WELCOME TO EXPLO!

Dear EXPLO Students and Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to EXPLO! To help ensure a successful summer for all, we are enclosing information to help ou prepare for the summer. This book explains and clarifies the philosophies, xperiences, and best practi es that guide us in creating a ommunity that lifts us owards our goals of learning and sharing. All communities h ve rules and policies that keep its members safe and allow them to pursue those things that make them happy and thrive — so it is here at EXPLO. While members of the EXPLO community come from many backgrounds, we have found that the vast majority of parents, guardians, and students agree on many basic principles. For example, we agree that our students should not steal, or lie, or destroy others’ property, or use illegal and harmful substances. We agree that we should not show disrespect for others based on their race, religion, sexual orientation, p ysical abilities, ender or gender identit . Other rules speak to the need to respect privacy and remind us that our public behavior should not make others uncomfortable. As we say elsewhere in our literature, EXPLO not only forms a relationship with our students, but also with the parents/guardians of our students. Since the enclosed rules and policies are the standards to which we will hold students, parents, and ourselves, it is important that students and parents/ guardians read this Student Handbook carefully — perhaps together — and resolve any questions b fore the Program begins. Please call us if we can help clarify any rule or policy. We look forward to having not only an exciting Program filled with fun and learning, but also a safe Program, where we respect the differences that make us individuals and find the common ground that makes us a community. INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS 1.1 PAYMENT OF BILLS All bills must be paid in full by May 1, 2020 (or immediately, for those enrolling after May 1 ) to hold a space for a student. We expect the Program to be filled and that some students will be placed on waiting lists. f payments are not complete, spaces may be opened to students on the waitlist. Please contact the EXPLO Boston Registrar at 781.762.7400 with specific questions. Students who have outstanding balances will not be allowed to remain at the Program. 1.2 DIET Students with special dietary requirements should call our Norwood o e at 781.762.7400 before the start of the Program to make appropriate arrangements. 1.3 RELEASE OF INFORMATION In order to help enrolled families make connections with ther enrolled families in their area, we will release names and phone numbers of enrolled students to other enrolled students by request. If you do not want your information revealed to other enrolled families, you must notify the egistrar by May 1 or immediately upon receipt of this guide.

1.4 THE HEALTH CENTER The Health Center is located on campus and is a short walk from all classroom and activity paces. There is a nurse on duty at the Program throughout the day. 1.5 MEDICATION By Massachuse s state law, all medications th t students bring to the Program must be held and dispensed by our nurses at the Health Center. These include those prescription and over-the-counter medications a student takes during the day. Please contact (or visit ) the Health Center to arrange for the most convenient way to comply with this requirement. Possible arrangements include: Having your child drop off their medication each morning and then pick it up just before they leave campus for the day. Having the Health Center hold a specific amount of medication (e.g. a week’s worth, multiple sessions’ worth) and dispensing it to the student in the Health Center at the prescribed time. International students attending EXPLO Mini as Day students must bring all medications to the Health Center. All medication orders and directions must be written in English. Please note that a Medication Confirmation Form must be completed by a licensed physician for each medication administered at the Program. 1.6 INHALERS AND EPI-PENS Any student who is in need of an inhaler ( s ) will be asked to keep the inhaler ( s ) in the Health Center. If this presents a problem based on your child’s medical situation, please contact David Torcoletti at 781.762.7400 prior to the start of the Program. Any student who is in need of an Epi-Pen will keep their Epi-Pen with them throughout the day. Our Health Center keeps a stock of Epi-Pens that can be used as backup should the need arise. 1.7 IMMUNIZATIONS AND MEDICAL RECORDS Each student’s Medical History Form, with complete information and up- to-date immunizations, must be received prior to the start of the Program. For safety reasons, students whose completed medical forms have not been received by the Program will not be allowed to remain at the Program.

