E uropean labelstock demand grew by 6.8 percent in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the same quarter last year, ac- cording to new market research from FINAT, the association for the self-adhesive labeling and narrow web converting industries.
The increase followed modest growth rates of 1.8 percent and 1.4 percent recorded in 2019 and 2018 respectively, although the second half of 2019 already indicated an upward trend with above 3 percent year-on-year increases. The current and future quarter results are and will be severely impacted by the Covid-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdowns in countries around Europe since March, as short term demand for critical supplies to the food, pharmaceutical and medical markets surged and retail chains started stockpiling in anticipa- tion of prolonged lockdown periods and consumer hoarding.

Labelstock Demand (Cont’d from Page 1) While demand in UK was hit by a significant decline in the months surrounding Brexit, Scandinavia showed a mixed picture, and demand growth in central Eu- rope was slowed down by below-average but still ro- bust growth in Germany. Southern European countries which were most severely hit by Covid-19 (with the exception of France) showed growth numbers in ex- cess of 5 percent. Year-on-year growth was strongest in the eastern Europe with leading markets showing annualized growth rates in excess of 10 percent. Although the Covid-19 lockdowns only started in March, it can be assumed that their impact already came into force in February as customers (both for critical and non-critical goods) started stockpiling. In view of these numbers, it should be no surprise that lead times for self-adhesive materials, especially for non-critical goods have increased substantially. Apart from the availability of raw materials label con- verters are facing the impact of lockdowns through the reduced availability of staff on the shop floor, adjust- ments necessary to comply with tightened operational safety and health measures, and cashflow issues related to unilateral extension of payment terms by customers. Tracking COVID-19 Finat has set up a special Covid-19 website and is hosting regular webinars to update members of the la- bel community on the latest developments and stimu- late the exchange of best practices.Apart from raw ma- terials issues and short-term peak supply tensions, of major concern is the impact of a prolonged economic crisis beyond the current government support packag- es provided in different countries for the coming three to six months. It is anticipated that once these packag- es expire, layoffs increase and credit ratings continue dropping, demand could face a severe downturn. To additionally keep its members informed concern- ing developments in the label industry during the Covid-19 crisis, FINAT has been organising a series of webinars through which members and representa- tives of the national label associations can exchange experiences and best practices. To develop discussion and interaction during the latest FINAT Covid-19 webinar on April 28 a poll was introduced with the following question “What are the 3 priorities for resuming operations in the coming 2-3 months”.The responses were: • Raw materials — 65 percent • Labor disruption — 60 percent • Financial issues — 55 percent • Logistics — 50 percent • Occupational health, safety measures — 40 percent • Other —5 percent

AWA Releases Report On Pressure Sensitive Labels With a 40 percent share of the total labeling market, pressure sensitive labels are still the leading label for- mat around the world, according to a new report from AWA Alexander Watson Associates entitled AWAreness Report: Global Pressure sensitive Label Market 2020 . Additionally, pressure sensitive labeling enjoyed 3.3 percent growth in 2019. Today, the Asian region represents the highest per- centage of the pressure sensitive label market, with a 38 percent share, and it is still growing. North Ameri- ca, Europe, and even South America also experienced growth in 2019. However, the fastest-growing, but cur- rently small, regional market is now Africa and Middle East, which saw 3.6 percent growth last year and is a new focus point for the labeling and packaging indus- try as a whole. Globally, the food and beverage end use segments represent the highest usage of pressure sensitive la- bels in primary labeling applications, with a 44 per- cent share of the total market. However, transport and logistics applications represent a 47 percent share of pressure sensitive usage today. A sign of the times, variable information printing is the key factor in sup- porting a safe, trustworthy e-commerce/internet sales supply chain. UPM Raflatac Introduces Recycled Paper Face Material Label to Label features up to 30 percent post-con- sumer waste (PCW) containing recycled label backing. The label liners are collected via the RafCycle by UPM Raflatac service and through other industry ini- tiatives. Next, they are de-siliconized and converted to raw PCW, and then UPM Raflatac’s raw materials sup- plier makes new paper label facestock from PCW con- taining recycled label fiber. Finally, UPM Raflatac turns this label facestock into the Label to Label product, reportedly creating a closed-loop solution.

