LEGO Moves Toward 100% Sustainability reported by Greg Kishbaugh TT he LEGO Group announced that it is aiming for 100 percent sustainable packaging by 2025. Currently, the majority of LEGO packaging, by weight, is cardboard or paper-based, which is recyclable, sustainably sourced and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Registration Open For Labelexpo Registration for the 16th edition of Labelexpo Americas is now open. Set to take place once again at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Cen- ter, Rosemont, Illinois, from Septem- ber 25-27, this event will feature a packed two-day conference sched- ule, an Ecovillage and, for the very first time, an Automation Arena. Part of the Labelexpo Global Se- ries since 1989, the biennial Label- expo Americas is an established platform for print professionals, brand owners, label and packaging designers and associated graphic in- dustry suppliers. Explore Your Future The key focus of the 2018 edition — “Explore Your Future” — will be future technology and environmen- tal issues in the sector. The 2018 show is again supported and by the trade bodies TLMI, ACOBAN, AIM- CAL,AIPIA, FTA and FSEA. Spread across five exhibitions halls, more than 400 exhibitors will be taking part over the three days.

“To support our com- pany mission, we have a Planet Promise and we have pledged to play our part in protecting the planet for future genera- tions,” said Tim Brooks, Vice President Environ- mental Responsibility at the LEGO Group. “Using sustainable packaging is an important part of ful- filling that promise. By bringing forward our am- bition or sustainable packaging, we are also acknowledging the need to find better packaging solutions sooner. We’ve made good progress in the past three years, and there is still work to do.” LEGO br icks are de- signed to be reused and handed down through generations, but not

Geostick Group Acquires New Nilpeter FA Geostick Group, a manufacturer of self-adhesive la- bels, has acquired a new Nilpeter FA to future-proof production and add capabilities in flexible packag- ing, special tags, and self-adhesive labels. Geostick has a long-standing relationship with Nilpeter, and the new FA complements its existing line-up totalling five Nilpeter FA-4 presses at locations in Utihoorn and The Hague, Holland.

Geostick faced challenges of needing to replace old equipment, expand capacity, and increase quality and register accuracy in the production of self-adhesive labels and complex tags in back and front printing. “To solve these challenges we simply had to up- grade technology, shorten setup times, decrease waste, and ease operations for our printers. We have done all this with the new FA,” said Cees Schouten, Operations Director at Geostick Group. “In our Geo- stick Labels & Tags division we also produce labels for Healthcare, where perfect print quality and very accurate registering is a must, which the FA also en- ables. We have a long history with Nilpeter, and cur- rently have four FA-4 presses in Uithoorn, and one at our plant in The Hague.” CCL Industries Inc. has signed a binding agreement to acquire privately-held Nortec International Ltd. Nortec is based in Israel near Tel Aviv. The sale is for approximately $9 million in cash and assumed debt. Nortec’s 2017 sales were $9.6 million with an esti- mated, adjusted EBITDA of approximately $1.4 mil- lion. The business will change its trading name to CCL Design Israel on closing, which is expected dur- ing the second quarter of 2018. • Approximately 75% of cardboard used to make LEGO boxes comes from recycled material. • The average size of a LEGO box has been reduced by 14% over the past four years, improving transport efficiency, saving on average every year more than 3,000 truckloads and 7,000 tonnes of cardboard. •All paper and cardboard used in LEGO products and product packaging is recyclable, sustainably sourced and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

LEGO Sustainability ( Cont’d from Page 1)

everyone keeps their LEGO boxes and other packag- ing. As some of the LEGO packaging contains single- use disposable plastics, which today are not sustainable, and in some cases cannot be recycled by consumers, the LEGO Group is actively taking mea- sures to improve its packaging sustainability. “By 2025, our aim is that no LEGO packaging parts have to end up in a landfill,” said Brooks. “Packaging will be made from renewable or recycled materials and will be easy for consumers to recycle.” The LEGO Group has taken several steps to im- prove the sustainability of its packaging: • In 2018, the company began using recycled plas- tic in packaging ‘blisters’ - the transparent plastic windows which allow consumers to have a sneak peek into some LEGO boxes. • This year, LEGO boxes in the United States and Canada started to feature the How2Recycle label pro- moting packaging recycling and providing US and Canadian consumers with clear guidance to responsi- bly recycle their LEGO packaging. • In 2017, plastic trays used in Advent Calendars were replaced with recyclable paper-pulp trays, saving up to 1 million plastic trays from going to the landfill.

The LEGO Group’s sustainable packaging ambition focuses on finding sustainable packaging alternatives that are:

• Renewable : 100 percent of LEGO boxes, bags, and spe- cial packaging are to be made from recycled or sus- tainably sourced bio-based materials. • Efficient : ongoingly exploring ways to optimize packaging, balancing consumer appeal with environ- mental action. • Recyclable : designing packaging that facilitates consumers to recycle in our major markets.

Running alongside the exhibition and making its debut — not only at Labelexpo Americas 2018 but also for the first time in the Americas — is the Au- tomation Arena, a demonstration of two automated press lines for conventional and digital production, covering job creation right through to pre-press, printing, finishing and invoicing. Another key feature of Labelexpo Americas 2018 will be the TLMI Ecovillage, designed to raise aware- ness of environmental issues in the sector. The associ- ation’s Ecovillage will be a designated space on the show floor that will feature a comprehensive directo- ry of exhibitors who are committed to best sustain- ability practices and environmental stewardship. The TLMI Ecovillage will also feature daily sessions that address the current state of sustainability within the North American label-printing supply chain and the most pressing issues that industry converters face today related to environmental compliance. Matrix waste from exhibitors’ booths will be baled and collected by Green Bay, Wisconsin-based Convergen Energy to be made into fuel pellets after the show’s closure. The pellets are an alternative to coal with a lower carbon and overall emissions’ footprint compared to fossil fuels. There will also be a daily session tackling the big myths surround- ing sustainable packaging and current issues of in- terest to converters. As in previous years, the 2018 edition offers a edu- cational conference program with 12 sessions and three expert-led master classes run in association with the Label Academy. These will cover: 1) shrink sleeve technology, markets and applications; 2) inks, coatings and varnishes, their application in modern narrow web converting operations and legislation; and 3) management information systems (MIS) and workflow automation. Also taking place on the evening of September 25 is the annual Label Industry Global Awards, which recognizes key achievements in the label and pack- age printing sector. The four award categories cover innovation, sustainability and individual pioneering contribution to the industry.