1.8 TRANSPORTATION BY BUS Students signed up for the bus service will receive access to their bus schedule on their Student Portal. Buses arrive on campus at approximately 9:00 a.m. and leave Monday through Friday at 4:00 p.m. Without If parents/guardians unescorted, parents/guardians must sign the appropriate section of the EXPLO Boston Bus Form. If a student should miss their bus and arrive after 9:00 a.m., the student should be checked in at the Main Office in BalfourHood.

1.9 TRANSPORTATION BY CAR Early Students who arrive at this time can have breakfast at the Program (for a small fee) and will participate in ac iti s until the Program begins.

(The lists include the names, addresses, and phone numbers of enrolled Mini students.) If a family does not want to be listed, they should contact the Program Registrar by May 1, 2020; otherwise the information will be ncluded. Inclement Weather: In the event of inclement weather during car pick-up or drop-off, families may be asked to wait until the storm has pass d or redirected to an alternate on-campus location. This ensures the safet of students, staff and families partici atin in the process.

Students found to be using wifi, cellular or internet services in an unauthorized fashion will face disciplinary measures, and the item will be confiscated. EXPLO is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

INFORMATION FOR MINI STUDENTS

2.1 ATTENDANCE + CHECK-INS EXPLO Mini students must check in daily with their Advisors as soon as they arrive. Parents/guardians should call the Main Office by 9:00 a.m. if a student will be absent or arriving late. A er the initial morning chec -in, check-ins occur every couple of hours throughout the day. Whether at meals, courses, or assemblies, students should always check in promptly with their group leaders. 2.2 TELEPHONE CALLS Parents/guardians can leave messages for their children, but students will not be called to the phone. Mini students may only make calls from the Main O e. Students may not use cell phones on campus. Students who carry a cell phone during their travel to or from the Program are required to keep the cell phone turned o and stored in their locker during the day. 2.3 FOOTWEAR Shoes must be worn at all times. Closed- oe shoes (sneakers) are required for sport activ ties. tudents may not wear ip- ops, though sandals with support at the toe AND the heel are allowed. White/light-soled shoes are strongly encouraged and greatly appreciated for doing activ ties in the gymnasium. 2.4 EXPLO IDS EXPLO IDs (issued at registratio ) must be worn at all times xcept while swimming, playing sports, sleeping, and showering. Lost IDs will be replaced for a fee of $5 that will be charged to the parent/guardian.

2.5 THE DINING HALL + MEALS Students must wear shoes in the dining hall as required by state law. Vegetarian options are available at each meal. Students with special dietary requirements should call our Norwood office at 781.762.7400 before the beginning of the Program to make appropriate arrangements. Lunches are provided Monday through Friday. We will also provide a mid- afternoon snack. tudents arriving early or staying late may opt to join us for breakfast or dinner. Students having breakfast or dinner will be charged a fee ($7 for breakfast and $15 for dinner), payable by cash or credit card at pick-up or drop-off. 2.6 CLASSROOM SPACE Students are expected to move quietly in and near classroom buildings. Running, shouting, and playing music are not permitted in classroom buildings. 2.7 DAMAGE TO SCHOOL FACILITIES Students are expected to treat Wheaton and EXPLO facilities and equipment with respect. If facilities or quipment are damaged beyond regular wear and tear, students may be charged for such damage. 2.8 LOST AND FOUND EXPLO begins packing up to leave Wheaton the last day of the Program (Friday, August 7, 2020). On Sunday morning, August 9, 2020, we begin moving our equipment out of the school and finish the move by Tuesday, August 11, 2020. We do have a lost and found at the Program, and we do make every attempt to return lost items to students. If your child has lost something, please call us as soon as possible to maximize the possibility of returning the item. We cannot store lost items for an indefinite period. The likelihood that we will be able to locate and return items after the end of August is very small. We encourage students to label all belongings, which greatly increases the chances of return. EXPLO is not responsible for lost items.

