Economic Recovery To Continue In 2021
AF&PA Releases Paper Report
American Forest & Paper Associa- tion (AF&PA) released the 61st Paper Industry Capacity and Fiber Con- sumption Report. According to the report, U.S. containerboard capacity expanded in 2020, continuing a de- cade-long trend and reaching a re- cord high of 40.4 million tons.Tissue paper capacity has also shown an upward trend, increasing for the past five years. Reaching New Levels The report also shows that U.S. mill consumption of recovered fiber reached the second-highest level in the past decade. The increase was driven by mill consumption of corru- gated, the largest grade of recovered fiber, reaching a high of 22.8 million tons in 2020. However, the report shows that overall U.S. paper and paperboard ca- pacity declined 1.6 percent in 2020, compared with the average decline of 1.1 percent per year since 2011. Boxboard was the only packaging grade to decline last year. However,

Stora Enso Inaugurates Renewed Containerboard Mill Stora Enso arranged a virtual inauguration ceremony to celebrate the conversion of the Oulu, Finland Mill which was transformed from paper production into high-quality kraftliner production. The Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, inaugurated the mill. Oulu is Stora Enso’s second successful conversion, following Varkaus Mill, inaugurated in 2016. The EUR 350 million conversion project proceeded according to plan, from the investment decision made in May 2019 to the start of the commercial deliveries in the first quarter of 2021. The new machine is esti- mated to reach its designed annual production capaci- ty of 450 000 tons by the end of the June 2021. AvantForte, produced at the mill, has three fibre layers, reportedly making it the strongest kraftliner in Stora Enso’s portfolio. Packaging applications in- clude fresh, fatty or moist food, as well as e‑com- merce packaging. SWEDBRAND Opens Factory In Poland SWEDBRAND Group has established a new factory in Gdansk, Poland, for the production of rigid boxes in the hope of offering many advantages to European brands in addressing global supply chain difficulties exacerbated by the pandemic. Manufacturing in Eu- rope for European distribution significantly reduces both time and costs associated with the delivery of finished premium rigid boxes. “We all watched the Suez Canal blockage with dis- may,” said Cornelia Oswald, Head of Sales Worldwide at SWEDBRAND. “Added to the disruption in supply chains caused by the pandemic, this was a manufactur- er’s nightmare. It makes our decision to open a plant in Poland look prescient, though none of us could have anticipated this convergence of unfortunate events.” The new plant in Gdansk is reportedly a highly auto- mated converting operation and is managed by Bog- dan Putko, a packaging professional with 35 years of industry experience. survey responses that formed the report indicate a slight rebound in 2021, according to the report. Newsprint and printing-writing papers decreased in 2020, with capacity for both grades declining in the past decade. The report states that this is because of the continued decline from displacement by electron- ic communication. Some companies are repurposing machines that produced printing/writing papers to produce containerboard and packaging paper to in- crease profits. Survey responses indicate total paper and paper- board capacity will remain flat, decreasing less than one-half of 1 percent in 2021. Within this collaboration the two partners will co-host ‘G7 Expert Live Online Training & Certification’ courses enabling Siegwerk to directly train its customers in Idealliance’s universal calibration methodology for achieving a visual similarity across all print processes. “Visual color consistency across all marketing media of a brand — whether online or print — is key for a suc- cessful brand recognition,” explained Kiran Deshpande, Global Senior Expert Color Management at Siegwerk. The G7 methodology is Idealliance’s global set of specifications for CMYK printing process for ensuring a common visual appearance in all printed elements across multiple devices and facilities. Thereby, G7 is not a color management system, it rather is a universal calibration methodology that can be used to adjust any press or printing system to a common neutral appear- ance, regardless of inks, substrate,or printing technology.