Survey Sheds Light On Plastic Packaging The IK, a trade association representing the interests of manufacturers of plastic packaging and films, has released the results of its survey on the effects of the COVID-19 crisis. Across all segments, 37 percent of the companies stated that they had fewer orders compared to March. A quarter of all companies even reported declines of more than 20 percent. In contrast, a good half of the companies reported an increase in orders in April, al- though mostly in the range of between 10 percent and 20 percent. According to the survey, just under 80 percent of the companies are able to fulfil the orders they received, but around half of the respondents reported corona-re- lated restrictions, mainly in relation to reduced per- sonnel numbers. Here, the main differences between consumer and industrial packaging manufacturers be- come apparent: almost 40 percent of the companies reported a shortage of personnel, while almost 25 per- cent said they had to introduce short-time working. European Carton Excellence Awards Extends Deadline Pro Carton and the European Carton Makers Associa- tions have confirmed that the annual European Carton Excellence Awards’will not be impacted by the coro- navirus outbreak and that the deadline for entries has been extended to June 4, 2020. The “Carton of the Year” award will be of- fered to the overall champion, regardless of category or substrate. Additionally, the judges will choose a wider selec- tion of entrants that they also believe deserve recog- nition as either Platinum or Gold Award winners.

Labelstock Demand (Cont’d from Page 4)
How is the largest label market in Europe dealing with Covid-19? Klemens Ehrlitzer, Managing Director of the German label association VskE, addressed some of the key questions which were also raised during the Covid-19 webinar. Q : How does VskE expect the market to react and how will the country’s operations evolve in the com- ing months? Klemens :At the moment there is no foreseeable sign of returning to normal life as it was in the pre-Covid- days. In Germany, the restrictions imposed led to a sit- uation where the number of infections decreased. The health system was easily able to cope with the daily cases on a day to day basis. It was even possible to accept Covid patients from other countries into the intensive care units within German clinics. In light of this, the German government has now started to ease some of the restrictions. In addition to the stores and supermarkets that had remained open, now other retail outlets are being allowed to re- open. One criterion for reopening is the size of the stores, e.g. smaller than 800 square meter of sales area. Schools will start to replace the online lessons with face-to-face lessons for those classes that have final ex- aminations this year. The automotive industry began to reboot the production to some degree. Special challenges in Germany: government mea- sures are interpreted differently by the 16 states. This means that opening dates, criteria, which stores can open, etc. varies from one state to the next. Example: While DIY stores were closed in one state but open in a neighbouring state “shopping tourism traffic”was observed. This resulted in the drivers from neighbour- ing states being fined by police who were checking the roads for non essential journeys. The label industry has not been hit by the govern- mental restrictions up to now. According to several statements from different ministries, the packaging and label industry is considered to be part of the crit- ical infrastructure to assure security of supply with food, medical products and other essential goods. The German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs published an occupational health and safety standard. How the production from the label converters devel- oped in the past Covid-19 weeks depended on the mar- ket segment, e.g. industrial labels for automotive cus- tomers had to accept considerable reductions while the food or pharma sector showed a higher demand than usual. Converters which normally cover markets like events, restaurants, clothing are suffering severely.” With easing of the restrictions a discussion started

Campbell Commits To Sustainable Goals
Flexo Market News
Campbell Soup Company has announced four new sustainability goals, including a pledge to ensure that 100 percent of the packaging used by its brands is re- cyclable or compostable by 2030. According to Campbell, the aim of the four goals is to reduce packaging waste through investments in recy- clability, use of recycled content, and consumer educa- tion and infrastructure. To achieve its four new targets,Campbell claims it will: • Transition 100 percent of its packaging to recycla- ble or industrially compostable designs and materials by 2030. • Increase the use of post-consumer recycled con- tent and incorporate 25 percent post-consumer recy- cled content into polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles by 2030. • Drive increases in recycling rates through standard- ized on-pack labelling by including the How2Recycle label on 100 percent of packaging by 2022. • Expand access to recycling and advance the de- velopment of infrastructure to improve the collection and recycling of packaging by building and investing in partnerships with peers and industry groups. Campbell claimed that its V8 V-Fusion and V8 Blends multi-serve bottles switched from shrink sleeve labels to wrap labels in 2019, while snack bags were rede- signed for its Kettle brand, which resulted in a 43 per- cent reduction in plastic. The company says that it has already implemented How2Recycle instructions on several of its products, and will continue to roll the labels out until 2022. There have been more than 450 signa- tories who are all working collaboratively to support these objectives. MCC is, so far, reportedly the only label company that has signed the Global Commit- ment. The initiative is associated with the Ellen MacAr- thur Foundation, which focuses on creating momen- tum toward a plastics system that works.Applying the principles of the circular economy, The New Plastics Economy initiative brings together key stakeholders to rethink and redesign the future of plastics, starting with the packaging. By 2025, all MCC customers will have the ability to choose label products and technologies that will not hinder the final package to be recyclable, reusable or compostable. The company also committed to limit in- dustrial plastic waste ending up in the environment or in landfills by implementing waste reduction strate- gies.MCC will allocate the necessary resources toward further development of sustainable and circular prod- ucts and will continue to work collaboratively across the plastic value chain to ensure that plastic packaging is sorted and recycled in practice and at scale by devel- oping supportive label technologies.