STUDENT RULES + STANDARDS

All members of the EXPLO community are expected to follow the Program’s rules and procedures and treat others with honesty and respect. For the safety of all community members and the harmony of the Program, students and parents/guardians should understand and commit to the following rules + standards. The Program makes every e ort to address student life issues in a proacti e manner; we deal with disciplinary issues fairly, consistently, and as quickly as possible. The sta and administration handle each case individuall , keeping in mind the circumstances of the violation as well as the best interests of the larger community. Although consistency is desirable, it will not always be the governing principle in settling disciplinar issues. Disciplinary action will be taken when there is a preponderance of evidence that a rule or guideline of the Program has been violated. Our Program strives to keep parents/guardians informed of their child’s disciplinary process. 3.1 NOTE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS EXPLO not only forms a relationship with the students who a end the Program, but also with their parents/guardians. Our experience has shown that our students are best served when parents/guardians and the Program have a positi e and open working relationship For the Program to be most e ecti e for our students, parents/guardians must be able to support our policies and procedures. EXPLO reserves the right to dismiss a currently enrolled student if the student’s parents/guardians are not cooperati e and/or compliant with EXPLO policies and procedures. In addition, EXPLO reserves the right in subsequent summers to deny enrollment for similar reasons. EXPLO also reserves the right to dismiss a student if parents/ guardians have misled the Program about their child’s history, including, but not limited to, behavior, physical and emotional health, and or school experience.

3.2 MAJOR RULES A student who violates a Major Rule can expect to be dismissed. Please note that if a student is knowingly and willingly in the presence of a Major Rule violation, it is as i they are breaking the rule themselves. When a student is dismissed, parents/guardians must make arrangements for the student to be taken home immediately and at the parents’ expense. There is no refund when a student is dismissed whether they are staying for one or multiple sessions In addition o the examples cited below, behaviors, whether on or o campus, that are deemed by the Program to jeopardize the welfare of the community or bring the name of the Program into disrepute are considered Major Rule violations 1. Students are expected to conduct themselves with honesty and integrity. Therefore, lying, cheating, and de eitful beh vior (falsific tion f permissions, absences without appropriate permissions, forgery, telephone fraud, computer violations, e c.) are violations f the Program’s standards. 2. Students are expected to act with respect for the well-being and rights of others. Behavior that is deemed to be injurious to the Program, individual students, or the larger campus community is unacceptable. Therefore, impinging on the rights of others through harassment and/or hazing is a breach of such standards. Such behaviors include, but are not limited to: sexual assault or harassment; physical or verbal assault or threats (including those based on gender, race, religion, ethnicity, national origin sexual orientation, o gender identit ); behaviors intended to intimid te or humiliate others, or those that may cause emotional dist ess or physical harm; cyberbullying; and/or other harassing, intimid ting, o threatening behavior or language. 3. Students are expected to respect both community property and the property of others. Theft, the possession o use of stolen property, or the deliberate destruction o abuse of personal or community property, are violations f this standard. 4. For reasons of safety, a student may not give away or sell their EXPLO ID, lanyard, keys, key card, prox card or anything else that would identif a person as an EXPLO student or grant access to campus rooms or facilities

