argument that attention spans are limited. Consuming feeds through social media is like trying to read advertising billboards on a train, as it screams by you at 100 miles per hour. No doubt, most local businesses want to reach local consumers. To capture the attention of consumers within the core 3-5 square mile radius of businesses, social media does not seem to measure up. Examining social media connections, reveals that friends live near and far. While advertisers are sending out posts through their feed to consumers that may live up to 20-25 mile away, the reality is, they will never become core customers. In addition, people posting about a business to their friends are reaching a network that more than likely live further (outside the 3-5 mile radius) from the establishment. Posts sent out to an audience that is fragmented across several towns, counties, even states is not an effective way to reach local consumers. This explains why social media only penetrates a fraction of the local market (generally 2-3% at best).

Yes, people are on their phones all of the time. The big question is…what are they doing with them? Certainly, social media does have some impact locally, but the fact remains that its reach is fragmented. Agreed, businesses should use social media, but if they want to reach more consumers, other options must be thrown on the table. Direct mail printed magazines provide local market saturation. A magazine that provides value driven content has a much better chance of connecting with audiences. People that read an attractive magazine are in a different state of mind; less fragmented and more singular. As a result, consumers spend a greater duration of time looking at advertisements, more than doubling those of social media. In the end, the big bene fi t to the business owner is that they can saturate local markets with traditional print media to engage its audience in the advertisers core market. As business owners challenge themselves to reach consumers that remain entwined in a multitude of digital outlets, it is certainly not the only solution. Direct mail magazines provide brand awareness, drives consumers to websites and ampli fi es local businesses across all media outlets. Printed magazines have endured its 500 year modern history and will continue to in fl uence as it remains a vital part of the marketing mix.

• Dental diseases are always progressive, and can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease, and ultimately tooth loss • Adequate oral and dental care for our pets is solely dependent upon us • Infrequently brushing teeth, for example, only during grooming appointments, can create a false impression of pet oral care • Dental fractures are common due to chewing on raw hide

Dry food is generally better for dental hygiene than wet food. While cleaning teeth with simple gauze is easiest, using a toothbrush is the most effective method. It’s important to start pet dental hygiene practices such as, brushing their teeth at a young age to get them accustomed and comfortable with the

practice. Once a day, every other day, twice a week (or, once a week) - whatever you can do, do it. February is Pet Dental Health Month. Many animal hospitals offer free consultation for dental exams, or may offer a discounted visit. Remember, our pet’s dental care is solely up to us.

Happy February! If the cold and snow doesn’t have you dreaming about spring and getting back in the garden, perhaps these reader-submitted questions will! Reader question: We have an issue with bunnies eating many of our flowers. Any suggestions? Krista’s answer: Bunnies are adorable, however they can be destructive. Your best bet is to have a physical barrier. The youngest of bunnies will not be able to hop up onto raised beds, and bigger bonus if you also have fencing at the top. If you don’t have or can’t do raised beds, choose fencing with holes small enough so curious youngsters won’t become stuck. Ensure there are no gaps between the bottom of the fencing and the ground; I recommend using garden staples. Animals, especially fluffy ones like bunnies, can squeeze through spaces that appear much smaller than their body. I realize that it may be impractical or visually unappealing to enclose flower beds and borders with fences. You may find that garden sprays and oils with scents such as: cinnamon, peppermint, and garlic are effective deterrents. You can sprinkle cinnamon and garlic right from your spice cabinet, but you'll have to reapply every time it rains or the sprinklers come on. I'm generally against harsher spices, such as red pepper flakes, as that just seems mean. One final suggestion: tap evolution. A rabbit can't tell the difference between a pug and a wolf. When I was having a really hard time with rabbits finding ways into my veggie garden, I asked dog owners to collect hair from their pet’s grooming brush, and I stuck clumps all around the edge. I also had a pup

over to play near the garden. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it worked. The rabbits still came in the yard, but they avoided the garden surrounded by dog scent. If there's a dog in your life, maybe you can give that a try. Reader question: I’d like to do more organic gardening. Where can I get free manure? Krista’s answer: Sadly, with the decline of the local family farm, it’s harder to come by places looking to offload manure. If there aren’t farms in your area, your local Cooperative Extension might be able to make some recommendations - they're usually terrific for all things yard and garden. Many local townships, especially those with leaf collection programs, offer free compost days, (often paired with free mulch, if you’re looking for that too). Do any of your neighbors have a backyard chicken coop? It wouldn’t hurt to ask them! A word to the wise: If you end up with manure produced by a grazing animal, ask the farmer what herbicides may have been used on the pasture/hay and do some additional research. There are a few that, even after passing through the animal's digestive tract, could end up having a negative impact on whatever you're trying to grow.

Reader question: What does it mean to “harden off” a plant?

Krista’s answer: Hardening off plants means to slowly introduce (or re-introduce) them to the harsher outside weather after they've spent cozy time in your home or a nursery greenhouse. This helps protect against shock, which can result in dead or damaged leaves, stunted growth, poor flower or fruit production, or even plant death. Start by placing plants outside, (up against the house or other structure) where they are protected from the wind and in indirect sunlight. Do this for an hour or two during the warmest part of the day, once the outside temperature is in the mid-40s to 50s. Each day, increase the amount of time the plant spends outside, always remembering to bring it back inside for overnight. So long as any threat of frost is past, the plant should do just fine moving outside for the season after a week or so of hardening off. Give younger plants and seedlings a bit more time to adjust.
