operations and purchased electricity by 30 percent. The switch to 100 percent renewable electricity for the Mills River facility is a major step toward meeting that target. The use of renewable electricity is a key compo- nent of UPM Raflatac’s Biofore Site program, which aims to improve the sustainability performance of the company’s manufacturing sites. The program in- cludes a Biofore Site scorecard with approximate- ly 30 sustainability measures, including energy use, aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Devel- opment Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are the framework that governments, business and civil society use to drive the sustainability agenda. The Biofore Site score- card is also a tool to make the company’s sustainabil- ity performance more tangible and transparent for its employees and others. McDonald’s Canada To Test Sustainable Packaging McDonald’s Canada is putting sustainable packag- ing options and recycling initiatives to the test at two “Green Concept Restaurants.” These quick service restaurants will serve as incubators for new cups, lids, cutlery, stir sticks, and straws made from renewable, recycled, or certified sources. Testing is scheduled to begin over the next few months at one McDonald’s Canada restaurant locat- ed in London, Ontario, and one in Vancouver, British Columbia. UPM Raflatac Powered By 100% Renewable Energy UPM Raflatac’s factory in Mills River, North Carolina, is reportedly the first manufacturing facility in North Carolina whose electrical supply is generated entirely by renewable sources through Charlotte-based Duke Energy’s NC Renewable Energy Program. This year, the Mills River factory opted to increase its renewable electricity use from 4 percent to 100 per- cent. Renewable electricity is generated from sources like wind, solar and hydropower. ICPF Donates To Expand UT-A Corrugated Program

Six years ago, the International Corrugated Packag- ing Foundation installed a DT 3000 CAD sample table (donated to ICPF by Vanguard Packaging) and Artios software (donated by Esko) to initiate a partnership and packaging design program for the University of Texas Arlington graphic design students within the university’s Art &Art History Department. That same year, Jana Harris (Harris Packaging) whose firm is an ICPF corporate partner, was recruited by ICPF to serve as ICPF’s representative to University of TexasArlington’s (UT-A) new corrugated packaging ad- visory board. Like the ICPF representatives who have been appointed to the advisory boards established at its other 25 partner universities, Harris has donated extensive time to provide input on UT-A’s corrugated packaging program, to mentor corrugated packaging faculty and students, to hire student interns and new graduates, and to promote the hiring of student interns by other ICPF corporate partners with operations in the region. Most recently, Harris Packaging donated an addition- al 2002 Kongsberg CAD table to the UT-A program.

Getting the correct color has always been one of flexo's biggest challenges. Anilox selection plate type, substrate, and other conditions all play a part in hitting LAB targets, but starting with the proper press-ready ink is critical for repeatability. In response to this need, Pamarco has released for sale its automatic precision proofer: Iris. Utilizing the company's well-known hand proofers and hand proofers with doctor blades in an automatic system, Iris removes operator inconsistencies. Speed, impression, and a selection of anilox rolls built to converter specifications combine to produce

This past year, UT-A also applied to ICPF’s university packaging award program to enhance its corrugated program. UT-A will be provided up to $124,350 in do- nations of equipment and funding over three years to expand its corrugated packaging curriculum to eight separate courses, to create a new a minor in corrugat- ed packaging design, to hire two adjunct professors from the industry, and to pace a large scale flatbed printer, as well as 20 computers, desks and chairs to upgrade UT-A’s packaging design lab. Mondi Aims To Produce Sustainable Packaging

Mondi Group has played a significant role in Proj- ect Proof, a Pioneer Project facilitated by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF).The project has created a proof-of-concept prototype flexible plastic pouch incorporating a minimum of 20 percent post-consum- er plastic waste originating from mixed household waste. The pouch is suitable for packaging household products such as detergent. Project Proof is part of Mondi’s commitment to the Ellen MacArthur New Plastics Economy Initiative. It is focused on designing products in line with circular economy principles and has shown that it is possible to use unclean and raw post-consumer recycled content to create new flexible packaging. Mondi will now develop the prototype fur- ther to ensure it can be rolled out as a commercially viable product for its multinational FMCG customers. This will support Mondi’s work as a signatory of the New Plastics Economy Commitment to ensure a min- imum of 25 percent of post-consumer waste is incor- porated across all its flexible plastic packaging where food contact regulations allow by 2025. Paper and Packaging Board To Host State Webinar The Paper and Packaging Board (P+PB) will hold its annual State of the Campaign webinar on Wednesday, July 17, and Thursday, July 18, marking the 4th year of the start of the Paper & Packaging Board – How Life Unfolds national campaign.