5 Students are expected to maintain a safe environment. Examples of violations f this standard are: possessing or using fi eworks, fi earms, or other dangerous weapons, items, or substances (including pocket knives); using the fi e extinguishe s or setting fi e alarms (except in an actual emergency); and engaging in other behaviors the Program deems dangerous. Because a possible fi e exposes so many EXPLO community members to extreme danger, the burning of anything or the use of an open flame indoo s (candles, matches, lighters, incense, tobacco products, etc.) is a violation f this standard. 6 Students are expected to abide by the rules of the Program as well as the public laws governing the use of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs. Therefore, it is not acceptable to: possess, use, distribute, provide, or cause to be brought on campus any illegal drug, controlled substance, tobacco product, anabolic steroid, alcohol, or any related paraphernalia (including tobacco, marijuana or hashish pipes or papers, e-cigare es, and alcohol containers); misuse prescription o over-the-counter medications or chemical substances; or return to the Program showing evidence of having been smoking, drinking or using illegal drugs. Students who knowingly remain in the presence of a tobacco, drug, or alcohol violation are themselves in violation f this policy. 7 Students are expected to be positi e and cooperati e in all of their dealings with the Program. If a student repeatedly breaks Program rules, does not abide by the written o verbal directi es of the Program, or does not follow Program procedures, they can expect to be dismissed for the accumulation f such incidents. 3.3 OTHER RULE INFRACTIONS Failure to abide by other Program rules makes a student liable to be placed on probation. robationar violations include Unexcused absences from any required events (for example, check-ins, courses, trips, etc.). Inappropriate physical contact (touching, public displays of a ection, tripping, pushing, etc.). Bringing in, or being with, an unauthorized person, on or o campus at any time Inappropriate use of technology such as downloading or receiving suggesti e or explicit content or illegally procured “bootleg” content on computers, tablets, or mobile phones. • • • •

The misuse of, or damage to, personal or community property.

Being in unauthorized areas such as fi e escapes (except in emergencies), balconies, roofs, and ledges. Hitchhiking or use of transportation ther than that provided with permission of the student’s family and EXPLO. Failing to follow Program rules, refusing to comply with reasonable sta requests, and/or showing an uncooperati e and harmful attitud If the Program deems any of these infractions to be eg egious, or if there are multiple i fractions f these rules, dismissal can result. 3.4 EXPLO COMMUNITY EXPECTATIONS While students are expected to be familiar with and follow the Rules and Standards listed here, we also invite students to particip te in creating a culture of community in their classes and Advisor Groups when they arrive at the Program. A strong community is formed when its members share clear expectations f how its values will be embodied throughout the experience. Once on campus, we ask students to consider the following Community Expectations Be Kind. Respect people, property, places, and yourself. Be Safe. Maintain a safe environment for yourself and others. Be True. Conduct yourself with honesty and integrity. Be Curious. Explore the world of people and ideas. Instructors and Advisors will guide students through a developmentally- appropriate discussion about the EXPLO Community Expectations and h w students can take ownership for their own contributions and hold each ther accountable as members of the community.

3.5 DISCIPLINARY STATUS + FUTURE ENROLLMENT If a student has been placed on probation th y should expect that this status can a ect whether they will be allowed to return to any of the Programs in subsequent summers and will necessitate a conversation with the Head of the Program to discuss whether returning is appropriate. If a student is dismissed from the Program, they will not be allowed to enroll in subsequent summers. 3.6 STATE + FEDERAL REGULATIONS While the guidelines described reflect EXP O’s own philosophy and mechanisms for dealing with breaches of our Rules + Standards, we are also obligated to adhere to all applicable state and federal statutes. Thus, should we become aware of certain types of incidents — such as abuse (current or in the past), illegal sexual behavior, hazing, and some forms of harassment — we are required to report them to outside authorities, including the local police and the Massachusetts epartment of Children and Family Services. 3.7 EXPLO’S POLICY ON LANGUAGE USE EXPLO recognizes the power of language to impact the tone, quality of interpersonal interaction, and eelings of safety in our community. As a result, the use of profanity, obscene language, or disparaging language and remarks that demean, attack, o threaten someone is prohibited at EXPLO. This includes remarks based on race, gender, gender identit , sexual orientation, eligious practi e or belief, and physical or mental ability. Violations f this policy will be addressed, with emphasis placed on educating students about the detrimental e ects of such usage on our community and the hurtful onsequences for the receiver. As noted above, disciplinary response may also be a consequence of such violations

