Be Kind. This is EXPLO’s general guideline for how we treat each other. With kindness. Acceptance. A willingness to listen and be helpful. We suspend harsh judgment, and we look towards communication and understanding. We don’t mock, bully, demean or diminish those with whom we are learning. We wait our turn, share gracefully and make sure that others feel welcome to our group, regardless of who they are. If we witness a lack of kindness, we intervene immediately, or ask a teacher to intervene, to set things right again. Be Safe. Safety in our online environment means being thoughtful about how much, and the way, you share. It means that you consider the connections you make while in attendance at EXPLO Online, and the personal information you choose to share with them. It means that, when working at home on an EXPLO project that requires assembly, cutting, gluing, cooking, building, or any hands-on work, that you approach that work with safety at the front of your mind. Ask for help from your teacher if you don’t know how to safely work with materials, tools or procedures. Or perhaps ask for help from parents or guardians who are home with you. Keeping your mind, body and spirit safe this summer is of great importance to all of us. Be True. Being true can be about honesty - not lying, or cheating or spreading rumors or other harmful acts. It can also mean that you are true to your values - you see yourself as a fair person committed to justice, and a honorable person whose word is his/her/their bond. The concept of “Integrity” means you are of “One Piece” - you can’t, for example, be honest with your friends and be dishonest with adults and have integrity. We expect you to practice integrity this summer and to be true to your best self. Be Curious. You will be learning and sharing with teachers and students from around the country, and from many walks of life. Being curious about how others think, and why, is a wonderful use of curiosity. Being curious about the concepts you are working with, or the materials with which you are expressing an idea, is great. A good class inspires more questions than it answers, and, we hope, generates even more questions from our teachers and students alike. While the way we express curiosity about people has some limits, our curiosity about how the world works in science, art, literature etc. can and should be boundless.

EXPLO’s Response. These are guidelines for how we expect EXPLO Online participants to treat each other this summer. If any of our students’ actions fall short of these guidelines, we will address it in the moment. Depending on the nature of the offense, it may be warranted to bring it to the attention of the Head of Program, who may follow-up with the offending student and parents.

Our responses can range from a conversation where we ask the student to be more thoughtful, to suspending the student from participation for a day or so, to removing the student from EXPLO Online.

If you have any questions, please speak to the Head of Programs. We want this experience to be inspiring for us all, and these guidelines are offered so that there is a welcoming place for all of our students at EXPLO Online.
