Flexographic Printer Launches In Florida
A new flexo converter, Catapult, has launched in Orlando, Florida. The Catapult team will specialize in three specific areas: self-adhesive, narrow web film and linerless labeling. The company is led by founder and CEO Mark Cook, who recently was a partner in a $37 million in- ternational packaging design agency. Cook previously worked with his label printing em- ployer in the UK, where he learned about the indus- try from the print floor up. From initially packing boxes to mastering a wide range of machinery, he moved into sales. He later was a director and share- holder role at Paragon Print and Packaging. Cook was also reportedly instrumental in the rapid growth of Equator, a packaging design agency that spans the U.S., UK and European markets. Catapult has invested in a host of technologies in- cluding Esko’s XPS Crystal CDI, Hamillroad Soft- ware’s Bellissima Digitally Modulated Screening (DMS) as well as photopolymer plate technology from MacDermid. Two of the latest FA Nilpeter press- es, as well as GTT anilox from Apex, are also housed in the 56,000-square-foot Florida site.

converters, adapting to new technologies and meeting the challenges of a changing competitive landscape. “The flexographic process has often been reliant on skilled operator engagement to deliver quality re- sults,” the report stated.“New advances, however, see the emergence of collaboration between OEMs at every stage of the flexographic process.” Automation has led to improvements in process, makeready, plate preparation, workflow and a num- ber of other areas. For any flexo converter to remain competitive, and for the industry to remain on the cutting edge, printers must look at all areas of their businesses, from the front office to shipping, to take full advantage of the avenues that can be opened through today’s advances in technology. Skill Shortages The increased demand for skilled labor is not unique to the flexo printing industry, but how the in- dustry meets this challenge could very well deter- mine its future course. “Increased automation also helps address the problem of skilled labor — especially in developed regions,” said the report. “The flexographic industry as a whole has been slow to react to this problem as skilled press operators retire from the workforce and it has been dif ficult to attract and retain younger talent.” The report suggests that one of the ways in which the industry is able to combat this challenge is through the advances in technology mentioned earli- er. New flexo presses are so much better designed than those in the past, so much more intuitive and operator-friendly, that operators carry much less of the burden for producing quality product. “OEMs are in fact leading the way for the flexo- graphic industry,” said the report, “by evolving process and print production to automate many of the key flexographic functional requirements. The re- sult has created far more intelligent and automated workflows and production with less emphasis on op- erator interaction and knowledge. While the initiative may reduce the volume of personnel required, it will certainly stem the major problem facing the industry overall.” Digital Acceptance “The continued emergence of digital print into some of flexographic’s traditional core markets is dri- ven by trends in lower volumes and personalization options,” said the report. “As digital technology con-

Corrugated Packaging Market Size To Cross $294.3 Billion The global corrugated packaging market is projected to reach $294.3 billion by 2023, according to the mar- ket research report published by P&S Market Research. The market growth is reportedly driven by the increas- ing demand of cost-effective and environment-friendly packaging materials from various end use industries. On the basis of application, the corrugated packag- ing market is categorized into processed food, per- sonal and household care, beverages, electrical and electronics goods, chemicals, glassware and ceramics, fresh food and produce, paper products, tobacco, and wood and timber products, textiles, direct mail and dispatch, transport, and others. Others include footwear and furniture. The market expected to witness the fastest growth is personal and household care application, witness- ing a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 4.3 percent during the forecast period. The demand for personal and household care has seen immense growth over the past few years owing to high demand for cosmet- ics and personal care products. This, according to the report, is driving the use of corrugated packaging widely in cosmetics, personal care product, and home furnishing packaging. The corrugated packaging market in Asia-Pacific (APAC) is expected to register a CAGR of 5.0 percent during the forecast period. The market growth in the region is mainly driven by the growing demand for packaging materials from the processed food indus- try of countries such as China and India. China is the largest market for corrugated packing in the region. The high industrial production in China is one of the leading factors for the growth of the corrugated packaging market in the country while Japan is the second largest market. The Japanese economy is largely based on export, as the country is one of the leading exporters of consumer electronics and auto- motive parts in APAC. Corrugated packaging is one of the most popular packaging materials for internation- al trade, owing to its suitability and lower cost, as compared to its counterparts, stated the report. Additionally, the boom in the processed food indus- try is expected to contribute to the corrugated pack- aging market growth. The packaging of processed food requires secure and flexible packaging solutions, to en- sure product safety and convenience. The increasing demand for easy-to-use, convenient, and lightweight packaging materials, innovative paperboard packaging solutions are being developed by packaging manufac- turers to tap the growing demand from the processed food industry, thus fueling the market growth.