3.8 LEAVING THE PROGRAMWITHOUT PERMISSION Parents/guardians should understand that if a student leaves the Program without using the established sign-out procedures, essentiall “running away,” that student will no longer be able to particip te in the Program. EXPLO cannot guarantee the safety of a student who is not compliant with our whereabouts rules, and will not take responsibility for a student once they have left the rogram in an unauthorized fashion. 3.9 SELF-DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIORS Eating diso ders, cutting, burning, suicidal estures, and other similar behaviors are profound and potentiall life threatening. These types of behaviors require the treatment and a ention f specialists. EXPLO is not able to provide such specialized treatment for these behaviors. Therefore, if a student engages in any of these types of behaviors during the Program, they must go home to ensure their safety and the well-being of others. If a student has exhibited these types of behaviors before the start of the Program, EXPLO will need to consult with the student’s treating p ysician or mental health professional regarding the student’s ability to particip te in the Program without harm to themselves or others. This consultation will be considered as a recommendation onl , as EXPLO reserves the right to decide whether Program a endance is in the best interests of the student and/or the Program. EXPLO may also insist on a contract that will specify behavior and permit EXPLO to monitor the student’s compliance.

3.10 STATEMENT ABOUT THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY Student use of telephones and computers is subject to all Rules + Standards governing student behavior. Behavior that is in any way disrespectful, har ful, or deemed inappropriate will not be tolerated. Parents/guardians should be advised that the Program cannot assume responsibility for monitoring all student activity on the I ternet, and that some sites may contain material that is pornographic, discriminatory, violent, or otherwise objectionable Any student found to be accessing, downloading, or distributing such ma erial will be violating the ules + Standards for student behavior at the Program and will be subject to disciplinary action. tudents should be careful not to give out personal information ver the Internet, such as dorm location or phone number, to people whom they do not know. The use and possession of cell phones, video players, video games, and laptop computers is not allowed because of their tendency to inhibit engagement with the community. Students found to be in possession of one of these items will be issued a Dean’s Warning, while the item in question will be confiscated. 3.11 STUDENT DRESS CODE While dress is generally informal, the Program has community standards to ensure that appropriate student dress provides a comfortable environment for all. These expectations will be made xplicit to students at the Program, and we reserve the right to address breaches of our dress code. Dress code guidelines include, but are not limited to the following: No clothing that is too revealing (for example, tops that allow exposure of the belly button or loose clothing that allows exposure of undergarments). No clothing with offensive wording, logos, designs, etc., including those containing alcohol and drug references. EXPLO Boston does not allow flip-flops as regular footwear. Sandals must secure the toes and the heel for daily classes and activities. Flip-flop sandals may be used for showering or pool activities.

3.12 BUS RULES Since many EXPLO Boston students will be riding buses, it is important that all students be familiar with EXPLO’s bus rules: 1. Students must follow the bus driver’s instructions and sh w courtesy to the driver and other students and sta . 2. Students must keep arms, feet, head, and shoulders inside the bus and may not throw objects out of the bus windows. Students may not yell, scream, or play loud music inside the bus, nor out the windows of the bus. 3. At times, a aculty member or bus driver may have to assign seats and students are expected to cooperate regarding these assignments. Once a student is in their seat, they must stay in it until the bus omes to its destin tion. tudents may not walk around while the bus is moving. 4. Students must help keep the bus clean. This includes removing one’s own trash and anything else left behind y other students. 5. All other EXPLO rules are in e ect while students are riding EXPLO buses. 3.13 INCLEMENT WEATHER In the case of inclement weather, for the safety of all members of the community, it is expected for students to follow all directions issued y EXPLO faculty. In the event of severe weather, students will be required to remain indoors (this includes academic facilities, dining halls, and dormi ories) until they receive further notifi tion f om EXPLO faculty.

FROM THE WEST Take the Massachusetts urnpike (Interstate 90) to Exit 11A onto Route 495 south. Follow 495 to Exit 11, turn onto 140 south. Follow Route 140 south 2.5 miles.
